Saddened to hear the passing of the great Patrick Demarchelier. Beyond just an admirer of his work he was a stylistic influence as well. Studio seamless work is challenging in its insatiable need for expression. Without an environment to interact with the burden falls on model and photographer to create personality, expression and drama. Patrick’s studio work was masterful. His use of single large soft light modifiers was inspired and the tonality in the processing was magical. Born near Paris in 1943, Patrick left for New York in 1975 to begin a long career for almost every major publication in the @condenast family. His early influence in fashion photography was from his work with Henri Cartier-Bresson, another influence of mine. In 2007 Patrick was awarded the L’ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government. Finally getting a chance to post this editorial published in @elysia.magazine featuring Rachelle Denison. In the middle of a pandemic last year Rachelle was brave enough to indulge my restlessness. 🙏 She has one of those timeless faces and a genuinely beautiful spirit. I haven’t posted on here in a while. Mostly bc this platform has such mixed emotions for me, especially coming from the fashion world. It started as a photo sharing site and quickly became a place to share work in an effort to gain attention. Doing creatives is really rewarding and the process is truly the best part. Posting on here, especially in recent years, seems almost childish now. Once, trying to gain new followers and likes, now seems even insulting. I’ve noticed some of the tier A level players don’t use the platform as much. They will post periodically but mostly an exercise in keeping the account active. The influencer market has gone elsewhere and IG is just the ugly cousin with too many ads and throttled content to make room for reels. So why post this? Bc Rachelle and Patrick at Elysia deserve props and for the few people this will reach I’m happy to sing their praises. As for getting attention in the fashion industry? That horse bolted the barn. Having thousands of followers, real or fake, holds as much clout as a membership card to Dollarama. Like others I will look for other ways to navigate the fashion photography world. Photographing this city over the past weeks has been an emotional experience. While exciting to immersive myself in the relative calm of the streets, the desolation is also eerie at times.
