The dangers of rock salt
Rock salt is commonly used as a deicing agent, on roads, driveways and sidewalks. The same qualities that help the salt break through the ice makes it deadly for your lawn. In addition to harming your existing lawn, rock salt can keep grass from growing for years. The salt prevents moisture from getting to the plant causing it to dehydrate making it turn brown and wither. It also prevents nutrients from getting to the grass plant.
Tips to Prevent Damage
- Clean away snow from the edges so less salt is needed.
- Use alternative deicing agents that are plant friendly.
- Use less rock salt around the edges of the areas that run off into the soil.
If rock salt damages your lawn and plants there are ways to correct he damage. One way is to apply a gypsum application to help pull the salt out of the soil. For information on this treatment call Rich Green Lawns today!
Enjoy your snow day!

Lawn Watering Tips!!
If your lawn is in full sun it could need up to 1 hour of watering per zone.
Allowing your lawn to dry in between watering reduces diseases.
Brown grass does not turn green, it needs to grow out. (Approximately 2 lawn cuttings) Improve watering will produce new growth.
The best time to water is 12:00 midnight to 8:00a.m.
Midday watering can waste water due to excessive evaporation.
During summer months it’s a good idea to water the day before you mow to minimize the browning.
Your lawn should receive roughly ¼ inch per watering and 1 inch of water per week during the hottest, driest months.
Not enough water can actually harm your lawn causing the roots to grow close to the surface making the grass susceptible to drought and freeze injury.
The key to effective watering is to give your lawn enough moisture to reach the deep roots of the grass plants!

A few tips to Help your Lawn Survive a Heat Wave
About one inch of water per week is required to maintain a healthy lawn.
The best time to water your lawn is during the cool part of the day to minimize water lost to evaporation. Early morning hours (4 a.m. to 8 a.m.) are the best and the peak water consumption hours (4 p.m. to 9 p.m.) should be avoided.
Watering at night is not recommended because if the lawn stays wet for a long period of time it can promote diseases and affect the health of your lawn. (But note its always more beneficial to water then not to water during these very hot days.)
Mow grass to a height of 3 inches or highest setting. Taller grass shades the roots and soil surface, which helps reduce the amount of water that is lost to evaporation.
Try to avoid cutting your lawn during the hottest parts of the day.

Will the rain storm affect my recent lawn care application?
No, the rain is very beneficial to the health of your lawn. Your lawn acts just like a filter. By properly treating your lawn & landscape, we are thickening it up so any irrigation that passes through it cleanses itself. Many years of studies at leading turf universities have been done to document this. The thicker your lawn is, the better it filters out contaminants. The water actually activates the fertilizer and slowly releases the nutrients into the soil for the plant to absorb.

#NotesFromTheField: Do Not Worry your Grass Is “Going to Seed”
We have been getting a lot of calls with concern of blotchy conditions to your lawn. Like every living thing the grass plant has a life cycle and it is normal for the plant to “reproduce” in the spring. A lot of grasses are producing seed right now.  As the grass produces seed it uses all of its energy on the seed so it loses its color.  Not all varieties of grass are seeding right now, which is why there is a large contrast in color between the varieties that are seeding, and those that are not.  This is what makes the lawn look spotty.  This a natural process and no amount of fertilizer will darken up grass that is seeding.  After a few lawn cuts you will start to see the conditions improve.

Why is the Fall Lawn Application Important!
Fall is an ideal time to fertilize your lawn.  There is very little shoot growth and the cooler temperatures will stimulate root activity.  In the fall the natural cycle of the grass plant is to send all of its nutrients down to the roots and store the balance for winter survival and spring shoot growth.  The supplement fall winterizing application will encourage healthy root development.
Our blended winterizing fertilizers will build a stronger; deeper root system this fall and an improved lawn next spring.
