Cowboys + Vampires = yes please

When I first started writing Vampire Therapist, this guy was the player character.

Andromachos is 3000 years old. He's experienced, strong, and intimidatingly good looking. When I started putting him in front of the game's therapy clients, I found that Andromachos was so wise, he sucked all the humor out of the room. Beyond that, I think his clients were a little afraid of disappointing him.

I recast him in the role of mentor, and as an experiment, I recast the therapist as a cowboy, doing a silly voice in my studio. But it stuck. It turns out that a cowboy was just what the Vampire Therapist story needed. Cowboys are more attuned to the earth -- they "touch grass." They're more folksy, much easier to approach than a character like Andromachos. I also needed a character that would learn along with the player, which is how I came up with Sam Walls.

Here are some of our earlier renderings of Sam. Since he's *been through it*, we wanted to show some world weariness and humanity.

He looks great! He's a very handsome fella, crushworthy in his own right. But the core of Vampire Therapist is in compassion and humor, so we needed to lighten up Sam some. If you've played the game, you know he's a pretty lighthearted fella!

These are some of @nomnomroko's first renderings of Sam. You can see her style coming through here, retaining Sam's humanity but with the harder line style that we use on Vampire Therapist to make characters extra characterful and expressive. We decided on a mix of C and D, and got to work on some of the first pose renderings.

You can see the benefits of the Vampire Therapist style coming through already in the highly expressive faces we needed to depict a truly compassionate therapist! Also, @nomnomroko's extraordinary hands.

Costume choices. This was feeling a little formal, and we thought we could play to our strengths even more by showing a bit more skin. After more tweaks and shading, we had our man.

It's incredibly gratifying to see players resonating with Sam's sweetness, patience, and compassion, and his character design really helps reinforce those characteristics. The most common word we get associated with him is "adorable," and although that might make him feel awkward, I guess one can't argue with reality.

I’ve been meaning to make Hunter’s Moon in a somewhat similar style as the game and Yehya Badr deserve some spotlight as well, not just as a strategist but also with his relationship with vampires (and characters growth)

I’ve listened to well over 100 hours of podcasts from a lot of different genres so I’m gonna give you some recommendations. These will all be audio dramas so no ttrpgs or conversation podcasts. Tricky Old Thing, Memory

The sky outside was starting to become gray and foggy, the tell-tale signs of rain. Also, the air was starting to smell with the lovely petrichor scent that John knew Sherlock always liked. Sherlock had said it helps him think; John just knew it always makes his leg ache. But the smile on Sherlock’s face at the sigh of rain was more than enough for John to stay quiet about his complaints. 

John was currently outside with Archie walking him around Regent’s Park; he had planned on going for a bit longer. However, he didn’t want Archie to get all soaked from the rain, and he knows that the lad hates it. Also as mentioned prior, John’s leg always starts to ache. 

So when he feels the first drop of rain hit his scalp, he pulls out his umbrella ready to start his way back to the flat. The rain came faster than John was physically prepared for. His leg would start acting up with the change in air pressure, so the only speed he could head back to the flat with was a brisk walk. Archie wasn’t a fast walker either, so definitely the only speed he could go at.

They pass some joggers on their way back, looking way too proud to be running in the rain. Then they pass the volunteer and it would only be a few more steps before they make their way into 221B. There was a strange feeling inside of John’s chest as he approached the flat. He couldn’t quite name the feeling, but it was ever apparent. 

It felt like he was forgetting something, but he couldn’t quite figure out what that thing was. Maybe it was an important date? Like a dentist appointment, or some kind of holiday. He feels like he’d know if it was a holiday. Sherlock never shuts up about the holidays he likes. It’s endearing in a way. 

Upon making his way up the stairs, and placing the umbrella in the hall, he pulls out his key and opens up the door. 

Mariana was on the couch sleeping, her legs draped over the arm of the couch, and her mouth open as she drools. He chuckles lightly, and rolls his eyes. And Sherlock calls him a bad sleeper , the prick. It did look like a nice nap. Maybe he should take a nap.

That sounded like a nice idea after John makes dinner for the three of them. It was a low energy kind of day, so he assumed that penne pasta would be satisfactory. He unleashes Archie from his harness, kicks off his shoes, and makes his way over towards Sherlock’s door. 

He gives it a small brisk knock. 

There’s no answer.

Strange , John thought as he furrows his brow and gives another knock. Once more and he still doesn’t get an answer. Which is weird for Sherlock. He typically will at least give him a disgruntled grunt if he really didn’t want to speak. He may send John a quick text his way if he was feeling that low energy.

He knew Sherlock could get like that sometimes, this feeling of your jaw being wired shut, or your body not responding the way it should be. At least that’s how Sherlock had explained it once. So since then, they have gotten some communication cards. Which had been useful, not only for Sherlock, but sometimes for John. He’d use them when the pain in his leg was excruciating and he didn’t have the energy to use words. It was rare for that to happen though. John hates opening Sherlock’s door without permission, but he wanted to make sure the lad was in there. So he does, and finds his bed emptied. However, his bedsheets and pillows were all wrinkled. Sherlock never leaves his bed like that. Not if he can help it. Sherlock’s room was always so neat. Now, however, it was messy. Like someone had come in and ransacked the place. 

Weird.

He looks around the rest of the flat, and when all the other rooms are empty he goes to Mariana. She was still asleep, so he felt a bit bad having to wake her up. He tries waking her with a gentle shake, and then a couple more not-so-gentle shakes. She then groggily opens her eyes.

“Mmm- John?” Mariana mumbles, drool slightly leaking from the corners of her mouth. She sits up more and wipes at her mouth. She yawns into her next words. “W-what’s happenin’?”

