Idk how much you know about dogs but does dilution affect red like it does in cats? Does that cause the difference in like, a red golden retriever vs a light yellow one?

They have a melanophilin mutation, but unlike in cats (and rabbits and several other animals), that one doesn't dilute pheomelanin, only eumelanin. Blue tan dogs can have the same dark red tan parts as black tans.

Interestingly, merle (PMEL), a pattern that can be desribed as "irregular dilution", is also restricted to eumelanin. Red (both full ee recessive red and the red parts of an agouti pattern, like tan or sable) hides merle.

However dogs have something called the "intensity locus", which is actually several different pheomelanin intensity genes lumped together. Three of them are identified: KITLG, GPR22 and MFSD12. These were found in different breeds, so i'm not sure how much they interact and in what ways, but still: this paints a very polygenic picture.

In this paper, the authors used five loci to explain over 70% of variation in coat pheomelanin intensity. (The five loci fall into the regions of respectively MC1R, MFSD12, KITLG, TYR (or nearby) and SLC26A4.) Retrievers were one of the breeds where they reported high red intensity correlation with these genes: "[...] Golden Retrievers and Yellow Labrador retrievers, which display nearly the full range of coat pheomelanin intensity variation and for which our model is highly predictive".

someone does not have to like, enjoy, want to participate in, create art about, hear about, witness, etc any kind of sex or porn. full stop. that includes how aces write the best smut or hand out water bottles at the orgy or whatever else. no one, asexual or otherwise, has to participate or enjoy or be interested in sex or porn.

please fight for, defend, champion, and uplift sex and sexual content. please. i will continue to do so as well. but at the same time, do not start demanding certain levels of participation in or enjoyment of this content from people. someone being sex repulsed or disinterested or not wanting to hear about sex or write or see smut is not indicative of them being part of the problem, or a red flag, or a conservative puritan. the right to say no is just as important as it ever was, including to sex in a fictional or in an artistically depicted context.

I’m gonna talk about the Fuegian dog.

The Fuegian “dog” is the third, forgotten type of domesticated canid, behind the domestic dog and domesticated red foxes. For you see, the Fuegian dog was domesticated from the culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus). They’re good dogs, Brent:

The Fuegian dog was domesticated by the people of Tierra del Fuego (reports differ regarding whether it was the Yaghan or the Selk’nam people who domesticated them. Could have been both). According to accounts, they would have looked more or less like what you’d expect from a domesticated culpeo: roughly coyote-sized and long-snouted, with pointy upright ears and a long fluffy tail. One report even claims they had webbed feet. Reported colorations range from tawny to gray to white, with patches of black, tan, or white. It apparently barked.

European colonizers did not think highly of the dogs. A French captain in 1883 described it as “ugly […] it looks quite like the fox”. They were noted to be important to Fuegian peoples. Some European reports claim they were affectionate and protective of their masters; others claim they were not particularly loyal when their masters were in danger. They were noted to be used for warmth and hunting otters, and I bet there were more uses the Europeans didn’t notice or write down.

At some point between 1895 and 1919, they were exterminated because the Europeans were scared of them-I mean, “they were a threat to men and cattle”. This would be shortly followed by a genocide of the indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego. There are surviving photos of Selk’nam with dogs, but to me they look more like introduced European dogs.

As of today, only two stuffed specimens of the Fuegian dog remain. Because of this, visiting Punta Arenas and seeing one in person is on my bucket list.

I know it’s perfectly normal and common, but the intense sadness and loneliness I’ve seen other people go through because they haven’t found “the one” yet and are doubting if they ever will is incredibly depressing. And it gets no less depressing seeing videos of “wow I finally found them and my life is so much more amazing now.” Maybe we shouldn’t be pinning all our hopes and dreams and sense of purpose and life fulfillment on another mortal person? But try and survive in any culture without encountering that mindset and having it drilled into your subconscious.

I just realized that the pink nose of a white/white spotted cat is different from the pink nose of a red cat. The red cats have slightly darker, more orange-tinted noses. Probably kind of obvious but I thought it was cute.

Yes, that's true! And when a red cat has a little white spotting around its nose, you can even see the difference:

in order to unlearn racism u have to be willing to accept that u are racist. it’s not a bad thing to want to change for the better. it’s not a bad thing to say hey, the way i’ve been acting is racist and i don’t want to be racist anymore. when people of color are telling u ways in which u have been racist, it’s actually not cool to brush it off and say, well i didn’t mean it that way.. u actually have to make an effort to stop doing those things if u want to be able to actually say ur anti-racist. u can’t just say ur not racist because u don’t wanna be seen as racist. that’s not how unlearning racism works.
