i know this is nothing more than a non canon voice actor choice that has happened for multiple reasons i recognise and understand and it is nothing to even consider looking into. but the idea of Nero sounding just like Dante did when he was younger is driving me up the wall
Glad there is no animosity between Johnny and Reuben and it’s not about Reuben’s political and crazy conspiracy views that people thought which is great
But… There must be a reason why he is the VA and I’m glad Johnny is giving vague answers due to NDA. I hope in future panels he gave us an answer if he is free to do so
I’m thinking that the anime is cooking for a plot twist that we don’t know. It will be really funny if the real Dante is telling his past history to Nero or this is just Nero dreaming Dante’s past
We will see and looking forward to it for more answers. Will keep on the look out for this
I had another draft regarding if Vergil is antihero or anti-villain
The thing is due to how complex his character is and pretty much grey. He can interchange between the two
Anti-heroes are characters that do wrong things, but with the right reasons
Anti-villains are characters who do heroic things for the wrong reasons
I remember when Adi said that he sees Vergil like Thanos. A lot of people got mad at his opinion. Maybe he said that because, he sees both of them as Anti-villains, but Vergil is under the Noble Anti-villain and Thanos is Well-Intention Extremist Anti-villain.
While the devs are seeing especially, we are talking about Bingo Morihashi's writing. Vergil is an anti-villain in the outside, but an anti-hero in the inside. He neither sees himself as heroic like Dante or as villainous like Mundus. He flip-flops between the two.
Even as V, you question his morality just because his end goal was to redeem himself, while Urizen is straight up villain.
But people forget that, V has Vergil's memories and Urizen does not have it. Even the manga, Visions of V is focus on V only. Questioning his morality well, Vergil and sees the path of redemption.
Vergil is also a traumatic person. There is no one-sided here. He is a victim of Mundus, and who lost both his mother and Lady in Red, the love of his life, a woman that he cared deep within his heart. Because of this, he knows humanity is his weakness.
As of writing this post, Vergil's PoV is in the section when he was still 16 years old and summarizing what was said in Devil Moon
I have said before in my 2 part analysis of Dante's depression is that Dante knows what will happen if he killed Vergil.
Nero (I have still to write this), you may think he doesn't care regarding Vergil. But, Nero cares. He is literally Ichigo Kurosaki, his goal is to protect his loved ones. That is his goal, his motive on why he needs power in the first place that he lost and forgotten due to his revenge and reclaimed that goal in the end of DMC5. His whole arc is basically like the Fullbring Arc/Lost Shinigami Arc in BLEACH
I honestly wasn’t the biggest fan of it? (Sorry to ppl who like it I just wasn’t a fan) However, it introduces a really interesting concept: The idea of Dante traveling to a parallel universe where Mundus kidnapped him as a child and he became Nelo Angelo instead among many other things. Which implies originally that’s what happened to Vergil in Kamiya’s original vision ofc until DMC 3 existed. But god that’s such a fucked up concept.
It’s also crazy to think Vergil was originally just a child who got kidnapped and turned into an Angelo until he was turned into the character we know him as today. Of course, canon isn’t kind to him either way.
He really needs a hug.
Unlike the other novels, this one doesn’t seem to be canon, as the existence of a lot of future media retcons a bunch of things in it. But I’d love to see this parallel universe concept explored.
Imagine we get a new game and something like this is a plot point, and it really answers Vergil’s question of “What if our positions were switched on that day?”
This is an in-depth explanation btw, just a rewrote of a short analysis that I did before
Short answer: No
Long answer:
Back then during 3142 Timeline: Everyone believes he is dead
The current timeline which is, 31245 timeline.
This is where it just splits up into two both in-universe and reality/how the fandom thinks
a. People who believe that he is dead, even before the retcon
b. People who is now questioning how valid the last sentence of DMC1 Legend of Sparda
The novel author, Shin-ya Goikeda (DMC2 novel) wrote that Chen travelled all around the world, and can't find Sparda's grave.
