It is no secret I love this character. (The crowd gasps in utter shock 💀) and this character’s oceanic depth has impacted me so immensely - in more ways than just losing sleep filling up notebooks of new thoughts and questions.

As such, while there are a gazillion ways to analyze Trigun’s Legato Bluesummers, I wanted this concept shoot to focus on ⚠️ implied spoilers ahead ⚠️ his particularly complex relationship to power and control as it relates to cycles of abuse. His place in this vicious circularity is evident from the tiniest details in the way he dresses to the most poignant of his words and actions within the narrative.

This part of Legato’s characterization is, in my opinion, Trigun’s greatest challenge to Rem’s “blank ticket” philosophy that underlines Vash’s belief system and as such places him to become one of the most difficult, nuanced, complex characters of all time and a particularly tough adversary for Vash.

One of the most tragic things in this characterization (and that’s saying a lot) is that within Legato’s own mindscape - even if he does not consciously acknowledge the distinction, it is plainly paneled for the audience in a side by side parallel - as Legato sees the similarities between himself and Vash, Legato pictures himself younger and with a chain around his neck while Vash is present and unbound. While sharing the sensibility Legato is pinpointing, the way it manifests for each of them respectively is what makes them different and what deepens the audience’s understanding of Vash vs Legato and what they represent in Trigun’s greater meaning and takeaways.
