老人ホーム、太鼓、紙芝居

続いては、目黒にある老人ホームに行きました。着いたら、最初にスタッフの一人が老人ホームについて説明してくださいましたが、敬語を使いすぎて少し分かりにくかったです。でも、その時授業で敬語を習ったばかりなので、いい練習になりました！その後、お年寄りと色々なアクティビティしてあげました。「YMCA」と「贈る言葉」という有名な日本語の歌を歌ったり、会話したり、おいしいたこやきを作ったりしました。楽しかったです！

Next, we went to a nursing home in Meguro. When we arrived, at first one of the staff members gave us an explanation about the nursing home, but since he used way too much keigo (Japanese honorific language), it was a bit hard to understand. However, since everyone had just learned keigo in class in the past few days, it was definitely good practice! After that, we did various activities with the members of the nursing home. We sang famous Japanese songs like “YMCA” and “Okuru kotoba,” engaged in conversation, and made some delicious takoyaki. It was really fun!

翌週、浅草に行って太鼓という日本の伝統楽器を体験できました！先生が教えてくださったのは、昔梅雨じゃない時に雨を呼び出すための叩き方でした。（その日出ようとしたら大雨降っているのに気がついたから、結局効いたみたいです）一時間の間に皆さんはかなりできるようになりました！その後、太鼓の先生は一人で演奏してくださいました。私達は本当にすごかったと思いました。

The next week, we went to Asakusa and got to try out playing a Taiko drum, a traditional Japanese instrument. The routine that the teacher taught us was something that people a long time supposedly did during the dry season to summon rain (and on the day we went, after we finished and tried to leave we noticed it was pouring rain, so it seemed like it worked). In just one hour, we all became able to do the (semi-long) routine with almost no mistakes! After that, the teacher himself performed for us - it was quite amazing.

今週、私達は目黒駅の近くにある保育園に行きました。午前中、子供と遊んで、「ダックダックグース」という英語のゲームを教えてあげました。昼ご飯の後で、子供の前に紙芝居という日本語のストーリーテリングの仕方を声に出して読んであげました。その前に紙芝居の話を英語に訳しておいたから、日本語でも英語でも読んであげました。全ての子供は楽しそうな顔をしていました！

This week, we went to a daycare center near Meguro station. In the morning, we played with the kids and taught them the English game “duck, duck, goose!” After lunch, we read kamishibai (a form of Japanese storytelling) aloud to the kids. In the days leading up to then we had prepared an English translation of the kamishibai stories, so we read the story aloud in both Japanese and English. All the kids seemed like they enjoyed it!

さあ、ライスインジャパンが終わるまで数日しかありません！最後まで思い切り楽しんで頑張ります！

And with that, well, there’s only a few days left of Rice in Japan now! We’ll keep working hard and fully enjoy the program until the end!

お誕生日、昭和大学、能

お久しぶりです！ライス・イン・ジャパンの���強と旅行と新しい体験で忙しかったので、投稿するのが遅れました。何をしていたのか今共有します！

Hello, it’s been a while! We were busy with studying, travelling, and other new experiences, so this upload has become quite late. We’ll share what we have been up to the whole time.

5月30日は学生のシャンさんのお誕生日なんだって、サプライズパーティをしました。ヒューストンの「うち」と言うレストランから頂いた奨学金で焼き芋やケーキや色々なお菓子を買って皆で食べました。その上、長沼スクールの先生たちは上の素晴らしい紙を作ってくださって、その紙の上にお菓子を載せました。

May 30th was the birthday of Shanさん, one of the students in the program, so we held a surprise birthday party for her. We bought snacks including baked sweet potato and cake through the generous gift of Houston’s “Uchi” Japanese restaurant. Moreover, the teachers at Naganuma School made the wonderful sheets of paper as shown above. We put the snacks on top of those papers.

次の日、昭和大学の小学校に見学しました。そこで先生たちから小学生の日常生活を見せてくださいました。一人のライス大学生は小学生たちから「かっこいい！」と呼ばれて、私達が皆笑いました。

The next day, we went to Showa Women’s University’s elementary school. The teachers of the school graciously showed us the everyday life of elementary school kids. One of us was called “Handsome!” by the elementary school kids, so all of us laughed.