This was supported by Bingo Morihashi who is the scenario writer since DMC3. By stating that, Dante's father left and didn't know it will be the last time they will see him. Didn't know if he is still alive nor dead (Deadly Fortune vol 2), and Mundus' minions can't find Sparda anywhere since he wanted revenge against the traitor (Before the Nightmare)
There is a misinformation that Vergil knew regards to Sparda just because of what he said in DMC5SE Vergil ending. Vergil doesn't know what happened to Sparda, its the same case to Dante. The twins are still kids at that time when Sparda left
What is a Legend? According to Britannica Dictionary, its "a story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proved to be true." while Oxford Languages stated that "a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated."
By learning the definition of what a legend is, we can tell already that people in the DMC universe believe that the Legend of Sparda is just a myth. This is also connects to how they see demons that they are just fiction/is not real. This is before DMC5
Another piece of evidence comes from Mission 10: The Last Promise between Baul (white) and Modeus (black), twin demon apprentices that Sparda taught.
It was stated by Nico in DMC5 Documents and what happened to Jessica in the DMC1 novel. People who hallucinates and believe in demons or the fact that they believe that the Legend of Sparda, or even knowing that a descendant of Sparda exist were sent to a mental hospital. is the only reason of why not all people believe in it. If people believe in it, they prefer to keep it to themselves.
And its why Dante and Nero prefer to keep it a secret, cuz why would the public and even media believe that demons do in fact exist. When they do believe that demons don't really exist. They are just myths, or fairytales. Same thing with the Legend of Sparda cuz its just a legend
From what have you read, people in the DMC universe before DMC5 believe that demons do exist or demon's don't exist. (Of course, its different when regards to DMC5, but we really don't know since there is no new DMC novel what happened after 5)
While, regards to Sparda.. There are people who believe in it that he is missing or alive, but there are also people who don't believe in it because he is dead and/or Sparda is not real because he is a just legendary heroic figure or myth
It's interesting when it comes to the majority of the DMC fandom when it comes to Sparda. Since there are some people will think, you are crazy for thinking and believing that he is missing. Just because, it is stated in the DMC1 Legend of Sparda.
The whole point is that... Unless stated that Sparda is really died with evidence supporting it. What was said in DMC1 that "continued to preserve harmony, until his death", this statement cannot be proved true or real unless stated otherwise.
Even if he is missing, the statement left us open-ended with tons of questions
I've seen time and time again regarding DMC's era. Let's talk about it
This is what Hideaki Itsuno said in 3142 Artbook:
Next, is HIroyuki Kobayashi's interview in GameDeveloper Dec 12, 2007
What does it mean exactly?
From DMC1 to 4, it is set where Internet and cellphones doesn't really exist. The technology is set during 1980s. Where analog tech is widely popular
Until... DMC5
Nero is referencing the doge meme that was created and popular in 2013. If you want to be specific, is the early 2010s Internet meaning Nero knows memes of that era.
Another evidence that the internet exist is during Mission 7: United Front where using a photomode you can see a website for centralavenueway (it's a fake website, it doesn't exist)
The era in this timeline sets right in the middle where analog is still popular and high tech is too far to reach. A mix of 1980s and early 2010s. Majority of high technology coincides with researching regarding demons like the Ouroboros in DMC2 and Agnus who worked in Ouroboros as explained in Before the Nightmare
Crow, also analyze this regarding her post and its something to do with communication tech and why people still prefer analog tech. It's also the reason why cellphones don't exist in the DMC universe.
What about Cameras? Digital cameras don't exist, but the popular camera are the film cameras. These are cameras using film reels like the Canon AE-1. It is similar to what we have seen in the opening cutscene. If you hear it, the snap of the Film Camera is not snappier than Digital Cameras. It is still crunchy like a crumple paper
As you have notice, touchscreens don't exist in this era since it is considered High Tech and the reason why they still use film cameras instead of Digital Cameras.
