the way rick wrote jason is the pinnacle of his “i’m going to give this character a checklist of trauma to tick off for the sake of backstory and then never elaborate how this effects him in his daily life” syndrome. how do you write a character whose mother went mad trying to gain affection from the king of the gods—an endeavor that ended up uniting two entire theologies in one bloodline with kids that were explicitly banned from existing on both sides—and gave him up to be raised by literal wolves at the tender age of two, who was branded and forced into leadership at an even younger age than the protagonists of the original series, who has no memory of being anything but a child solider, and who toppled the throne of a titan he killed with his bare hands, and then write him as a living embodiment of the 🙂 emoji?

thinking about how even gay rights just. aren’t taken seriously by your average well meaning liberal. i’m thinking about how coworkers a few jobs ago just chuckled when i said i didn’t want chicfila bc of their donations to anti gay efforts. more recently, a trans girl who works at my gym told me that her bosses wouldn’t let her hang a pride flag in the gym. This is despite it being a place that is largely queer and a strongly ‘liberal’ soace, because “conservatives go here too.” At what point do certain ideas become unacceptable? at what point do we stop having conversations about queer rights because yes we all know gay people deserve rights? “conservatives come here too!” okay and you’re okay with that? you want that? there’s people who will be made uncomfortable by something as simple as a pride flag and you’re okay with that? you’re accommodating it? have some fucking conviction! do the minimum!

in general i think fans are allergic to men caring about women beyond them being an evil ex-girlfriend or a mother or a sister or a quirky wingman which is. frusterating. sometimes a man in a story has an interesting complex compelling relationship with a woman or they have a unique strong bond with one another but because fans don't view women as autonomous beings with internality and complex relationships she gets watered down to being one of like five stock archetypes.

some more interesting elements in The Jedi Path:

in regards to the 9 Marks it is Anakin/Vader who we see in on-screen text use the more merciful and Jedi-approved manner of combat towards both Luke and Dooku, and Obi-wan who uses two forbidden (& dark-sided) marks on Vader and Maul.
