Great moments in research funding.
Eratosthenes "...knew it was 800 km. Why? Because he hired a man to pace out the entire distance..."

If you have lost your research funding, crowdfunding may help BUT it isn't always straightforward. Here is my quick guide of what to think about.

Yes, but no. I'm reading 'How to be a happy academic' by Alexander Clark and Bailey Sousa. I really want to like it, but the tone grates again and again.
This quote, "Being influential is an important part of academic life" (page 146), is true. But it sits within a discussion of rhetoric and ways to deliberately influence people. It instrumentalises the idea of influencing people.
There are so many ways to think about influence. The sense of consensus and debate that comes through collegial discussion. Influence through listening and being supportive. The influence that comes from setting a good example. That's not the way that 'influence' is positioned here.
Then again, what do I know. All the pull quotes might have been selected by a sub-editor.

No photos, but today I turned in my hot mess of an article revision. I’m pretty nervous that the reviewer won’t find it sufficient, even though I’ve been working on it (on and off) for like six months. If I have to go through the revise and resubmit (rather than conditional accept) I’ll…I mean I’ll do it but also I’ll combust.

For those that aren't aware, Jo Van Every's 'A meeting with your writing' is now available at times that work for Australia and New Zealand. Jo has been running 'A meeting with your writing' for the last decade, and many people have found it helpful to get some writing done.

To avoid post-dissertation doldrums, Noelle Sterne suggests that you absolutely celebrate and take a break. Beyond that, she suggests some of these strategies might help: * Set a date to revisit your dream. * Explore academic avenues (if you want to stay in academia). * Look at consulting opportunities if you don't want to stay in academia. * Write articles out of your dissertation. * Look at your 'later' list. She's not suggesting that you do all these things (or even any of these things). She is suggesting that you can take some time to reflect and work out what next, and some of these activities might help.

Conference on a train! "The European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS) invites proposals ... for the 20th ESCAS conference, which will take place in Tashkent and Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In line with regional traditions, the conference will have a nomadic format and be held in collaboration with the Tashkent State University of Economics. This format will allow you to experience different academic environments and network with colleagues from various disciplines." They are booking attendees onto the train to Samarkand! They have travel grants (250 euro) for regional scholars. This isn't even my area, and I want to go to this conference! Thanks, Able Polese, for letting me know about this.

You Can’t Outwork Your ADHD - Voices of Academia
"In my experience, you can try to outrun the negative voices in your head, outwork them, numb yourself with whatever brings you momentary pleasure, but sooner or later they can take over your mind and paralyze it, thus becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy." - Anonymous, on Voices of Academia, 18 October 2024.
Voices of Academia is publishing some of the best blog posts right now. Absolutely stunning material that is really needed, and really valuable. Thank you, Voices of Academia.