The only high tech is the Flatscreen HD TVs, Digital Billboards and flat screen desktop computers is still in-line to what Kobayashi said regarding mix of analog and high tech
This is an thorough explanation. I did this before titled "Devil May Cry Ages" is short tbh. We have to discuss first the DMC5 Calendar. This was explained by Amanda or @flopity-flips before. Shout out to them
Here is the link for what she did
The picture is taken from the DMC5 Artbook. As you can see, the days of the week is not English, but German. While, the month is in English. Luckily, for us.. since Amanda did it first. She stated that DMC5 happened in May of 2016.
You can see that both the in-game calendar and English calendar have May 1 and May 8 in Sonntag/Sunday
We can conclude that Visions of V and DMC5 happened in 2016
With that said.. let's go in reverse order
Before the Nightmare novel is split up into two parts, if you have read the fan translation. First half (Chapter 1 to Chapter 7: interlude) happens 5 years after DMC4, while the second half (Chapter 8 to Epilogue) happened a year after
This means that the novel's year setting is both in 2015 and 2016, while DMC4/Deadly Fortune novel happened in 2010
DMC2 novel and DMC2 happened in the same year after 2007 DMC Anime happened. It happened 10 years/decades ago from Before the Nightmare. The DMC2 novel has an epilogue chapter when Dante was invited to go to the museum
DMC Anime and CD Drama, DMC2 novel, and DMC2 happened in 2006
What about DMC1? Happened 20 years after the First Red Grave. Means Dante is already 28 by this time.
DMC3 is like Before the Nightmare. I said this.. It's because of the difference on how Dante said it in Mission 1 and Mission 7. Note that Vergil is older than Dante by several hours according to Bingo Morihashi's 3142 artbook interview, meaning Dante was only 18 and by Mission 7 he is 19. While Vergil, is 19 at the start of the game. Using the word "nearly" means its very close to one year
DMC3 manga happened after DMC1 novel as both events happened 10 years after First Red Grave incident, when Dante and Vergil are 18 years old
Also in DMC1 novel that Dante drifted two years ago meaning he drifted into the unnamed DMC1 town when he was 16
Vergil, on the other hand mentioned by Sanctus that Nero was 16 or 17 and he met Vergil 17 years ago, meaning that Vergil is the same age as DMC4 Nero. We have to follow what the original Japanese Deadly Fortune novel said
So.. believing what Itsuno said that "Nero is the same age as the twins in DMC3" before when it was still 3142 Timeline is already retconned by the time they retconned the timeline for DMC5. If they didn't retconned we will stick to what Itsuno said, since the manga, novels, and anime are not canon in 3142 Timeline.
Another reminder that people ignoring its that Sanctus slowly poisoning Pope Solemnis for 2 years, and he met Vergil when he was already a pope
Remember what Morrison told to Dante what happened in Morris Island in Episode 8: Once Upon A Time in DMC Anime. It happened 20 years ago, means that Dante is 20 years younger than his age in DMC Anime
It's a popular idea that Dante and Vergil are only 8 years old. Where did the 8 years old comes from? I have no idea tbh if I searched far and wide in the internet
Now, we have now the years but we don't have the exact year from DMC1 and below. We have to take into account that she said that Dante and Vergil were born in 1975. Its easy if we will just write it in descending order or if you want to challenge yourself calculate it
First Red Grave Incident happened 1983
Morris Island Incident - 1986
Vergil visiting Fortuna and Dante drifted in unnamed town - 1991
Sanctus communicating with Vergil - 1992
DMC1 novel, and DMC3 manga - 1993
DMC3 - 1994
and lastly Devil May Cry 1 happened in 2003
Note: During DMC3, Lady is a highschooler to cater to the Japanese audience, and she is slightly younger than the twins
To get first: DMC3, you have to know Nero's age
He was 16 in DMC4 then add 6 to make 22 that is his canonical age in DMC5. Take 2016 and subtract it to 22 to get the year for DMC3 and also, Nero's birth
Morris Island: Take DMC Anime year and subtract it to 20
First Red Grave: Subtract 1993 since DMC1 novel, and DMC3 manga to 10
From there.. You can add 20 in 1983 to get DMC1 year
