i know i post a lot about racism and other fetishy/orientalist themes in Star Wars media, past and present, but in light of John Boyega's most recent interview, as well as previous statements from Kellie Marie Tran, i believe that now is the time, now more than ever, to hold creators, writers, and directors accountable for this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and one of the best ways you can do this, especially if you are not a fan of colour, is to boost the voices of people of colour who are speaking out against this. listen. learn. provide space and treat others with dignity. stop praising creators for being inclusive when they only give crumbs of diversity and fall short of true inclusivity and proper representation. use your platform to elevate voices of colour instead of drowning out the cries, even if your own cries are well intentioned
sometimes the hardest part about being an ally is knowing when to be quiet

the way people view my race in america has made it so very hard to distance myself from femininity
i could do anything to my body and still be viewed as a small, cute asian girl
really fks me up that people think it’s okay to tell others who obviously have a poor relationship w femininity that they look feminine and will always look cute no matter what
v not ok

Lana Condor to Star in Rom-Com ‘Moonshot’ for Greg Berlanti, HBO Max
Moonshot is set in a future where Mars is terraformed and colonized by the best humanity has to offer. Two very different college students wind up joining forces and sneak onboard a space shuttle to the red planet in order to be united with their significant others.
Condor will star as focused and buttoned-up college student, Sophie. She is a woman with a plan — or at least, she was before her boyfriend Calvin moved to Mars, and she decided to go after him. (via THR)

Amazon Sets Mystery-Comedy ‘Nancy Wu Done It’ From Kai Yu Wu And Jessica Henwick
The new comedy series titled Nancy Wu Done It comes from writers and executive producers Kai Yu Wu (co-executive producer of Amazon’s Paper Girls and Carnival Row) and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist and Game of Thrones actress) and is described as a mashup of Pleasantville and Nancy Drew.
The story follows a frustrated Asian American female YA author who suddenly finds herself transported into one of her own books. As a result, she must work with the titular character she created — who she now hates — to solve an unfinished mystery. (via Deadline)

I always expect the awards system to ignore people of color + women and yet I'm always surprised and offended when they do. It's like I never learn, no matter how many years it happens in a row. You'd think I'd take the hint.

I saw this and thought that more people should see it. I think that this girl is speaking the truth and I have so much respect for her. Plus there are still trainees who haven’t been debuted yet, even if they have so much talent and have been training for years. I don’t think it’s fair to them.

Is it just me, or does racism against asians (esp east asians) seem almost "acceptable"? Our skin is just light enough to be counted as "white" by some standards, but never fully white due to our culture and looks. But like the other anon said, the model minority myth makes it seem like other poc can take shots at us too? It's really depressing.
Oh definitely.
I can’t remember who said it but an Asian woman said that Asian Americans were the “weapons” but not the “warriors.” The saying refers to the concept that we‘re used by whites to further their narrative and conversely, we are also used by non-whites to further theirs. But we aren’t in control of ourselves nor using our own means to create our own narrative. We’re just here to be used and thrown around by different groups when the time calls for it.
If you think about it like that, she’s fucking right lol. And there are Asian folks that will stand with whites and allow themselves to be the white weapon. Then there are other Asian folks that will stand with non-whites and allow themselves to be the non-white weapon. Then there are people like me who are like “wait a fucking minute. I don’t want to take part in either of this bullshit” because neither one of them treats us as warriors but instead, we’re treated as weapons to be used for their own causes.
Idk about y’all but I want to be both the warrior and the weapon. As selfish as it may sound, I want to own myself and my stories and experiences and everything else. Of course there will be times when we need to be a weapon and other times a warrior but at the end of the day, I want to be both for me. For my friends. My family. My folks. For some of y’all.
We need ask ourselves, are we okay being one or the other? Or can we be both? All I know is I don’t want to be the weapon exclusively, especially not to be wielded by others who don’t care about me.

I can’t just say “Fuck it” and then hurt you the way that Nate did. I’m sorry, but that would kill me if I did that to you.

shout out to forgotten asians.
shout out to south asians: asians from india, pakistan, sri lanka, bangladesh, afghanistan, bhutan, maldives.
shout out to ignored east asians from countries less romanticized than china, japan, and south korea: to mongolia, taiwan, vietnam, and further southeast to singapore, malaysia, the phillipines, east timor, brunei, cambodia, myanmar, laos, thailand.
shout out to ethnic groups within more known asian countries, like the tibetan people in china and the ainu and ryukyuan people in japan.
shout out to russian asians. shout out to central asians in former soviet countries, to people from kazakhstan, turkmenistan, tajikistan, uzbekistan, kyrgyzstan.
shout out to western asians in countries that don’t fit neatly into trivial western/european geographical boundaries of the middle east, of south asia, of europe, of africa.
shout out to mixed asians, to latinax asians, to black asians, to indigenous asians, to mixed south and east asians, and every combination.
asian people are more than just the same few ethnicities shown on tv.
