Behold! My first fanbinding project, from last winter. In which I raided my long-time RL and fandom friend @zulufic‘s AO3 for the assorted snippets of crackfic that she’s written over the years, and smushed it into a short little pamphlet bind! We’ve got ridiculous in-jokes, moments in fandom history, and a few things that were written on our living room couch. The pictures above are from the copy I made for myself over the summer, and the ones below the cut are the original Christmas present. In between, I got a printer that can handle cardstock for the cover, and some slightly better paper, but they’re pretty similar overall.
I’m kind of hooked on these pamphlets for smaller projects. They’re a good instant-gratification project, since there’s not much in the way of construction and no waiting for glue or paste to dry.

One-volume binding of Shimeji Simulation, one of my favorite mangas of all time. Folio size, Polar Duo, metallic silver HTV + case (with a little hole so you can see the girls being tender together 💙)
I made this one for a friend who mentioned that he'd be interested in reading the manga, but preferred to read manga in physical form. There's no licensed English translation OR print run of this, so I decided to make my own - I downloaded the Orchesc/a/ns translation/scan on MangaDex, compiled it all into a single volume, and reversed the PDF page order before imposing it into signature-form, so it can be read right-to-left, as intended! The edge art is hand-drawn by me, meant to mimic those geometric doodles that show up throughout the story. Hand-sewn headbands, to pull it together! And a little mushroom + fish charm bookmark, because OBVIOUSLY!
Fun fact: this is the first book I've ever bound that's been too chunky to fit in my home guillotine. It was nearly too big for my bookpress, too - but only nearly.

Strap in Folks: #firstbind.
My first bind was that of Solus by FettsOnTop(GTFF)
There was so so many things I've messed up with this.
From the covers bending. The spine board too wide. The cloth not being fully glued down. The thread not staying glued. To no mull and shifting signatures.
BUT and here's the big one for me- IT WAS A BOOK!
Just like how Tolkien mentioned that Bilbo couldn't begin his adventure without stepping out his door, I couldn't call myself a binder WITHOUT doing these mistakes and creating my first book. It's not fancy. But it is MY FIRST BOOK

Alone At Christmas? (MDZS)
Well. This is certainly a thing I just did.
Tumblr media
Alone At Christmas? by @captain-apostrophe is a modern AU where A-Qing hires Xue Yang to freak out her family, but then it turns out her dads are super hot...
Fast forward a few months and I got the brilliant(?) idea to do a decorative stab binding, which is (originally) a traditional Asian bookbinding technique. There are many beautiful variations on it, so I figured, as I do, why not make it dicks? Why not make it three dicks? And what better story to do it with?
Tumblr media
(yes, technically there are six dicks, but there are two stories so it's really three dicks per fic)
In combination with this ridiculous design, I decided to embrace both the Christmas theme and Xue Yang's trashiness and use Duo Pepperoni for the bookcloth, and some very, very interesting marbled endpapers we've nicknamed salami sandwich.
Tumblr media
The typeset was lovingly made for me by @three--rings in the 2023 typesetting exchange. She preserved the ridiculousness as well as all of the author's hilarious Santa photos (which, WOW, that is a whole thing!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm very happy to have this in my possession! Thank you @three--rings for the typeset, and thank you @captain-apostrophe for making me laugh for a good couple weeks after reading this. :D

Behold, my first ever bookbinding! The fic is and as he fell (you walked away), by the amazing and wonderful @tea-with-veth
Tumblr media
This project was done at the start of June 2022, and was made to be a gift for Tea, since she was visiting me and I wanted to do something cool for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since it was my first project, and because I only did it in a week, I had to make up a bunch of stuff. For example, I ended up just using a family members printer. Which, while much cheaper, also meant I only had pure white paper. Still very proud of how it turned out though!
You can read the original work here:

Golden Key tiny book charm, Feb 2024.
All my other tiny book charms except my first one were intended as gifts, and I decided it was about time to make one with words for myself. It includes some of my favorite odds and ends, including some poems, short stories, excerpts from novels. I nicknamed the project The Golden Key after the first story I picked, a fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm collection.

In a similar vein to the person who said about being intimidated by other works.. How do you handle seeing someone has bound a fanfic you want to bind but feel you'll never be good enough because theirs looks so good?!
I feel like this meme pretty much sums it up:
Tumblr media
But also: if you love something enough, that will shine through in your work. Also if you stick with the hobby long enough, you can always remake it!

I would love it if y'all shared like. Someone's beginner work. Someone's first binding. So much of the stuff you share is gorgeous and beautiful and SO intimidating 😭 love y'all, love this blog 💚
Hello!
Thanks for the ask - we share works that members of either the Renegade Bookbinding Guild or the Renegade Bindery Discord server have tagged us in either on here or in Discord. There are people's first binds in there, you just have to go looking through the posts.
I will start tagging first binds with "first bind" if that would help with inspiration <3

My first concertina! A series of 14 feminist poems by @agest about the way women become myths (where an asexual girl is a unicorn in the same way the moon is a silver mirror, where being a people pleaser is not unlike being a demon and howling at the moon is quite popular with those who have it really rough when menstruating).
This was the last book of my Binderary, sent to the author with lots of love.

