JOANA SCHNEIDER - OTHERWORLDLY Joana Schneider creates spacious installations and sculptural environments that intertwine themes from natural and fictional realms. Her work initiates a dialogue concerning nature, the human body and the profound impact of early childhood experiences on young adults. By creating fantastic environments, that reference non-human and human-made worlds, Schneider explores how these elements shape humans' perceptions of beauty and youth. https://www.joanaschneider.nl/about

Popular
IVAM Valencia feb 2024
What is “popular”? Popular is not fame or celebrity. Popular is not the products of mass culture. Popular is not pop. Popular is not the art of the people, nor the identity of the country, nor the symbols of the nation. The popular is not the product of the proletariat or the craftsmanship of the working classes. The popular is not folklore. The popular is not clichés or tourist souvenirs. The popular is not visual candy, one-euro merchandise, advertising royalties. Popular is somewhere in-between all of that, underneath all that, yet something different. popular is an exhibition and an investigation – showing is a form of knowledge – that aims to answer this question.
The popular is a form of imagination, often words, images and things, created through gestures, actions and celebrations, in many different ways. The popular has a performative, plastic, shifting nature, always metamorphosing, closer to ritual than monument, liturgy devoid of theology.

Diana Markosian
Santa Barbara Exhibition | Fotografiska Stockholm
17 MARCH 2023 - 27 AUGUST 2023
Photographer and filmmaker Diana Markosian explores the nature of family and the American dream. At the age of 7, the family abandoned their life in Moscow for California, leaving behind Markosian’s father. Inspired by the soap opera, Santa Barbara, Markosian creates her own world through a series of staged photographs and a narrative video, reconsidering her family history from her mother’s perspective and coming to terms with the profound sacrifices her mother made to become an American. The exhibition Santa Barbara will be shown at Fotografiska Stockholm from March 17 to August 27.

Ulay - S’he
In the early period of his artistic activity (1968–1976) ULAY undertook a thematic search for understandings of the notions of identity and the body on both the personal and communal levels, mainly through series of aphorisms, Polaroid photographs, and intimate performances. He introduced the term “performative photography”. “As soon as I began using the Polaroid camera, mainly pointing it at myself – a practice I called Auto-Polaroid – I immediately discovered its performative elements. Taking Polaroids was a performative act for me: I performed in front of the camera. These were intimate actions, carried out in the absence of a live audience, ephemeral in nature, yet arrested in time through the Polaroid.”[3] Taking hundreds of self-portraits, each manipulated in a myriad of ways (f. e. S’he, Soliloquy, White Mask, Elf, Traumatic Fears from the Renais sense series, cca 1972–75), ULAY developed an approach that was novel in both method and subject matter, using the camera as a tool to investigate and modify identity, whilst exploring socially constructed issues of gender. “ It is impossible to talk about Ulay without talking about Polaroid. Vice versa, it is not possible to talk about Polaroid without referring to the work of Ulay either."[4]

Iris van Herpen ~ Shift Souls
On January 21st, 2019, Iris van Herpen presented her latest Haute Couture collection, titled 'Shift Souls' at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The collection was inspired by early examples of celestial cartography and its representations of mythological and astrological chimera, Van Herpen was particularly taken with "Harmonia Macrocosmica," a star atlas by the German-Dutch cartographer Andreas Cellarius, published in 1600. With the advances in DNA engineering and the first successful creations of human/anima hybrids called 'Cybrids', the mythological dreams of Humankind since the dawn of civilization are shifting to the canvas of science. While the scientific and ethical implications of 'Cybrids' are still unclear, this collection expresses the fact that this reality is upon us. "For 'Shift Souls' I looked at the evolution of the human shape, its idealization through time and the hybridization of the female forms within mythology. Specially the imagination and the fluidity within identity change in Japanese mythology gave me the inspiration to explore the deeper meaning of identity and how immaterial and mutable it can become within the current coalescence of our digital bodies” — Iris van Herpen Runway video by Blitzkickers
