gerard talking about agism and the fear that you’ll basically be tossed aside as you get older. (x)
considering the way some people have talked about him and the others in my chem aging, it’s interesting to hear him articulate this feeling so well.

when gerard way sings "the broken, the beaten, and the damned" and when kermit the frog sings "the lovers, the dreamers, and me" they're talking about the same people btw

do you think you could expand on what you mean wrt the scene with betty and simon in the car? imo i didnt see it as contradictory with the "choosing simon's options" thing. betty *is* oftentimes the one offering to sacrifice herself for simon, and it is always her doing what she wants; the way i interpreted it is that the point isnt that simon forced her to do something (or that he should have forced her to *not* do something, like get out of the car etc.), but instead that by not addressing that difference at all they ended up with a normalcy of betty unhealthily giving (which i think is also something set up really well in the original series, which i know you've said you missed). i'd really love to hear your thoughts, though!!!
i just think the cassa-nova game on the whole is... a bad metaphor for their situation
I know Betty sacrificed herself for Simon too much, and of course this is an unhealthy dynamic and Simon needed to realize it was happening
but I think comparing their situation to a choose your own adventure book was a poor choice
Simon's choices that we're shown in Jerry don't have such a straightforward consequence as "Simon did what he wanted and Betty shrunk away" like what happened with casper and nova.
In the scene in the car: Simon chooses to ask Betty to come along and get recognition with him. Betty does what she wants and leaves
When they meet at the presentation: Simon casually makes a joke about Betty coming on his expedition. Betty does what she wants and invites herself. Simon does nothing.
In the scene with the snakes: Simon chooses to ignore Betty's snake idea. Betty does what she wants and runs ahead.
Theres only one time Simon's choice directly causes Betty to give up what she wanted, and its at the bus.
Casper took the "my choices directly as opposed to Nova's" route. This was set up as a direct comparison to Simon and Betty. But the ideas just dont match up. I dont have a problem with the overall message that Betty gave too much and Simon didnt notice. I just think their execution of that idea was poor.

ok but actually it was so funny when simon was like "I wonder what life would have been like if I never found the crown, if I had put aside my passion for looking for highly cursed ancient artifacts" girl you and betty would have both died at war.

so many Chekhov’s guns unfired!
(aka i am frothing at the mouth over fionna and cake’s finale and have things I need to say)
what happened to thing glitching and becoming normal when fionna and cake touch them
what about the show cheers? why was the last episode named after it when it played almost no part
why is prismo glitching?
ASIDE FROM THAT
I both love and feel unsatisfied with the finale
It felt like Simon was spoonfed his revelations
the final episode felt like a rushed attempt at a ‘and they all lived happily ever after’
what happened to the rest of farm world Finn’s family? Did he die? Is he okay with his son leaving to go to another world forever? What about the other children?
why does Simon move on so fast? Not even a year? And he has to get basically spoonfed by a choose your own adventure book to come to the realisation his relationship with Betty was not exactly healthy
Also what happened to Marceline and regular Finn? Did they not notice Simon disappearing for a week? We needed more interaction between them!
HOW WOULD MARCELINE FEEL ABOUT HIM WANTING TO BE ICE KING AGAIN
WE NEEDED THIS INTERACTION
WE WERE STARVED
idk it wasn’t a BAD finale but it wasn’t amazing either
it felt okay
but I am definitely going to ao3 to get that missing angst and feelings
might even write something
(pls excuse any spelling mistakes this was made at 2am full of emotion after the finale with no checking)
but srsly I had tears in my eyes after ‘The Star’ and comparatively the ending feels shallow where everyone gets to live happily ever after and everything is fine with no heartfelt reunions or residual feelings about what just happened
did Simon just not tell anyone he went on a crazy multiverse adventure? Or was he just like lol this happened to me… MOVING ON! It isn’t shown if any of the people close to him know what he went through
pls I needed more Marceline
I am begging there is a season two
these guns need firing
and if hbo won’t do it
then I will