後では、昭和大学生と一緒に昼ご飯を食べてゲームをやりました。ご飯を食べながら昭和学生と話しが出来て、楽しい時間になりました。その後は昭和大学の授業に入って、自分が思ういい先生とは何の先生か話して発表する時間がありました。同じぐらいの年の日本人に会えるいい経験になりました。

After that, we had lunch with students from Showa Women’s University. We were able to talk with them while eating and so had a fun time. Afterwards we joined a class held at Showa and shared what each of us thought was the qualities of a good teacher. It was great to be able to talk with Japanese students who were around the same age as us.

次の週、能と言う日本の昔からの仮面劇のワークショップに行きました。最初は神社で一人の学生がライス大学を代表してお祈りしました。その後、能の俳優がどうやって歩くのか、何を着るのかなどを教えてくださいました。学生たちは皆歩いたり面をかぶったりして、能の体験ができました。

The next week, we went to a workshop on Noh, a traditional masked theatre. At first, one of us became a representative and prayed at the Shinto temple for us. Afterwards we learned how Noh actors walk on stage and what they wear. All of us walked in the prescribed manner and wore the masks too, which was a new experience for us.

築地市場と🗼

先週は築地市場と東京タワー🗼に行きました。築地市場は大きい市場で、毎日大量の魚が売られています。周りには寿司屋さんとか漬物さんとか色々な種類の食べ物のお店がありました。

Last week we went to Tsukiji Fish Market and Tokyo Tower! Since Tsukiji is a very big market, every day incredible amounts of fish are sold. Around the area you can find people selling sushi, Japanese pickled vegetables, and so many other types of food.

自分で昼ご飯とデザートを探して楽しみました。上は回転寿司という食堂で、グルグル回る寿司を選んで食べる所です。お皿のデザインや色によって値段が違います。下はソフトと言うアイスクリームで、日本で人気があります。

We looked around, searching for lunch and dessert on our own. Above is a picture of kaitenzushi, a type of restaurant where you can choose the sushi you would like to eat from a conveyor belt that goes around the whole place. The price of each dish differs depending on the design or color of each plate. Below is a picture of ice cream called sofuto (from “soft cream” ice cream), which is popular in Japan.

その後、東京タワーへ移動しました。333m(1091ft)で観光客に人気がある電波塔である。上に登っている間に、エレベーターから息をむような眺めが見られました。上に着いたら、私達はいくつもの写真を撮りました。普段富士山が見えますが、少し曇っていたので、見えませんでした。でも、上の写真では東京スカイツリーという東京のほかの高い建物が見えます！

After that, we traveled over to Tokyo Tower, which stands 333m (1091ft) tall and is popular among tourists. While riding to the top, we saw some breathtaking views from the elevator. Once we arrived at the top, we took a bunch of pictures. Usually you can see Mt. Fuji, but since it was cloudy, we weren’t able to see it. But in the above picture you can still see Tokyo Skytree (one of Tokyo’s other popular high-rise buildings) in the distance!

ルックダウンウィンドウから見た東京タワーは怖くて面白かったです。この時、私は高所恐怖症が少し出てしまいましたが、他の学生たちは写真を何枚も撮って楽しみました。

The Tokyo Tower as seen from the “look down window” was scary and fun at the same time. I felt a fear of heights, but other students enjoyed the experience and took lots of pictures.

そして、プログラムの一週目に比べて、皆さんは元気です。時々きついですが、日本語がだんだん話せるようになっていますよ！

And compared to the first week of the program, everyone’s a bit more energetic (ie no more jet lag). Sometimes things get a little tough, but bit by bit our Japanese speaking skills are improving!

秋葉原と池袋

私達は金曜日に授業がありませんでした！その代わりに、秋葉原と池袋防災館に行きました！秋葉原（省略すると「秋葉」になります）というのは、多くの「オタク」というアニメが大好きな人がいるので有名な街です。いくつものメイド喫茶やロボットレストランみたいなところがあるので、本当にユニークな街です。そして、電気屋が多くて秋葉原も「電気街」と呼ばれます。

On Friday, we didn’t have class! Instead, we went to Akihabara and the Ikebukuro Fire Station and Live Safety Learning Center. Akihabara (sometimes shortened to Akiba) is a town famous for having a lot of “otakus,” which are people who love anime to a very high degree. Akihabara is truly a unique place - you’ll find very interesting things like maid cafes and robot restaurants scattered throughout. And due to the high amount of electric appliance stores, Akihabara is also called the “Electric Town.”

