Hey y'all, it's been awhile since I published any of my own work. Ghostwriting will sap that right out of you. So it would mean a whole bunch if you joined my Patreon FOR FREE and gave this new short story a read! Here's a link, and a sample ->
The woman had forgotten her name.
She added that loss to the notebook she kept hidden beneath the floorboards of the Tumbledown. Her blue pen scratched it out, in letters shaped by a steady hand.
My real name.
It sat above:
The sound of their voices.
The smell of rain. Real rain.
Here, the pen changed color to red. A year ago. She hadn’t found a pen that color in a long time.
My favorite book.
How her lips tasted.
It wasn’t just scarcity that created this amnesia. It was the containment. Something about the radioactive chemical barrier surrounding her entire world ate away at the mind. It was nothing like dementia. Things just ceased to exist. Sometimes the memories simply vanished before she could feel them slip away. The rest—she knew when the fog was closing in around them and wrote them down. She didn’t know why.
Why it mattered.
But it had mattered once. And so she would keep the cryptic diary until the memory of that was eaten too.
Her name now was simple. Something only those in the Tumbledown knew. It was the only way to keep outsiders from infiltrating them. Faces remained in the mushy folds of brain matter for only as long as they were before you. Their assignments. Those could be remembered. The tasks that kept everyone alive. Your value. Survival and everything adjacent to it were all that remained. That is how names were chosen.
She was The Scavenger.
Resources in the containment were few and only growing fewer with every passing day. Competition was fierce and deadly. She barely remembered the early days, when the villages had worked together to plant fields, storing and saving seeds, sharing skills and tools, gathering up the remaining livestock, and dividing resources.
That was the containment, too.
It didn’t just eat away at the memories.
It eroded something intrinsic, something primal.
It subverted their humanity, the basic instincts of cooperation that had allowed their bipedal ancestors to thrive.
All that was left was a feral need to outlast. Until when and for what, Scavenger didn’t know. All she knew was it wasn’t long until even the Tumbledown would turn in on itself. Gorging on the atrophying muscle of civilization. It had already happened to many of the others.

Decided I need a woodcut tattoo of this 1963 Beowulf Translation 👀
Tumblr media
[Image Description: cover of the 1963 translation of Beowulf by Burton Raffel. The background is beige, and the text black. In the foreground is a demonic, dragon-like creature done in pinks, oranges, and reds. Standing above it is a bearded man in chainmail is shoving a sword into it's gaping maw. The art is reminiscent of medieval woodcuts. End Image Description]

Me: (who writes for $) *crawling out of my AuDHD pile office that's also a nursery clutching six google docs, 3 empty mugs, and an unhinged Spotify playlist*

Other DMs: Craft meticulous campaigns and boss battles with incredible lore and world building.
Me: Ok, players, to escape this pocket dimension inside a briefcase you're going to have to play the 1970s gameshow classic "Card Sharks".

I’m so sorry but in the nicest way possible do yall actually read books or just read words??? Cause I’ve been seeing that trend of people not understanding how “snarled” and “eyes darkened” and “eyes softened” etc. was used in a book and like…
Genuinely, do yall just not have imagination?? Or not understand figurative language??? Also eyes do literally darken and soften have you not lived a life??? How do you read with no imagination? Is this how you get through so many books in one month - you simply don’t take the time the understand the words as they are read?

What Things Were Worth in the Middle Ages
What things were worth in the Middle Ages wasn’t just a matter of prices or wages. Medieval societies attached worth to objects not only for their utility but also for their symbolic and social significance. While data on prices and wages offer some insights into medieval economies, they provide only a partial view. To truly understand what things were worth, one must explore the deeper layers of meaning, symbolism, and status attached to objects in this period.
