i love this blog because it’s been ages but today i studied ozymandias in poetry class and had to resist telling my teacher i spent several days making a ozymandias breaking bad web weaving once

nacho would roll up to the most tense, dangerous situations imaginable with the cuntiest facial expression ever performed and his arms crossed and he'd stand there visibly trying to explode people with his mind and roll his eyes hard enough to cast a breeze, and his bosses didn't bat an eye. meanwhile jesse couldnt step thru a doorway without getting his shit physically and mentally rocked into absolute oblivion

i don't think jesse's parents were openly abusive or openly neglectful. i think they probably read every parenting book and took him to school on time every day and told him they loved him - and here's the kicker - jesse got fucked up anyway.

because jesse's a classic case of ADHD. talks a lot but doesn't think before he speaks, makes small mistakes, struggles in school, has raging rejection sensitive dysphoria. and for kids like him, those types of "good" parents don't work. suddenly their grand plan for their kid's life is off the rails, and it can't be their fault (because they did everything right), so it must be his. so they push him harder, with that quiet disapproval. they expect better, they tell him. he needs to work harder. try more.

but jesse has ADHD, so working harder and trying more don't work. so the pressure gets to his head and he's frozen in place and everything's his fault, so he just gives up. blink and he's failing his classes. blink and he never went to college. blink and they're kicking him out of the house.

and i honestly think that's so important - that sometimes, a kid will grow up in a house that supposedly has everything he could need in the whole wide world, and he'll get fucked up anyway. because he's got adhd, so he's still trying to fit shoes he'll never be able to fill. the same way that walter chases impossible ideals of masculinity, jesse probably spent his childhood trying to be someone he fundamentally wasn't ever going to be able to be.

and that right there is what fucks people up. not just downright abuse or neglect; just the simple fact that no matter how many parenting books your parents read, or how many times they say 'i love you,' they still look at you and see everything you aren't.

teenage jesse tagging up random places around albuquerque with his stupid little signature is funny as fuck because obviously thats what he was doing back then but it kind of becomes bittersweet when u think about how thats probably all of jesse that remains in abq. most of the graffiti got covered over or cleaned but theres probably a pay phone or a sign somewhere in the city that still has a faded "jpi" long after he's escaped to freedom. every part of his past self has been either forcibly stripped away or reluctantly relinquished and his identity for the first twenty-five years of his life, the twenty-five years he spent in this city, is completely erased from physical existence except for a lone tag tucked under some corner like the last fossilized remnants of some ancient civilization.

and like reading back on the comments and analyses people made about jesse while breaking bad was airing/ending is so surreal because so many people just explicitly wished more harm on him or at the very least didnt want him to obtain any kind of freedom or salvation. its not even a "wow in hindsight he really deserved better 😔" thing, u dont need the implications in "el camino" or time to Reflect on The Show to watch breaking bad and understand that jesse was a victim and in no way deserved further harm. like, it's not subtext, it's just text. jesse was an imperfect victim and sometimes actively contributed to his own suffering and did shitty things that absolutely warranted consequences, but to deride him for trying to escape his abuse the "wrong way", for "becoming a rat", for "betraying" walt after "everything walt did for him"?? how can u say these things and wish more harm + less hope upon him without realizing that it's all textbook victim-blaming?? and like this isnt even a case of all those commenters being walt stans or inherently hateful and shitty: it's holding a grudge against an imperfect victim for not being a christ-like saint until the very end. skyler was an imperfect victim (woman, nagging wife), jesse was an imperfect victim (addict, ungrateful accomplice). jesse didnt always turn the other cheek and apparently that means he shouldn't have been allowed to speed away to his freedom in the finale