To get what year of birth for the twins just subtract it to 8 to get 1975
i don't think we talk enough about how fucked up the dmc anime was contextually. you're setting this after dmc 1? after Dante is convinced he killed his brother? and you're making EVERY SECOND CASE SIBLING RELATED???? and you give us an episode with two brothers that were students of Sparda?? and you make Dante have to yell at that one guy in the racing episode to not follow the same road his brother did? after Dante reached for Vergil to save him from Hell? jail. jail for one thousand years
I don't know about you guys, but I've always wondered what in the actual hell (no pun intended) are written or are these arcane-like "portals" that shows up when Dante SDTriggers, in the Judgement move or when he and Nero does some double jumping moves:
@alaxamost said it might be Abyssal, a known demonic language but what really bites me is that we have no canonical info about these since, like, ever. These "portals" may be the Underworld insignia, I don't know I- I just wanted actual canonical lore about this and what it is, in fact, written. What kind of language it is, if demons speak it (probably yes)... I'm a little curious bug and want you guys to be curious as well.
I need someone to do a video essay-length deep dive into how 75% of the BG3 fandom fell so hard for Astarion's manipulative seductor act that they believe that's his actual personality. This man has to practice his lines and still fumbles them constantly. He flat-out says it's all a front because he believes his sex appeal is the only reason anyone would keep him around, which is tragic. When he drops the act, he becomes this kind of silly man rediscovering what it means to be himself, and what it means to both love and be loved. He says "I'm all pointy ears, love." while turning his head to show off those pointy ears. Let him be silly, let him be awkward! It's so much more authentic then him being a walking innuendo.
He has a mid charisma stat with a bonus for deception and rolled a nat 20 on all y'all.
This is a continuation of Part 2.1 if you never read it. Just read that first, before reading Part 2.2. This became long all of a sudden. Now I articulate my thoughts
DMC4 especially, Deadly Fortune novel.. Is where Dante is haunted by his guilt memories after learning that Nero is his nephew.
First, him noticing Nero's eyes is similar to Vergil
Second, him feeling the cry of the soul is similar to Vergil, and it reference to the Mission 20 title of DMC3
Dante has doubts, then confirmed when he had a second fight to Nero
Then by Volume 2 of the novel, he was giving advice
That last sentence is a reference to what the Trinity of Fates explained regarding the final scene in DMC3
Nero: “You forgot this.”
Dante: “Keep it.”
Nero: “What…? I thought this meant a lot to you…?”
Dante: “That's the only kind of gift worth giving. I want to entrust it
to you, and so I am. What you do from here is your call"
A lot of people will said that Dante became happier after he met Nero and his depression is instantly gone, which is not the case. Depression can't be cured easily, there are cases of people that takes years to overcome and to recover. Depression for every person has various experiences is not instantly. it takes a year, or years to recover from it. There are real life stories of people having depression, overcome and recovered.
This is speaking from a personal experience and I don't want to say it here. All you have to know is I'm ok, and I don't hear voices in my head anymore. I should know the reason why, but I don't know.
Anyways.. yeah.. For people like Dante is not really that easy tbh. There is a reason why he and Nero had no communication at all since the incident and it shows that he is really haunted by the fact that he killed his twin brother and Nero's father.
DMC5 is where we see a lot of references, but this is where it connects to DMC3 manga, DMC3, DMC1, and DMC4
First, when V said that Vergil is coming back. This is a slapped on the face to Dante. You can see his thoughts already. He still can't believe it, cuz he killed his brother 13 years ago. He saw him explode
These 2 pages right here is more of a reference in DMC3 manga when the Mad Hatter told Dante.. "To think that the brother you thought was d-dead. Is Alive... Aren't you Happy?"
