Wangxian A/B/O Bingo by @youhideastar
This was a bind for my @bishopmyrielfundraiser auction item. It's a gorgeous series of every dynamic pairing for the ship, and delves into things I've never seen A/B/O fic touch on.
My first inset on a cover, and I'm obsessed. It looks so fancy and clean. The Untamed has really rich visuals to draw from, I had a lot of fun coming up with the design of this book and figuring out how to execute it.
Some details
All the decorative paper is chiyogami from Mulberry Papers
Bookcloth is silk moire from Hollanders and was inspired by Wei Wuxian's costume.
Each fic has a title page, decorated with a different public-domain painting by a Chinese artist held at the Met.
The title page, and matching spine title, was my time using a foiling tool on my Silhouette machine, and I love the finish it gives.
Thanks to Deastar for bidding on my auction item!

Hi!! I'm just recently getting into book binding but it's a little overwhelming, is discord the main place to connect with the community or can I do so over a different platform?
The Renegade Bindery Discord is absolutely the place to connect with others and work out the details as you learn! That's why I created it in the first place.

Bound: Fucking Feelings — an anthology of works by @its-the-allure
Typeset by: @sits-bound (stay tuned for typeset details from sits)
Bound by: me, @phoenixortheflame
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What can I say about this bind except it was made for a beautiful human for whom I owe a lot to.
I met @its-the-allure on Reddit of all places. One post led to another and she ended up beta-reading my WIP. This is notable not only because I was new to Drarry and didn't have any fandom friends, but also because I'd never written fiction before in my life. Like truly, not a word of it.
If you've had the pleasure of Allure reading your work, you know she is a generous and delightful beta, and her enthusiasm gave me the confidence to start posting my work.
Tumblr media
Not long after I started writing, Allure did too, and I had the immense privilege of beta-reading for her, too. In less than a year she published tens of thousands of words, including the 90s chatroom epistolary Come As You Are, which I see rec'd literally ALL THE TIME (seriously, it's amazing and if you haven't already read it, you definitely should).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few months into binding I told Allure I'd bind her an anthology of her works for her birthday. Well, that day came and went a couple months ago, but — in my defense! — I was making four copies of 22 Cards, OUR FAVOURITE FUCKING SERIES, so I know she forgives me.
Tumblr media
The anthology is called Fucking Feelings because this is the tagline we came up for Allure's work. There are feelings — and there's fucking.
The dust jacket is inspired by Melanie Martinez's album cover for Cry Baby. And the back table of contents is supposed to imitate a chatroom, with each work represented by a DM from the person whose POV the story is from. (If you look closely you'll even see a forwarded message, because that one is actually a Pansmione fic).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout the cover design and also the typeset (all credit to @sits-bound for that part of it) are fun little nods to everyone's favourite messaging app, Discord.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As always, Allure gets her own bio and a Praise For section with comments from some of her favourite people (shout out @faiell, @citrusses, @pocket-lin, @slyssnakes, and of course peu).
Happy birthday, Allure — I hope you love it, babe!
Materials and bind details
Book cloth is Verona in Amped Indigo
HTV is Cricut brand Everyday Iron-On in Blush
Endbands are Trebizond is a 3-ply silk filament thread using DAS's Two Colour Front Bead Headband tutorial here
Marbled paper from The Paper Place
Dust jacket is printed on 48-lb glossy photo paper (13" x 19") and covered with soft-touch laminate
HTV and dust jacket designs all done in Canva

First ever heat by @yayasvalveplay aka yayadrawsthingz
“So do I make myself clear. Under no circumstances are you or your companions allowed to go near the grounder.” He watched as the three looked at each other, most likely for comfort, before D-16 growled out. “Fine.” Before stalking away, no one stopped him this time as he walked out of the entrance. Or In the wake of everyone getting their T-cogs, Orion gets hit with years worth of missed Heat cycles, and now all have to deal with Starscream and the high guards, while also not getting caught by Airachnid.
Fandom: Transformers One
Relationships: Megatron/Optimus Prime, D-16/Orion Pax
Rating: Explicit
First pamphlet bind in... like, forever! Done because I really enjoy yaya's valveplug blog and thought it'd be fun to bind one of her fics! I'm pretty sure this was actually one of, if not the, first Transformers One fics I read. Beware if you visit her blog though! It's incredibly active and there's like 8 million posts made a day to get lost in!
Putting the making of and a censored pic of the title page under the read more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A person in the bookbinding discord made these really cute pamphlet binds so I wanted to hop in on the bandwagon too! I made the cover by editing this vector image from freepik and then put some clear holographic sticker paper on top to add some durability and shimmer. Not sure how well it shows, but I did a chain link stitch for the sewing.
I kept the typesetting pretty simple because I already knew I was gonna spend an embarrassingly long amount of time trying to draw the title page. Body and chapter title text is in Merriweather while the chapter number is in Nosifer. The cover uses Nosifer and Harvest.
And now the cover image with Safe For Work Orion Pax pulling his weight. (it's more highly suggestive than anything, but the full cover page will be one my bluesky if you actually want to see it.)
Tumblr media
The title page was printed on presentation matte paper and then joined onto the rest of the text block so the colors would show true, unlike how it would if I printed it on the cream colored paper I did the rest of the booklet in.