まずは、私達は神田明神という秋葉原の近くにある神社を訪れました。祈ったり、面白い写真を撮ったり、ソフトクリームを買ったりしました。

First, we visited Kanda Myojin, which is a shrine near Akihabara. There we took fun pictures, prayed at the shrine, and ate some soft cream.

秋葉原で自由に少し探検して、上野駅から近いバイキングで昼ご飯を食べました。色々種類のお肉が自分で焼けるし、お汁とご飯やお寿司やたこ焼きがあるし、そばやうどんが作られるし、美味しい物がいくつか食べられました。

After exploring Akihabara for a little while, we went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant close to Ueno station. We could cook different types of meat, had soup, rice, sushi, takoyaki and other foods to choose from, and could make soba or udon on our own. It was nice to be able to eat various delicious foods.

昼ご飯を食べてから、池袋防災館に行きました。そこで、消火器の使い方を習ったり、火事が起こったらどうしたらいいかについて話したり、地震シミュレーターで地震体験できたりしました。ちょっと怖かったですが、たくさん習うことができました。

After eating lunch, we headed to the Ikebukuro Fire Station and Live Safety Learning Center. There, we learned how to use fire extinguishers, discussed what we should do if there’s a fire, and even experienced an earthquake through an earthquake simulator. It was a little scary, but we were able to learn a lot!

一週間目がもう終わりました。学生たちは東京の生活に慣れていて、勉強しながら体験したい事を探しています。楽しみしましょう！

The first week has already passed. The students are becoming accustomed to Tokyo life, and while they study hard they are also searching for new experiences. Let’s look forward to what they will do next!

始まった！

5月15日からライス・イン・ジャパンが始まりました！！最初の日、皆さんは時差ボケがひどかったです。午前1時に起きた人なんかいました…

We’ve officially started Rice in Japan as of May 15th! On the first day, everyone had some pretty bad jet lag (some of us waking up as early as 1am)...

最初に長沼スクールに着いた時、長沼スクールの先生たちが学校を案内していただけました。教室やカフェやラウンジがどこにあるか、どこで何をしてもいいか説明していただけました。

The first time we arrived at Naganuma School, the teachers at Naganuma School showed us around. They showed us where the classroom, cafe, lounge, and other rooms were, and what we can do in each of those places.

それから、長沼スタッフは和食店で昼ご飯をごちそうしてくださいました。とても美味しかったですよ！

After that, the Naganuma School staff treated us all to lunch at a Japanese restaurant! It was super delicious!

長沼スクールは渋谷駅の近くにあります。スクランブルと言う有名な交差点やハチ公という犬の像がある所なんです。毎日通学の途中でここを通り過ぎます。

The Naganuma School is close to Shibuya Station, home to the famous “scramble intersection” as well as the Hachiko dog statue. Every day on the way to class, we pass by this!

東京の生活が始まったままですが、皆は新しい事をもう体験しています。これから頑張っていきます！

Though our Tokyo life has just started, everyone is already experiencing various new things. We will try our best during our time here!

RIJ 2018とは？

ライス・イン・ジャパンは、ライス大学の日本語の二年生の学生たちが夏休みに六週間東京で日本語を勉強することです。日本語だけで話したり、ホームステイで日本の生活を体験したり、月曜日から金曜日まで毎日日本語の授業を取ったり、日本人のランゲージパートナーと話したりします。

今年は十二人の二年生と二人の四年生とライス大学の先生が行きます。5月15日から6月25日まで渋谷の長沼スクールで勉強します。

さあ、これから日本に行きましょう！楽しみしています！

Rice in Japan is a 6-week language immersion program in Tokyo that Rice University’s second-year Japanese students participate in. Students speak only in Japanese, experience Japanese daily life through living with a homestay family, take Japanese classes every day from Monday through Friday, and practice Japanese with Japanese language partners.

This year, 12 second-year Japanese students, 2 fourth-year Japanese students, and Rice’s Japanese 先生(sensei = teacher) are going on the program. We will be studying at Shibuya’s Naganuma School from 5/15 to 6/25.

And with that, we’re off to Japan! We’re looking forward to the experience!