He still had doubts about it, until he met Urizen.
From here... we are skipping some missions and chapters. Boy, this is long. I have to connect these games like playing a jigsaw puzzle
Him saying "Leave Nero out of this.".. Says a lot to Dante is not just him wanting to protect Nero, but also to say that "This is between Me and Vergil"
" Trust me Nero... this one's gonna be a little too much for ya.
He knew this from his experience all the way back since DMC3 and 1.
Similar to what happened in DMC3 manga that Vergil just appeared in front of Dante, you can notice that Dante has a different expression here. You can see how angry he was and it is shown during the cutscenes in DMC5 that he is aggressive and Vergil just defending himself
In Mission 18, let's analyze this.. He is already saying to Nero that he should go home already because, he experience this before. This is between the rivalry of Dante and Vergil and should not include Nero.
This is where he reiterates, but not saying directly what he said during the Diverging Point- Dante mission. It's all coming back and it haunted and blamed Dante for years.
it was revealed to Nero from Dante that Vergil is his father. This was shown when he and Nero fought for the second time back in DMC4
He advices Nero to not continue or more on... "Nero, I experience this before and I don't want you to experience this"
This is the same when regards to Lady. Both Dante and Lady knows this from their experiences (DMC3 and DMC1). Wishing and hoping that Nero will never experience it.
Just from this... You see how the story connects and referencing past medias...
It was revealed in Visions of V that Vergil just wants to defeat Dante, not kill as what other fans and Nero see but defeat him. Whichever version of English fan translation. Is still the same btw
To Vergil, he just want to have fun like when, they were still kids.
There is a difference when it comes to defeating your opponent either your opponent is still alive and breathing, while the other is killing them
If you were in let's say 2019-2020 people will say.. "Vergil still wants to kill Dante, and Nero doesn't understand that the twins like to play roughhouse as children do"
When fans in Twitter during the live tweeting during the release of this chapter. They realize Dante's anger (just scroll up). He is clenching his teeth due to anger that his brother is alive again, and realizing Dante wants to kill Vergil.
Onto Mission 19...
It all comes back to the cycle when you notice it and it's the reason why I did this. Is not just the rivalry between Dante and Vergil that they have different ideologies, but also Dante was force to kill his brother either physically/mentally/or both, believing in it and then blaming himself. There is a pattern.
Since DMC3 and now DMC5. Dante wants to stop Vergil and his obsession for power. But in order to stop him, he has to kill Vergil whether he likes it or not. He knew it since the very start that this fight is between him and Vergil. He reference multiple times that he experience it before.
It all comes back to DMC3 and even the arena itself in DMC5 Mission 19 and 20 is similar to DMC3 Mission 20
"What if Dante killed Vergil and Nero was late?"
I'm pretty sure Dante will blame himself again, and Nero will blame Dante and we will have maybe a Nero vs Dante fight since Nero is out for revenge due to his anger and learning why he and Dante have no communication for the last what 6 years. The cycle continues...
"What if Nero killed Vergil?"
Nero will be distraught, and blamed himself. Since Nero lost Kyrie and Credo's parents when he was still a kid and Credo during his teens. Dante and Lady will see themselves to Nero.
To snap Dante in this cycle, Nero has to stop them from fighting and this is why DMC5 is ending the Sons of Sparda arc. What the devs mean is the ending of the rivalry and the cycle. It doesn't mean this is the end for Dante and Vergil.
We see now that Dante is happy again, and he enjoys that Vergil is here. They are being twins again. This is were it ends his depression. He overcome and recovered. All thanks to Nero
I hope you like it and understand how everything connects by this point and clear up some misinformation here and there. If you have questions, I'm pretty sure the "Ask Me" is working as intended or if you know me from discord just notify me
