Chapter 16: Panic! at the Painting

The rest of the tour was a wash to Jake. He would have, in fact, been better served by going and taking a nap and a refresh to his mental state. He moved from room to room without really seeing any of it, focusing instead on keeping his breathing even and regular and pretending that everything was fine, at least for the sake of Azrael in the Celestial Realm who could do nothing but worry.

That’s a bit how he was feeling at the moment, too. He didn’t know where Nia was or what was going on with her, and all he really had left to him was the ability to worry way too much about it.

Jake knew that his reactions to things were off. Too subdued, too quiet. This was more how he was in his private space, or just around Nia and her family, or just his mom. How he was when he was trying to hide the fact that he even existed from his father.

Raphael had left his side when the tour restarted, having been called away by Michael to talk about something. Jake didn’t want to be anywhere near Michael right now so he didn’t follow Raphael, no matter how much he didn’t want to be on his own. Jake in no way trusted Michael, and especially not when he was feeling this vulnerable.

Eventually, Raphael started to make his way back to Jake, slowly ending up closer and closer to him as they moved through rooms.  He was hovering, though Jake was less aware of that fact and more simply aware that his Raphael was with him again.  He had to shake off that thought, of course. Raphael wasn’t his and couldn’t be, but that didn’t stop the wishful thinking.

-Character B doesn’t realize the danger until character A puts out his or her arm -Character A isn’t the larger or stronger character but still takes responsibility for character B’s safety -Character A doesn’t stand a chance against the danger -Character A continues talking like there isn’t anything wrong while standing between character B and the threat -Character A doesn’t get along with character B and/or vice versa -The danger is comically minor -Character A has seemed helpless or bumbling but is now revealing inner depths and hidden strength
