Green - The Colour of Life
Here’s why we are loving green! Green is the color of life, renewal, safety, and growth - which right now, the world needs a lot of. The color green is understood to be the most restful and relaxing color for the human eye to view. It’s also though to have great healing power - a perfect example being our NZ greenstone or Pounamu. It’s energy is well known to aid anxiety and relieve stress and holds spiritual significance. Being a natural colour, green is a top choice in interior design as an ideal background or backdrop because we as humans are so used to seeing it everywhere in outdoor environments.

With the recent worldwide happenings surrounding the C word, we felt a touch of green would be a great way to liven up our space and bring relaxation in a time of uncertainty and fear, for both staff and customers. We had a chat with our friends at Resene and came away with a pot of their beautiful Zuchini Green which we applied to a feature wall in the front of our Ponsonby store. No regrets - we love it, and we reckon everyone else will too! In fact, we know one of our favourite interior stylists Amber Armitage is already on the same page as us, as she recently posted a picture of this amazing green themed setup she worked on including our light pendants. You could say the green has been stylist approved!

When it comes to decor and interiors a bold deep green such as emerald or a classic forest green can feel dramatic in a space yet down to earth at the same time. Pair it with black, white and metallic accents for a high contrast, high impact space. There are a huge range of hues that compliment a medium to dark green piece of furniture or feature wall. Colours such as tan, camel, mustard, brass or other metallic accents are a great job to harsh contrast. Furniture such as rattan or warm light woods compliment green perfectly. Neutrals that work best are creams, greys and blacks.
Thinking about adding some green to your own space? We have put together a few of our green favourites to help you out:
1. Dune Cushion in Olive
2. Slouch Sofa in Sage
3. Franklin Sofa in Chalk Olive
4. Luca Boho Cushion in Sage
5. Pimmy Ottoman in Green
6. Westhampton Sofa in Sage

Vivacious Velvet

Velvet is the interior trend that keeps on giving. A sure way to immediately inject elegance and comfort to a room, as well as colour, a velvet sofa is one of those items you really just need to take the plunge and purchase. You know you love it. Go on, be brave! Before the times of modern industrial fabrics, velvet was rather costly to produce and therefore was only available to the wealthy and royal families. Nobles in particular were drawn to its ability to accept richly hued dyes and the bright deep colours it produced, unlike any other fabric. Queen Elizabeth II still wears dyed velvet robes and regalia in formal ceremonies and it will most likely forever be seen as a luxurious fabric. For this reason, velvet will always add an element of luxe to your space, no matter what the piece.

Velvet adds a depth of colour that no other fabric can. While the fabric has been around for years, its recent rise to fame has added a freshness that's impossible to ignore and makes it the perfect pic for a room refresh. A rich velvet sofa can really lift and brighten up an otherwise ‘boring’ room - a rich red, a mossy green or a petrol blue work wonders in a monochromatic space for that dramatic pop of colour. On the other hand, create contrast with a coloured feature wall offset by a coloured velvet sofa.

It’s a common misconception that velvet is high maintenance, however modern day velvets are extremely durable and for a statement piece of furniture, durability is quite hard to come by. Velvet can last for decades if properly cared for and is just like leather (or a fine wine): It gets only better with age. Not quite ready to commit to the velvet couch? Start with a velvet chair! You don’t need an extra large piece of furniture to make a statement. Utilise space and give your wallet and break and go for something smaller such as the Murphy Velvet Armchair or even jazz up your dining space with velvet dining chairs such as the Sienna in Rust or Green.

