Writing My 1st Web Series
Over the past four weeks I have been assigned to write my own original web series. I was instructed to writing the pilot, second episode, and an outline for the third episode. This experience was daunting, inspiring and eye-opening to say the least. In the end, I am so glad that I rose up to the challenge.
At the beginning of this assignment I was a little discouraged. It is so annoying to have so many ideas come you on a regular basis and then as soon as your creativity is put to the test...you draw a blank. I went back and forth for days trying to come up with an idea that would feel fresh and new. I wanted something that I personally have never seen on television or streaming platforms. So, after the frustration wore off I began thinking about writing something based loosely off of my work experience in the grocery industry.
When this idea came to me I immediately got excited. I have worked in this industry off and on for roughly eight years and the things that I have witnessed and heard would be a great setup for a show. I quickly began writing.
This whole experience has been motivating. I can definitely see myself being a writer for a show. My only dilemma is figuring out whether I would want to write comedy or drama. I know that traditionally writers either do one or the other but I am honestly trying to figure out how I can do both. In the end, I may just have to write shows that come off as a hybrid of the two. I will continue to read and write more with hopes of becoming better as well as produce my web series. Even though it took me longer than I anticipated to come up with my series, I’m glad that I pushed through and can’t wait to see where it goes.