Fanbinding: Dirt and Ashes, or: The One-and-a-Half Body Problem by @tozettastone
Tumblr media
In which Sakura carries half of Hidan across two countries, leaving a trail of blood, bodies, and other people's legs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made this book for @aetherseer as part of an exchange we did, and I had such a great time making it. I saw this fic on their list and remembered reading it ages ago and was like I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT! and here it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover is Colibri bookcloth, handpainted with acrylic (all of the lettering is freehand- easy when the font you choose is irregular). @pleasantboatpress suggested including a quote on the spine since the title wasn't working there, so I got to add the absolutely banger quote from this fic "Your pain is sacred. Your suffering is beautiful."
For the edges, I used fluid graphite and polished and waxed them. On the endbands I used my Japanese silk thread for the first time (its a dream tbh).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the typeset, I leaned in hard on the blood sacrifice aesthetic, creating the Jashinist symbol for the front page (and also the cover) and using a font aptly called "Bloody Scratch." You can't see them here but for paragraph breaks there are little scythe.
@tozettastone, if you would like a copy I would be happy to make you one!! (I think my ask to you got eaten, feel free to dm).

Chainsaw Man Vol. 02 by Fujimoto Tatsuki
Oh gosh, this rebind has been sitting in my bookshelf finished since December last year - it just took me foreeeeeveeeer to finish the dust jacket illustration.
About the rebind: ✦ featuring Power on both the hardcover and dust jacket as the original cover also features Power ✦ dust jacket illustration is a Midsommar parody - a nod towards Fujimoto's love for the cinema ✦ duo bookcloth and htv vinyl for the hardcover
Volume 01 and volume 09 (collab with @bound2bb) have already been done, please check out my profile to see them :) Gonna be tackling volume 10 next (ft. Makima)

Once upon a time, as a wee child, I dreamed of writing a book and getting it published, of seeing it on shelves and hearing of people's reactions and excitement for what I wrote.
One fanfiction in particular is near and dear to my heart, so when I got it into my head to bind one of my own fics, there was really only one clear choice: Green Sarabhas.
Tumblr media
The first big decision was whether I'd do the series in four volumes or in one. Because I was making two copies, I opted for one volume because I really didn't want to make 8. 😅 The typesetting was a pain in the neck and the table of contents is four pages long, but we survived.
Tumblr media
Shout out to @purplephloxpress for hosting me for a weekend and spending about twelve hours at their dining room table with me, lending me tools I didn't have and helping me troubleshoot such a large undertaking. 🥰 I still need to get one of these punching tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first bind where I used book cloth, and it was a dream. I don't know if you can tell in the picture, but the book is sewn with four different colors of thread, one for each section of the fic. I contemplated doing four different colors in the end band too, but that was a step too far for me for this one. 😅
Tumblr media
squiiiiiiiiiiish
Tumblr media
I bought my own foil quill after playing with phlox's, so I did Claude, Sylvain, and Felix's Crests on the cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, here's the part I'm arguably most proud of and that made me cry for many different reasons: the dust jacket. I designed it in Canva, complete with end flap summaries and comments from the fics on the back, and printed it on poster board. I had to set my printer and computer to print a custom size paper and print on the non-glossy side of the poster board, but after much trial and error we got there. And when I say I cried, I am not kidding.
This fic was a labor of love, this bind is a piece of my soul, and I gave half of it to @astaraxion because we became friends due to this fic, so be sure to take care of it. 😉 I look forward to losing it together over the revisions and art that I did!

back in 2022 I made a sewn board binding of an Uprooted typeset I received through the annual @renegadeguild exchange in 2021, typset by Æthereal Press. In 2023 I received another Uprooted typeset through the exchange, this time typeset by Wild Woofs Press, so I decided to make it match the first one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
look how pretty of a pair they make!
Change Bitter Gall and Blighted Leaves by Colourofsaying (Agnieszka/Kasia)
A5 sized, sewn board binding
ends: 100gsm eco-craft oatmeal
spine: linen/viscose natural cloth backed with paper
cover: 4/0 Pepin (2017 Art Nouveau) of dubious weight over 160gsm Canaletto 20% cotton & acid free bookpaper and 1mm board
the breakaway spine came out much better this time (I have done a lot of breakaway spines at this point! practise may not make perfect but it does correlate with improvement). I did have to re-sew the textblock because I forgot to sew on the boards, but luckily I realised this before I glued the spine, so it was no big deal to cut the thread off and sew the block again.

I made a book of my own fanfic! Because I can, cause no one can stop me... (cause it makes up for things I lost)(sorry, had a W/IFS moment there, I'll stop now).... ANYWAY.
BEHOLD.
Like the fic itself, this was an exercise in just DO IT and don't overthink. If a problem persisted for more than five minutes I simply got rid of it (that's why there's no page numbers, they kept getting cut off). I didn't look up how to make mini books. I did the illustrations with the first gel pen that I found on scrap paper and scanned them in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The board is a cut up frozen sausage box, the cover paper is lokta (I think) that I got in November. The endpapers are basic black printer paper.
I love it so much.

Fic binding: In Which Merlin Reveals His Magic, Arthur Embarks On A Quest, And Uther Absolutely Does Not Admit He Was Wrong About Anything, Ever, by @alex51324
Over a year after typesetting and sewing it: finally done!! This was the first time I tried to deboss-- I used two thin pieces of board for the cover, used a cricut to cut the dragon shape out of one of them, and then glued them together. Turns out jabbing at leather with a pointy stick is kind of relaxing. (Also, for a first attempt, I should probably have chosen something with fewer tiny points.)