Tried & Tested Terracotta

Terracotta is a natural material, which has been used in design for centuries. The word “terracotta” comes from Italian words “baked” and “earth.” Terracotta pottery is made via baking terracotta clay, hence its name. Terracotta these days is also used as a color name to describe a natural brown/orange color - a cozy range of shades.
In recent months terracotta has had something of a ‘rebrand’, with its rustic charm it continues to bring warmth to many modern interior settings.
Terracotta shades, although often vibrant, are relatively easy to combine well with other earthy organic colors and materials such as wood, concrete, rich velvets, and leathers. Furthermore, it is also important to keep this old world decor style fresh and contemporary by combining it with elements such as botanicals and bold prints.
On the other hand, it also pairs well with neutral decor- crisp whites and muted blues/greys. Navy Blue paired with terracotta and hues of dusty pink suggest the atmosphere of Moroccan houses and art. The terracotta helps to warm a cold color like blue and you get an interesting graphic effect that plays with contrasts.
An orange, red or tan accent chair might seem like a risky piece but in a modern, neutral setting a lone vibrant chair will instantly become a showstopper and add an energised feel to the space. Creating a focal point in a room with accent chairs is a trend that you can be assured is here for a good time and a long time. A buttery tan or oxblood leather sofa can also completely transform the look of a room from cold to warm. Clay or brick toned leathers can still play the role of a neutral piece and are easily paired with other colours, patterns, or even another kind of sofa.
Drive away any sense of boredom with some art for your floor. Swap out your plain rug for one of our handwoven Balouch Sofreh Kilim rugs for an instant, firey pop of colour. There are 100s available in a range of sizes and patterns. Take a piece of history home with a traditional rug that is around 60-90 years old, from southwest and central Afghanistan. The colours are truly stunning!
If you’re after a fresh lick of paint, we can highly recommend Resene for their huge range of colours such as Orange Roughy, Ayers rock, Chilean Fire or Alert tan to get your feature wall fix.
If you’re not after a dramatic statement piece, fresh paint, or a big change, opt for rich velvety cushions with complimentary throws in deep burgundy, rust red, or burnt orange for a more subtle injection of colour. Other homeware options are bright vases or wall art. Several of our pieces of artwork by the talented Jai Vasicek feature bright shades of orange, red, and pink that work with this trend perfectly if you are after an easy addition to a room.

World Cup Comfort - Sofas you won’t want to get up from!
Why would you head to the local and get pushed and shoved only to glimpse a fraction of the rugby world cup on the big screen? Possibly because you haven’t found the perfect relaxed sofa that gives all the comfort you need.

Next to a bed, a sofa is easily the most valued piece of furniture in the house so it’s vital you get it right. Especially if your old mate Dave has had too many beersies and cant drive. He will be the one crashing on your couch and you’d hope its comfy for him - LEGEND!
The relaxed construction of our casual sofas deliver a comfortable, welcoming look that invites all to sit down, kick back and even get horizontal.
The boys getting over excited at every try time could lead to a spillage, but at that moment you will realise slipcovers are a god send. Slipcover sofas, as most have discovered, are very practical and can make life alot easier when it comes to keeping them clean. Slipcovers can be easily removed and dry cleaned, you don’t have to worry about messy kids and pets (the joys!) especially if you choose a durable fabric such as linen or cotton.

On that note, you don’t need to be worried if you choose a white sofa. White sofas are a huge current trend - the fact that white goes with everything means that they will last you through your redecorating phases making them an ideal choice for longevity, as you can easily—and affordably—change out cushions and throws when your tastes change.
Some of our sofa styles even give you the option to order extra covers! Choose the same colour for new reupholstered look or switch up your scheme with a completely new colourway.

Advantages of this range of sofas:
Easy to clean! Linen is naturally anti-microbial and is actually considered to be one of the cleanest fabrics because its fibers are so tightly woven that it prevents dust particles from becoming embedded in the material. For families who suffer from seasonal allergies, linen should be a top consideration. All 3 are able to be professionally dry cleaned - we do not recommend machine washing these (aside from the Montauk)
Soft and comfortable. Cotton, Linen and Jute are all comfortable options, much more so than leather or vinyl, and become even smoother with use.
Natural fabrics. These 3 fabrics are natural fabrics that require minimal chemical processing, meaning they are more environmentally friendly than other upholstery options and align with our environmental and ethical views.
These fabrics are breathable and have good abrasion resistance, making them long-lasting and durable.

