A HUNTED MAN: A DETAILED LOOK AT MOAMMAR GADDAFI’S FINAL DAYS
To be a dictator is to gamble with father time. No tyrant nor dictator can retain control over a state when abuse is commonplace. Whether it ten years, twenty years, or in Colonel Gaddafi’s case a forty-one year rule of Libya. In a release by the Human Rights Watch, for the first time we get a detailed look into the Gaddafi’s final days.
On August 28th, 2011, Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi and two of his sons fled Tripoli, which was finally succumbing to months of rebel attacks. His first son, Khamis, was killed within a day of the rebel advancement into Tripoli in what is presumed to be from a NATO airstrike. At this point, another one of his son, Saif al-Islam, had escaped but shortly after was captured by rebel forces. Gaddafi fled to his hometown of Sirte, where unknown at the time, would be the location of his final days leading to his eventual death.
The story, detailed from the Human Rights Watch rests much on the account of loyalist fighters who were with Gaddafi in the final weeks leading up to his death. Though the accounts are impossible to verify, the HRW has come out with the single most complete account of a man known to the Western world as the “mad dog of the Middle East.”
The story starts with Gaddafi’s arrival into Sirte along with a personal driver, a small group of bodyguards and Mansour Dhao, a state security official. Gaddafi makes his way into a small apartment just blocks from the downtown area. Here he is met with two officials of his regime to discuss the ongoing civil war, which is gaining traction with the overtaking of Tripoli, Libya’s capital.
Rebels’, aware of Gaddafi’s whereabouts, shelled Sirte with increasing ferocity as rebel forces moved into the city. With the continual push from rebel forces, Gaddafi abandoned the small apartment and moves towards the western part of town. A man, who had stolen billions of dollars from his country, now fights for food, water, and housing.

VOTING FOR PRESIDENT IS POINTLESS
For as long as I can remember I have been fixated on American Politics. I grew up with dreams of sitting in the oval office calling the shots for the free world. I read every book, every article, watched every show that I thought would give me a better shot at this dream. Call it a long shot if you will, but every person needs something to strive for. I had back up plans of sitting in the senate, or congress, or just being involved in politics in any way, shape, or form. Yet in one defining moment, a moment that would define a life change so drastic that politics is now only referred to as a fleeting fascination of my youth, I lost every iota of desire to be involved in politics.
That moment was August 28th, 2008. An election that had divided a nation. And was my first true taste of the divisiveness, and partisanship of American politics. But it was not the election that made me lose faith, it was on this date, a day in my mind that will life on in infamy...
