I am a Dragon

When I am young

I come clambering

into my parents room

screaming, “I am a dragon!”

They laugh and smile,

they think I have an overactive imagination,

they do not understand.

When I am young but slightly older

I run around the playground

flapping my arms up and down, crying out

“I am a dragon!”

My friends laugh and join in,

they think it is just a game,

they do not understand.

When still young but older

I stare at drawings of dragons

endlessly searching for the one

that in my heart I know is me,

“I am a dragon..”

I think helplessly.

my bullies think I’m weird,

they do not understand.

When I am older

a pandemic sweeps through the world

and I spend more time online than ever,

there I find people like me

those who cry to the world

“I am a dragon!”

with no shame

they are like me

they understand.

I am a dragon,

with powerful wings

and hot fire.

I am a dragon

and so are they,

I understand them,

and they understand me.

i always see posts that are like "i should have wings and claws" but where's the love for all the other dragon parts? i want spines and horns and scales. i need to be able to tear a pillow apart with my teeth. i need to curl up and wrap my tail around me.