Another second chance custom bind for @bellisima-writes who wanted either Time Marches Forward or The Last Angel. Well, I said I’d do The Last Angel, but I lied. I did both and then thought that’s half the series—now I need to finish it. So I hope you like the entire series Bellisima!
Tumblr media
For Time I wanted green and blue for the focus on Earth 🌍 For Angel, I wanted something suggestive of cracked ice, because that’s what I was feeling as I read it, something brittle and full of cracks covering something colossal. And I had these lovely iridescent covers. For Between These Shelves, I did a pamphlet bind and I had to use the bookcase papers because they were perfect. It needed something different to iridescent, though. I found this wonderful picture and printed it on cardstock. And then Can I Hear a “Wepa”? needed bright and cheerful so I went back to the iridescent. Hourglasses as a series marker because time was a prominent theme. 1 of 2

to lie down with dogs by @motorghost
Hanzo and Cole are on a top-secret reconnaissance mission in the industrialized wasteland of post-Crisis North Dakota, hunkered down in a factory ill-fit for human occupation. Cole seems fine with the situation, but Hanzo's doubts extend far beyond their little room.
Now, as we all know, the number of hours I have logged in Overwatch is between me, beloved indie game developer Blizzard, and God. That said, after a certain number of hours logged in a game, you become somewhat obligated to at least sample the AO3 archive, and believe me when I say that I have far surpassed that number. to lie down with dogs was one of the first fics I read, and it more or less set the standard for Hanzo characterization for me. The writing is incredibly snappy and voice-y, and it's filled with descriptions that still to this day will randomly pop into my head when I think about the characters.
About the Bind
Typeset designed in Affinity Publisher. Titles set in Ruas, main text set in Charis SIL.
Scene dividers (which match the decoration on the back cover) are vectors from The Noun Project designed by Tatyana (wheat) and Uswa KDT (feather).
Flat back legal quarto, printed on 24/60 lb warm white paper with lacquered chiyogami endpapers (and to answer the question that gets asked like once a month in Renegade: yes, the coating causes a very faint stickiness that in no way affects the structure of the book or damages the papers).
Covers designed in Affinity Designer and applied using custom vinyl stencils and acrylic paint.
Samples from the typeset under the cut.

My most ambitious bookbinding project to date, a gift for author Christopher Buehlman for his incredible book Between Two Fires.
More info and process below the cut!
Since the book is set during the 14th century, I really wanted to do a typeset that included semi-contemporary art as accents. Before even printing the book there was a lot of work to do in the typeset process, including researching the artwork for chapter pages and dropcaps, as well as the title page image, all taken from woodcuts from the 15th-16th century (most of them are from Hans Holbein the Younger). It's not quite the same time period as the story, but I liked the more austere look of old woodcuts to illuminated art from the 1300s.
After typesetting and formatting, it was time to print, fold, and sew!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then trimming the sawtooth edges with a chisel...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and gilding the edges, weaving faux double-core endbands, and painting a hidden fore-edge image that reveals itself only when the book is flexed. These were all Firsts for me, and while they are far from perfectly executed, I'm obsessed. Every book is getting gilded edges and fore-edge paintings now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really wanted this book to have a leather cover, both because I've been eager to try my first true leather case, and because it felt so fitting for the rough, Medieval vibes of the book itself. Unfortunately, I got influenced by my local leather supplier, who convinced me that dying my own leather was the way to go...
...and she was right 🙈 I love how much control over the color and texture of the finished leather I have this way, and I will definitely be using up this veg-tanned hide that I purchased for future projects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The symbol on the front (matched on the back) is my own design, and meant to evoke a comet. The detail of the protagonist Thomás witnessing a comet in the sky, and thus standing between the fires of the heavens and earth, was one I wanted to emphasize for the title.
I'm so thoroughly proud of the finished project, hiccups and all, and I'm so eager to make more leatherbound books now. Thank you so much to Christopher Buehlman for his blessing in creating this bind, which is now safely within his possession!

