Book by Ismail Kadare. A classic, I must say. I started reading this book yesterday, and I'm already hooked. Although the book is not originally written in English, rather it's translated from Albanian but it proves to be an interesting read. Here is the summary of the book: When the construction of a bridge built to link Balkans to Europe is repeatedly and mysteriously sabotaged, and old ballad starts making rounds at local taverns. The bards sing of a legend- a woman immured in a castle wall to prevent it from falling. Some say the bridge is being damaged by local ferrymen, others blame the vengeful water spirits. But this is a town where terror and superstition reign and a solution must be reached. The charm of Jhumpa Lahiri's writing is that she blends the lives of Indians in the West so effortlessly that the story never gets boring. 'Unaccustomed Earth' is a collection of stories of 2nd generation Indians making and remaking lives, love, relationships and lost identities. How funny it is, you begin to read a book but you finish reading an other. I read Jane Eyre for the first time, and I have to admit that I did not expect the book to be that good ; that it could keep me glued to it and I wouldfinish it in one and a half days. But here I am, pleased with what I read. Stories with complex female leads are extremely riveting. All those who haven't read this book , please do for here you will meet a different kind of heroine. She's not beautiful but she is principled; she has been wrong but bears everything with patience and perseverance. And the best part, that even in that time she broke class barriers and went on to an equal footing with the man that she loved.