Episode 9
Let's give Simon an earlier realization of the problems in his relationship. Let's dedicate episode 9 to Simon coming to terms with those problems instead of literally spoonfeeding it to him in one episode. So let's say Simon goes into episode 9, taking Fionna's comments about Betty to heart, and so we revise the Betty scenes.
Fionna and Cake have their nightmare and return to their world like in the show. But when we cut back to Simon...
We see the Scarab wakes up before Simon in that endless void. He sees Simon fully unconscious and he rushes to him. But before he can end him, he looks up and freezes in place. The camera never shows what he sees but he yells at whoever to stay out of it. He tries to finish his job but inexplicably, he turns into tiny bug versions every single time he tries to hurt Simon. Until finally he skitters into Simon's world to escape whatever keeps thwarting him.
Zoom in on Simon's face. Eyes twitch almost as if their fluttering open. Smash cut.
A bus stop. Simon blinks and sees himself standing before Betty, her letter clutched in his hand.
Simon does the same thing he did in the show, he offers to go with her. Then he realize this isn't how it went. And Betty smiles. The world slowly dissolves to the black space. Tetris shapes begin to fill the void.
"Hi Betty, long time no see. It seems I haven't been fair to you. I kept looking to you like you're supposed to be everything. But being someone's whole world is… exhausting." Simon laughs wryly as he scratches his head with the back giving off a telltale sparkle. " I shouldn't have put that on you. And I should have noticed all that you were doing for me…"
Simon begins to transform from his professor looks to his post apocalyptic looks.
"You remain the great love of my life. Nothing can change that. But... we've changed, haven't we?"
Betty in turn begins to change, first into Simon's fiance then into Magic Betty.
Smash cut to Fionna and Cake desperately fighting for their lives.
"It was a long road to get here. And I have found more people to love."
Simon cycles into Ice King before finally transforming into his present self.
"And I should be so lucky that they love me back. I can't... I can't just leave them like this. I'm a sad old man that kept looking for lost things and missing the stuff right in front of his face. I want to do better, Betty. I have to."
Smash cut to Fionna and Cake again.
And Betty makes her final transformation into Golb. Simon finds himself standing in front of her in all her new glory. He feels his pocket buzzing and he realizes that they're in trouble.
"No, no, no. What was all that for? If I just keep going back?" He eyes the Crown before tossing it at Betty. "There has to be another way. I'm not done yet."
Betty's eyes lift up. She pulls out Fionna and Cake's world as in the show.
"Oh. Always rescuing me, even now..." Simon is more than a little bitter. But he takes the world and he gives it to Fionna.
Smash cut to Fionna and Cake as in show.
After, Simon looks up at Betty. The faint image of their past selves lurk over their shoulders as the same moment a thousand years apart repeats itself. With Simon looking up as Betty readies herself to leave.
"I can't do much for you now. But I will tell you what I should have told you then. Thank you for everything. If only I could come with you where you're going but since I can't... Then I hope you find your happiness wherever you go... Goodbye, Betty."
And then Betty does as she does in the show. Episode 9 ends with Simon in the flower field.
Episode 10 is a flashback to present Ooo. In the time since Simon's departure, his family and friends have worked themselves up, crazy with worry. It's a comedy of errors as each callback character comes up with worse and worse ideas to find Simon. Until mid episode Simon comes back to his house with a crown - a flower crown.
"Hey gang... uh... what's going on? are we having a party? ... At my house? Without telling me?"
"SIMON!"
Cue dogpile.
Cue epilogue.

They totally leaned way too hard on the framing of their incredibly complex and loving relationship with literally so many beats that has subliminally been this underlying cornerstone of the whole series since as early as season 4-5 as this "totally definitetly more on the toxic side + is totally unchangeable and unfixable" which isn't entirely deniable but its tone feels way more antagonistic than necesary
obviously the tragedy and unhealthiness in their relationship is their cycle of self-sacrifice for the other + undervaluing themselves, but that love and that compatibility was still there! It majorly ignored how mutual the incredibly long chain of both simon and betty spending ages trying to see/save the other, and I'm glad that betty's perspective is elaborated on slightly (again the last episodes had really rushed pacing and didn't take advantage of all of its incredibly unique cast, concepts, settings and universe, etc) but it overviewed everything they had together and created this really tone-deaf take that simon didn't appreciate her as much as he should as if he hasn't been spending next-to-forever grieving over all of her sacrifice and how much he knows and loves her. Their relationship is wonderful and complex and has so much depth, and I'm worried about the kind of misinterpretations of them and their characters that could stem from this ending.
Also, it was probably intentional, but it also just felt incredibly anticlimatic, especially compared to the A-plot in fionna's world. This isn't like when ships don't get together in other media either, after all of this series focusing on how this specific relationship between these two subliminally being the key and cornerstone to the entire universe existing the way it did, they just break up so easily without so much as a single struggle or tears or anything? and then they're just fine afterwards so easily never seeing each other again despite the love that shaped and impacted and rewrote the entire planes of existence they lived in. You're going to tell me there's literally no way in this magical multiverse with curses and dieties and paradoxes and everything imaginable that there is no way they can be safe and happy together. that's what's impossible? My tone's really salty but the buildup vs the execution is unbelievable. that doesn't feel like well-written tragedy, more like a climax that wasn't really thought through fully. I thought I was satisfied with the ending initially, and while it feels alright on the surface, actually thinking about it for more than five minutes really has me feeling dissapointed. They deserved so much more and so much better.

I had to make an epilogue to the Sock Princess comic because Fionna and Cake made it canon kind of. it's literally not my fault

I know the inevitable "Simon's perception of his and Betty's relationship is extremely romanticized as he remembers everything through rose tinted glasses and is very unaware of the prevailing issues their relationship had from the beginning and how his self-centered actions hurt Betty" is coming. But I'm not ready man I can't do this.
