There have been many different views and definitions of God|Deity throughout the ages and millennia as humanity’s understanding has grown, developed, and evolved as it crawled and groped about in ignorance, superstition, and darkness.

I believe that it is the responsibility of each individual to “work out [their] own souls salvation” and to “seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him”.

In my spiritual quest, this is the working-definition of God that I’ve come to:

“God is the name that I give to the very personal, individual, yet universal experience|feeling of reverential awe for the Eternal, Spiritual, Transcendent Mystery that lies within and back of all reality. I also know “God” in my life as: Spirit. Soul. Substance. Mind. Principle. Truth. Love.”

My inspiration for this working-definition comes from various sources including The Bible, Eastern Texts: The Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads, and the words and writings New Thought teachers and schools from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Norman Vincent Peale (May 31, 1898 – December 24, 1993) was an American minister and author known for his work in popularizing the concept of positive thinking, especially through his best-selling book The Power Of Positive Thinking. He served as the pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York, from 1932 until his transition in 1993 at the age of 95.

Peale's ideas and techniques were not without controversy; he received frequent criticism both from [orthodox Christian clergy] and certain psychiatric professionals of his day.

Yet these attacks did not dissuade him. Peale was well received by people across the political and religious spectrums. He was friends with Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton.

The Reverend Billy Graham once said about Peale:

I don't know of anyone who has done more for the kingdom of God than Norman and Ruth Peale or have meant any more in my life for the encouragement they have given me.

President Reagan awarded Peale, for his contributions to the field of theology, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest civilian honor in the United States) on March 26, 1984.

President Clinton said after learning of his passing said:

The name of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale will forever be associated with the wondrously American values of optimism and service. Dr. Peale was an optimist who believed that, whatever the antagonisms and complexities of modern life brought us, anyone could prevail by approaching life with a simple sense of faith. And he served us by instilling that optimism in every Christian and every other person who came in contact with his writings or his hopeful soul.
