Maiden Review: Fortnite.
Tumblr media
Fun, but initially frustrating. But not necessarily in a bad way. 8.5/10
Fortnite excels at giving you the resting heart rate of an Olympic athlete. Moments of euphoric dominance as you gaze menacingly across the battlefield -through the sights of your dazzling sniper rifle- from your metal tower of false protection, intertwine seamlessly with heart attack inducing, close-combat shotgun warfare that is entirely reminiscent of old Halo titles -“Go ahead and, jump, JUMP!“-.
Fortnite takes Battle Royale to the next level -building pun intended-. Initially, the construction felt almost gimmicky, but that was more than likely due to my inexperience with the games format -I’m a PUBG player at heart, no h8 pls-. In the beginning, my frustrations would peak when I found myself dead by a rocket launcher fired from the top of brick skyscraper, as I exclaim: “Get down and fight me!”. Soon I would learn the importance of craftsmanship. For a game that appears lighthearted, it certainly has a steep learning curve. Mastery of the building mechanics will certainly propel you to those top 10 finishes.
Anyone familiar with other Battle Royale games -H1Z1, or PUBG- will find the gunplay fairly intuitive. Personally, I found the shotguns incredibly fun to use, but not very reliable in the vast map. Snipers, on the other hand are very fun. Nothing will beat the feeling of that first one bullet headshot. The assault rifle, however, is the everyday tool. When you’re neither up close; or miles away, the assault rifle should be in your hand. Overall, the gunplay is of a fairly high standard.
The map itself is interesting. Players of PUBG will find the map open and expansive, but ultimately lacking in depth. H1Z1 players will find the map fairly similar in design, and will probably feel right at home. Loot is often scarce, and the primary objective is to find jukeboxes -not actually jukeboxes, but weapon crates that sing… no mistake there- and get yourself that beautiful golden sniper you know you deserve -amongst other weapons like... sigh... rocket launchers 😔-.
Fortnite is certainly a game worth playing -especially for the price…-. If you’re a PUBG fan like me, you’ll probably love it. Just remember, initially, to complain about the building and how you know it’s for children, but one day, you’ll be looking down on them from your death tower, and chuckle, as you end their pitiful existence.