Road to Marrakesh

Feeling in a style rut? One way that you can begin to refresh and change the appearance of your home is by looking to a country for inspiration.
Ever considered Moroccan style? It provides a wealth of inspiration with its exotic combinations of textures, colours and patterns. Moroccan decor can be classed as adventurous and exciting, offering the opportunity to mix earthy tones and hints of turquoises, fuschias and emeralds in the same setting that exude a feel of richness, or perhaps a clash of metals and mosaics.
The unique style specific to Morocco blends influences from various cultures and religions. Most dominant is the captivating Moorish architecture with its detailed texture and geometry seen throughout North Africa, Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean... or more ancient influences from Persia.
In the early 20th century, France occupied the nation and essentially began colonising it, as a result, French architectural elements were tossed into the blender. While traditional Moroccan interiors are often extravagant and full of intricate moorish detail, modern interpretations are a great fit to a contemporary home.
Whilst you may instinctively think bright colours when envisioning a Moroccan inspired interior, an alternative way to do get the look would be to keep the colours fairly neutral. By doing this, you’re creating a look that is elevated in sophistication and less likely to be seen as too “themed”.
Below are some tips to incorporating this exotic style in your home:
Art For the Floor
A beautiful handwoven rug or one of our Beni Ourain wool rugs can create a ornate and sophisticated look in simple lounge making a perfect base for a Moroccan style room.
Reflect Colourful Decor
Mirrors enhance ambiance by subtly reflecting light and adding adornment to walls. Look for mirrors with decorative wrought iron work, deeply carved wood and metal or jewel embellishment.
Oasis-like Feel
Greenery placed in large colourful ceramic pots or exotic plants or woven baskets hung from the ceiling.
Canopies Overhead
Create your own Arabian night with richly hued sheer silk swagged over seating or dining areas. Netting above beds adds a mysterious touch, reminiscent of desert bazaar tents.
A Touch of Boho
Ideas for small finishing touches merged in the one setting: - A cluster of metal vases strategically placed on shelves - A bone inlay tray to hold remotes - Mediterranean tiles as coasters - Putting different shaped and styles of lanterns together - Placing an ottoman or leather pouf within your sofa set up - An arabesque wall sconce or light - Lattice room divider in a corner of a bedroom
Get it right and your home appears relaxed, yet vibrant and exotic. Fuel your creativity and convert your home into an extraordinary visual playground.

Take a walk on the wild side

Hone in on your inner Tarzan or Jane by taking some inspiration from around the globe and inserting a bit of jungle fever in your space.
Whether you're looking to add some personality to your living room or style your house from top to bottom, putting a safari themed spin on your interior is a fun way to add character to your home.
History can speak volumes and a story behind a theme is always fascinating.
The word Safari originates from the word 'Safar' an arabic verb that roughly translates to mean 'To make a journey'.
Trending as far back as the 1900's with Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable to Grace Kelly, the intervention of Hollywood provided another boost for safari, pushing it into the global limelight like never before.
To emulate this trend in your home you can add a range of creative elements to pull off a modern safari theme, subtropical elegance or military inspired style.
Whether you are a fan of adventure, wilderness, history or art, adding a touch of nature with foliage and using warm earthy tones is a great way to pull it all together. Accessorising with raffia and bamboo elements such as lampshades and bed-frames are ideal.
By now you may be channelling Indiana Jones or a hunter’s cabin full of mounted deer heads. The modern safari theme reaches beyond these concepts into something much more chic and practical.
Don’t be afraid to mix up textures such as furs, linen, canvas and leathers.
Also allow your safari decor to ‘breathe’ by balancing animal print with live greenery (I am currently the crazy plant lady!), solid block colours in open spaces with simple lines.
Step away from safe and boring, get adventurous and take a walk on the wild side.
