if you have a chronically ill person/someone with chronic pain in your life, sometimes the best thing for you to do is just sit with them and watch a movie. understand that they are in a lot of pain, and there isn't much you can do but be with them, bring them snacks, and let them know that you care

this shouldn’t have to be said but if someone who struggles with cognitive issues due to things such as fibro fog, autism or adhd etc has difficulty speaking or getting their point across, do not point it out. im talking about stuttering, misremembering words and definitions, using the wrong words in place of other ones, mixing up words or merging them together. you are allowed to help us find the right word but wait for us to ask first and give us a chance to find it ourselves. blurting out random words causes a lot more confusion for us and we often end up losing our train of thought.

also, in a similar vein, we may pause to think about what we’re going to say next, and it’s important that you not interrupt. for me, my train of thought is already on the verge of derailing. if i stop talking mid-sentence, give me a second to find my words and sort out my jumbled mess of a brain. don’t start speaking like we’ve finished our sentence and please don’t just abandon the conversation. it’s very frustrating, especially when you make jokes or tease us for forgetting words or misspeaking and it makes it much harder for us to get to our point. and tbh it’s embarrassing and it sucks because our brains aren’t doing what we want or need them to do and we don’t need a reminder every time it happens.

like the jokes might seem harmless or lighthearted but it hurts nonetheless because we are constantly in a struggle against our own brains. it seems like it should be such an obvious thing, not to tease or make fun of someone with cognitive issues, but so many people do it, including some of you who don’t think you do— particularly if you don’t think the reason behind it is a disability. it’s not the same as joking about your friend making a typo in the group chat. those are minor slip-ups and they happen to everyone. for a lot of us, they’re constant. we’re almost always trying to get our brains to work with us rather than against us and pointing it out only makes it that much harder to concentrate on actually articulating our thoughts instead of focusing purely on avoiding misspeaking so you won’t point it out again. obviously this will vary from person to person, not everyone with these symptoms feels the same way i do, but i think it’s a good rule of thumb to just. not interrupt and/or draw unnecessary/unwanted attention to our speech problems. i don’t think it’s too much to ask.

Il Queens Museum of Art, o più comunemente chiamato Queens Museum, si trova a Flushing Meadows- Corona Park (NY).

L’edificio fu costruito nel 1939 per la New York World’s Fair e successivamente, dal 1946 al 1950, ha ospitato l’Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite. Il museo fu poi fondato nel 1972 ed ha al suo interno l’esposizione permanente del Panorama of the City of New York: modello in scala dei 5 boroughs della città.

Il museo è molto conosciuto per le esibizioni di arte contemporanea che riflettono la diversità del borough dov’è collocato. La sua missione è di offrire ai cittadini delle zone metropolitane della città, in particolare del Queens, esibizioni artistiche, programmi pubblici ed esperienze educative che tendono ad avvicinare le persone all’arte.

Il museo offre una vasta collezione di oggetti provenienti dalla New York World’s Fair e recentemente sono pervenuti lavori di Salvador Dalí, Mark Dion, fotografie di Andrew Moore, fotografie di scene del crimine dall’archivio del Daily News dagli anni ‘20 agli anni ’60, e un migliaio di disegni del reporter di corte e vignettista politico William Sharp.

L’installazione più conosciuta del museo è il Panorama of the City of New York, commissionato da Robert Moose nel 1934, è la celebrazione in scala delle infrastrutture della City, grande circa 868 m2 , conta 895000 strutture. Fu costruito in 3 anni da un team di 100 persone che lavoravano per il modellista Raymond Lester. Il team ha aggiornato la mappa del panorama nel 1967, 1968 e 1969 fino al 1992. Nel 2009 è stato aggiornato ulteriormente, ma ad oggi le originali torri gemelle del World Trade Center sono ancora presenti anche se al loro posto ci sono nuovi edifici. L’edificio più recente ad essere stato aggiunto è il nuovo Citi Field stadium dei New York Mets. I visitatori possono camminare su rampe e aree pedonali costruite lungo tutto il perimetro del panorama, alcune sovrastano la mappa ma hanno i pavimenti in vetro così da permettere di osservare i modelli sottostanti.

Potrete riconoscere il Panorama perché è presente in una pellicola cinematografica del 2011: Capodanno a NY di Garry Marshall. A me è capitato, non avevo idea che fosse il posto del film, ma una volta dentro l’ho riconosciuto subito e vi sentirete un po’ come Michelle Pfeiffer che esprime il desiderio di fare il giro di tutta NY in un solo giorno e Zac Efron la porta al museo e spunta uno dei desideri dalla lista. (NB. Zac Efron purtroppo non è incluso nel tour del museo)

[…] Il problema è che Harvard è la migliore […] Princeton parla del Big Three … Yale parla di Yale – Harvard, ma tutto ciò di cui si parla ad Harvard è Harvard.”

Queste le parole pronunciate candidamente da uno studente di Harvard prima della gara del 1979, con la quale Harvard rovinò una stagione perfetta per Yale.