Fanbinding: Hide of a Life War by etharei
Tumblr media
Bind #24
Hide of a Life War by @etharei
Date Completed: 4/27/2025
Size: Quarto.  26,105 words
Copies: 1
Another classic fic, this time for Teen Wolf.  Stiles & his father are taken hostage while on a bus trip.  The Sheriff is rather non-plussed by his son’s “just another Tuesday” reaction to danger, and Stiles is distracted trying to figure out how to get word out to the rest of the pack.  Quite amusing in spite of all the peril.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My typesets are fairly plain so one-shots, even long one-shots, come together relatively quickly without chapter headers to worry about.  The most time consuming part is correcting all the quotation marks and apostrophes to the curly versions.  Choosing a fun font is usually as fancy as I get (WolfredNelson in this case).
Still had a lot of fun for as simple as the bind is.  The cover had to be red, given Stiles’ moniker, but the yellow spine added some excitement.  And there are some really subtle flowers in the cover paper for a little added bonus.

I've been having a lot of fun with bookbinding, and I decided to make the Hope Is A Skill poem into a couple of pamphlets!
Tumblr media
I ended up replacing a few of the images that I wasn't able to find in a high enough resolution. I also included at the end a short essay from @mylordshesacactus that I feel is on a similar theme. I'm real happy with how these came out!
Tagging @mumblesplash and @wonderwyrm in case they're interested!

The first of my FTH binds, @ineffable-kelpie’s series Fact and Fantasy, very compelling, great characterization and some very interesting ocs. I enjoyed doing the typeset, I hope you enjoyed the cassette, cyan, I rather ran with that. Although cyan said not to include Double Feature, I couldn’t omit it and added it as a brochure bind. Thank you for your winning bid, and I hope you enjoy your book 🥰

Fanbinding of The Humbling River by mysterycyclone on ao3
link to the fic
The book is an a4 quarto, so is about 15cm x 10cm. It is 528 pages long and is about 3.5cm thick.
This one was my first attempt at rounding a book, which I think is now my preffered way of doing things. It makes the book look more elegant and professional. I also attempted painted edges for this one as well, I just used watered down acrylic paint, with a layer of silver to start and then speckled some black and white on top. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
The endbands were also a first attempt at using more than 2 colours, which did make things more complicated but I like how it turned out so I think it was worth the extra hassle.
The text paper for this one is 75gsm sugarcane paper, the endpapers are handmade pastepapers and the cover material is heritage metallic buckram. The heritage buckram is my new favourite bookcloth, it's such a lovely material to work with and has a lovely texture to it.
For the body text I used the font courier new, title font is powderfinger and the chapter headers are powderfinger type. I felt like these fonts somewhat went with the vibes of the fic, they give it a nice feel as well.
I enjoyed reading this fic a lot and I really enjoyed making it into a physical copy, it'll now be taking its place on my bookshelf :)

Fanbinding: Atlas by distractedKat

Bind #23
Atlas by distractedKat
Date Completed: 4/10/2025
Size: Folio, 135,529 words, 432 pages
Copies: 1
This is a pretty classic Star Trek AOS series about the final semesters of the Academy after the Narada incident and the maiden voyages of the Enterprise.  Starts out light and then gets pretty dark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun with the typeset on this one.  It was originally a series of four stories so I found a vaguely planetary dingbat font (52 Spheroids) and gave each section its own unique icon to go behind the title divider & chapter numbers.  Century for the body font at 10.2 size - as bad as the orphan words are at this random size they were worse when the font was smaller or larger.  Viner Hand for the titles picked solely on the “looks cool and already loaded on my computer” basis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This fic has always been red in my brain (probably because it starts at the Academy), so that was the spine settled and I had the perfect scrapbook paper in stash.  Casing this in was a struggle - I had to trim it several times to get a square cut so my margins are smaller than I planned, and then I somehow twisted the whole thing into a vaguely spiral shape when I rounded the spine.  Best not to look too closely at the coverboards in relation to the textblock!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again, I took too many pictures.