“Hey, sorry to wake ya, Mari. But uh- have you seen Sherlock?”

The look she gives him is almost terrifying. Her usual tan face was pale white as she cautiously placed a hand on his shoulder. Her brown eyes wide and horror struck as she opened her mouth. Any amount of sleep left in her body had quickly faded. She quickly swallows before saying, “John…”

“What?” He’s confused on why she’s acting like this. He just wanted to make some penne pasta for his friends. Has Sherlock done something? His memory was a bit fuzzy at the moment, he blamed the rain. He remembers liking the sound of rain, but now… now it made him itch. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“John… John are you… are you being serious right now?” She looks almost hurt. Her eyes started to water.

“Mariana, what did I do?” He was worried now, had something happened to Sherlock? Had the two of them had a fall out and he hadn’t remembered? Oh good lord he hopes not, the fog in his mind was disorientating.

“Sherlock’s dead, John.” Mariana was blunt as she said it. John stares at her for a few seconds. He’s looking at her like she’s insane, and then it hits him.

John’s eyes widen as he whips his head back. John quickly covers his ears as suddenly the sound of large cascading waterfalls crashes into his ears. He feels the fog in his mind clear as he remembers it all too clearly now. He remembers his grip slipping, the sound of his own voice screaming, and the loud waterfall drowning everything else out. 

He remembers seeing his best friend fall into the depths below. He remembers that he told him not to be upset, that he had done his best. John couldn’t believe him, not when he wasn’t good enough to pull him back up.

That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair that his best mate died. It wasn’t fair that his mind decided to play this trick with him. He couldn’t believe it. He forgot. He fucking forgot.  

He lets out a wheeze of a sob that almost turns into a manic laugh. He falls to the ground, hugging his knees, and covering his ears as the sound of the waterfall suffocates him. He couldn’t breathe, the pressure on his chest was too much. It was like he was drowning. He was always scared of drowning.

“No. No. This is- is some kind of cruel joke-” He wheezes out the sentence, not daring to take his hands away from his ears. “I wouldn’t- I wouldn’t forget something like that-”

That’s why Sherlock’s bed was like that. Because John had slept in it the night before. He had hoped the feeling of Sherlock’s bed would bring back his friend. It didn’t. Nothing did, and now his brain was like this. Playing cruel tricks on him. 

“John…” Mariana kneels next to John, placing a hand onto his shoulder. He flinches away from her touch, and faces away from her. He can’t handle her touch right now, he’s afraid she’s not even real himself. He can hear her sigh, despite the roaring in his ears.

“Grief is cruel,” She starts, her voice starting to wobble. “It’s different for everyone, and- and the mind tries to adapt. Tries to make it less hard, but- but it’s always hard, John. Losing him…”

“He’s- he’ll come home. He’s Sherlock.” His voice cracks as he shifts his body to face Mariana. “He- he-” He crashes into Mariana’s arms, holding her close to him. “He will Mariana.” 

“John…”

“I can’t- I can’t believe I forgot.” He looks at her, his brows creased and his eyes starting to water once more. Soon it turns into a full sob, not able to stop the flow behind his eyes.

Mariana holds him closer and whispers soothing words as John cries into her shoulder. He could feel her tears falling against his back as well. He holds her tighter, scared she’d also disappear underneath his grip if he didn’t. He can’t lose anyone else he loves. It’ll ruin him. 

The two of them stayed in each other's grasp until Mariana pulled back. She gently brushes her fingers against his cheek, wiping away tears. “We have to stay strong, for each other okay?”

“Okay,” he says softly and takes a deep breath. “I- I’ve dealt with grief before with- my… my dad-”

“Oh no, no, John, you don’t have to,” Mariana’s voice is softly, almost like John’s fragile and will break. Her hands reach out to hold John’s. He takes them, he needs something to steady him right now.

“It’s weird now, because- my dad died and I- I don’t- I don’t remember saying goodbye to him.” He sniffles, trying not to look at her. It might make his crying worse. He had told Sherlock that, when his memory was fuzzy. “But with Sherlock- I- I watched him fall.” 

“I know, John…”

“I couldn’t do anything, he just- I wasn’t strong enough.”

“It’s not your fault, John.”

“But it is!” He yells louder than he had intended. He sees Mariana flinch back. “If I had been stronger or- or if I’d been able to deduct like him what he was going to do. I could have saved him. But I wasn’t- I’m never good enough.” He starts crying again as he leans back against the couch once more.

Mariana looks taken aback, her own thoughts plastered on her face. John couldn’t read them like Sherlock could, but he didn’t want to. He doesn’t want her pity. He wants his friend back.

After a few seconds of silence Mariana leans against him, and just lets him cry against her. “That’s not true.” She tells him, but John doesn’t have the energy to fight her on this. He doesn’t have enough energy to do anything. So the two of them just cry. They cry and cry and cry until no more tears can be produced. So they sit there in silence, not able to make any more noise beside soft sniffles. 

After an hour passes, Mariana notices that John’s fallen asleep from the energy spent. She quietly grabs Sherlock’s old weighted blanket, and wraps it over her friend. She tries to make it more comfortable by propping pillows up around him. She doesn’t want him to be in more pain than he already is. She misses how confident he used to be. 

She lays down onto the couch, and hugs herself to sleep, finding small comfort in Archie coming up to lay at her feet. She misses her friend, and she hates the hole he left behind in them. She almost resents him, but she can’t. She can’t because it was Sherlock, and she misses him. Mariana does manage to fall asleep, missing her boys more than she could possibly say.

It’s a quiet evening in 221A.