La rivalità Harvard-Yale si rinnova ogni anno con The Game, una partita al College di Football americano tra la squadra Harvard Crimson dell’Università di Harvard e la Yale Bulldogs di Yale University. Con The Game si conclude la stagione per entrambi i programmi, di solito il Sabato pomeriggio prima del Ringraziamento.

Tutti abbiamo sentito parlare almeno una volta dell’annuale incontro/scontro fra le squadre di football di Harvard e Yale, abbiamo visto film, seguito il match in tv, fatto anche il tifo forse e qualcuno magari aveva proprio –Andare al The Game– sulla lista delle cose da fare nella vita. Bhe, io ero una di quelle e mai e poi mai avrei creduto che la prima vera esperienza americana per me sarebbe stata il The Game.

Il 19 Novembre 2016, grazie alle magnifiche persone con cui ho il piacere di vivere e di condividere la mia avventura in America ho partecipato alla storica partita Harvard vs Yale.

Sono arrivata a Cambridge in mattinata e subito ho potuto percepire il senso di appartenenza delle persone che mi camminavano accanto. Non era la scena di un film, era la mia vita. C’erano ragazzi e ragazze con maglioncini, felpe e sciarpe con il logo della loro università e non lo fanno per moda, lo fanno perché ci credono; hanno un’ideale e lo seguono.

Ero lì con indosso una maglietta di Harvard regalatami da un’amica qualche anno fa dopo il suo viaggio a Boston. Abbiamo fatto un brunch e l’atmosfera era magnifica, intorno a me gruppi di studenti sorridenti in attesa del Game.

Dopo il brunch ci siamo incamminati verso lo stadio e ho avuto così l’opportunità di ammirare i panorami di Cambridge. Era una bella giornata, fredda, ma con un cielo limpido e azzurro. Più ci avvicinavamo allo stadio e più mi emozionavo, stava per succedere, ero con persone che hanno studiato ad Harvard e di lì a poco avrei assistito alla storica partita Harvard-Yale.

Dopo essere entrati nello stadio e aver trovato i nostri posti io avevo proprio l’espressione di chi non capisce niente di ciò che le sta succedendo intorno; e non parlo dell’inglese, ma bensì dello sport in generale. Per fortuna avevo un gruppo di ex studenti ben informati e ferrati sull’argomento che non si sono risparmiati dal pormi domande sul mio paese e mi hanno spiegato ogni regola del gioco –Look, kid. It’s a simple game!-, nozioni che alla fine della partita ho ovviamente rimosso e continuo a non capire nulla di football americano.

    La partita è stata bella, un’esperienza incredibile; anche se non sai con esattezza per chi vuoi fare il tifo in ogni caso tutte le persone, i colori, i suoni e le immagini ti fanno sentire parte di qualcosa di incredibilmente meraviglioso.

The problem is that Harvard is the best […] Princeton talks about the Big Three…Yale talks about Yale – Harvard, but all Harvard talks about is Harvard.”

These are the words spoken candidly by a Harvard student before the 1979 race, won by Harvard, ruining a perfect season for Yale football.

The Harvard-Yale rivalry is renewed every year with The Game, a game between the American Football Team Harvard Crimson of Harvard University and Yale Bulldogs of Yale University. The contest concludes the season for both programs, usually on Saturday afternoon before Thanksgiving.

We have all heard at least once about the annual meeting/clash between the football teams of Harvard and Yale, we have seen movies, we atched the match on tv, maybe we cheered and maybe someone jut had –Go to the The Game– on the list of things to do in life. Well, I was one of those and never, ever would have believed that the first real American experience for me would have been The Game. November 19- 2016, thanks to the wonderful people with whom I have the pleasure to live and to share my adventure in America, I attended the historic game Harvard vs. Yale.

We arrived in Cambridge in the morning and right away I could feel the sense of belonging of the people who were walking beside me. It was not a scene from a movie, it was my life. There were boys and girls with sweaters, sweatshirts and scarves with the logo of their universities and they don’t do it for fashion, they do it because they believe in it; they have an ideal and they follow it.

After brunch we walked to the stadium and I had such an opportunity to admire the views of Cambridge. It was a beautiful day, cold, but with a clear blue sky. The closer we got to the stadium the more I was excited, I was there with people who have studied in Harvard and I was going to attend the Harvard-Yale historic game.

After entering the stadium and have found our seats I had just the look of someone who does not understand anything of what is going on around; and I do not speak about English, but rather the sport in general. Luckily I had a group of former students knowledgeable and versed on the sport whom made questions about my country and then they explained to me all the rules of the game –Look, kid. It’s a simple game! -, notions that at the end of the game I obviously removed and I still do not understand anything about football.

The game was beautiful, an incredible experience; even if you do not know exactly for those do you want to cheer, in any case all the people, the colors, the sounds and the images they make you feel part of something incredibly wonderful.
