That's it. I get why I feel Vash killing Legato hits harder in the manga than it does in the 98's anime.
When Vash pulls the trigger he doesn't just break his vow of non-killing to his mother but he also has to accept the death of Rem and Wolfwood at the same time.
When he kills Legato, it's the moment he let them go.

Love that trigun requires you to trust in the process but also Nightow just drops stuff that makes no sense and never will and I love that too, all the crazy is mixed in with the intense foreshadowing and symbolism. Why is Vash such a pacifist? You'll see. What's the deal with Wolfwood and his giant cross? There's information later. Wolfwood’s orphanage? Important. Vash’s mom? You bet she's central to the plot. How do Legato's powers work? We may never know
