okay so I’m not the best at explaining things like this, but I will try my best.

I’m sure many of you have noticed the header changes with the update that happened last month. If you have been using a header with a border, you will have seen that part of it has been cropped off and is no longer the appearing the same on desktop. I’ve done a bit of investigating into this because it was driving me insane, but first a couple of things:

dimensions: 640px x 360px - this is the size I use for all of my headers, so this post is based on that. I believe there are different sizes that people use, but this is the size I have found that works the best. 

this is a desktop issue - this seems to be fine for mobile (so if you haven’t been on desktop and are only using mobile you probably wouldn’t have noticed this)

I’ve heard that this might also vary depending on the size of screen that you are using (though I have not tested this). I’m using a standard 13″ windows laptop so this post is based off of that screen size. 

for the update: 

if you view your blog on the right side bar on desktop from the dashboard, posts page, drafts page (basically any page that has been consistent with the update layout) you will notice that your header is being cropped from both the the top and bottom by 25px.

however, if you view your blog on the right side bar from the activity feed page, for example, you will see your header is fine - this is because the update did not effect the layout of this page. yay inconsistencies

how to fix:

I am still using 640px x 360px for my overall header dimensions

when creating headers without borders - you might have to scene select differently so that you are okay with tumblr cutting off part of your image from both the top and the bottom.

when creating headers WITH borders - I add a layer that includes a 25px strip of solid fill over the image at the bottom and I will start my border on top of that, that way when it crops it the border still looks fine. *you do still have to be comfortable via scene selection with the fact that tumblr will still cut off 25px from the top - sadly no work around for that. 

that’s pretty much all I know and this is what seems to be working for me to continue to post and use headers without it looking shanked.