I made a thing! As a slightly late 1 year anniversary of the greatest album of all time release, I present you with
The Tortured Poets Department lyrics book
📋 typeset by the lovely @sayornispress 📖 bind by me (I still can't believe I did it!!!!) 👩🏻‍🏫 technical binding info and inspo from @phoenixortheflame, @wisewitchbindery and memoru (the last one is a Polish resource!)
This is a fanbind of the TTPD lyrics by Taylor Swift, made for personal use only. The typeset is made to mirror the official lyrics videos which is SO.COOL!
It will be a gift to a friend who introduced me to Taylor's music 🤍
My rambling about it under the cut below!
oh
my
god, I'm so excited!!!!! This is a very first bind that I share with an audience of more than 1 internet person so please be gentle with me haha
I only found out about what binding is and how AWESOME it is by fanfic binders here on tumblr. I do plan on ficbinding in the future so watch that space!! Honestly, having those beloved words on paper rather than your phone screen is just SO PRECIOUS.
It's actually my second bind. The first one is honestly still just so close to my heart I haven't shared it with the Internet yet, maybe in some time :') As I am just a beginner this bind has maaaany flaws - I didin't get the format right, trimming my text block with an old photo trimmer was a Bad Idea™, I printed the photo on the wrong end of the canvas so I had to just glue it on :D And so on and so on, but I'm gonna learn from these mistakes when creating the next one!!! For the things that did work out: I wanted the theme colours to be the colours of TTPD on the Eras Tour so white, black and gold. I used the plainest cream canvas available, with just a white and black photo on the cover, gold lettering on the spie and a lil sticker on the back. For endpapers I printed my favourite quotes from the songs and then foiled it. AND I managed to sew with a non-wax thread without crying too!
I had the ambition of starting from the very beginning - so making a typeset myself. And then I lost my patience about half an hour in and decided to stick to ready typesets first :D
Now, for the Taylor contents! I absolutely love the concept of lyrics videos, they just make the words really hit you, you know? So when I saw Phoebe very kindly sharing the Taylor typesets they made - I may have screamed a little :D And I absolutely knew that it will be a gift to a fellow Swiftie - a friend whose fault it is I am in this Taylor Swift-shaped madness since last year!
My Swiftie story is pretty new really - I liked Taylor, sure, I liked how kind she was, I liked her mainstream songs, absolutely loved how she DEVASTATED me with Safe and Sound back in my The Hunger Games era. But I didn't really know her other songs or much about her. And then Ela took me to the cinema to see The Eras Tour and well. Here we go, some months later and I am still going on and on about the brilliance of it. I got to see it life in Warsaw, which was a life-altering experience and couldn't get it out of my head ever since.
Hence, the literal studies of the lyrics :D
It really is a special moment for me because I dreamed of learning how to bind your own book. And it really is a full-circle kind of situation. Why? Well, because going to see the Eras Tour life made me believe dreams do come true - so chase them! So I went to bookbinding workshop, bought the materials and here we are!

Fanbinding: The Desert Storm (series) by @blue-sunshine-mauve-morning
Tumblr media
MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!
This is 1 of 2 posts for today, a massive project that I have hit a significant milestone for: completion of both my & the author's 15-volume set of the 1.1 million word The Desert Storm. This is the fic series that got me into Star Wars as an actual fan.
Four years after Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi Order, a grieving, struggling Ben Kenobi finds himself inexplicably taken back in time, crashing headlong into the foundations of fate. Grasping hope and vengeance with both hands, Ben rebuilds his identity and seeks to change the course of history: by saving Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Order, the galaxy - and just maybe saving Obi-Wan Kenobi along the way.
My design for this typeset was significantly influenced by mem, who had begun a typeset before me and selected black & white images for the title pages, a trend I continued.
Tumblr media
As this fic series has meteliculous attention to both canon & EU lore, I stuck with aurebesh characters for titles wherever appropriate, which occasionally gave me some fun opportunities for chapters & tables of contents like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For scene dividers, I used a image you can interpret either as twin suns, or as an eclipse.
Tumblr media
While I committed to a more classic and less elaborate design for this series, I still rounded & backed every volume in the set. "Editioning" high numbers of similar books like this is often considered in bookbinding circles as necessary to practice skills (I am at 37/45 volumes), and I can certainly say that I have gotten much better at a number of things along the way. The largest book in this series is 616 pages; the smallest, 160 - and I needed to round & back both.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further thoughts...
Blue_Sunshine (the author) has a fantastic skill for foreshadowing; reread of this series are a must. On top of that, character relationships are consistently and realistically fleshed out and developed. And critically for a "go back in time" story, Blue has a wonderful grasp of the dominoes - what changes trickle down and ripple out; and how that could come back to bite some people. Finally - if you live a badass Obi-Wan Kenobi, this is definitely a fic series for you. Also Blue is a lovely person & our little bits of correspondence has been such a bright spot for me.
Material notes: Duo oatmeal bookcloth, orange marbled jute from Sustain and Heal, hammermill cream paper, gold foil + paint for titles.
