December Prompts~
Day One
“On the fifth day of christmas
my true love sent to me
Five gold rings”
Rings have a wide range of meanings. Standing for the status of wealth or power. To an eternal or long lasting relationship, whether that’s it’s just a platonic or romantic one.
For the first day of carat week, you must generate a work of art or writing inspired by the definition above.
*Deadline: 12.21.17 {10 PST}
Day Two
“On the seventh day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
Seven Swans a Swimming”
In England, Swans are royal birds.
In European fairy tales, they symbolize chastity, artistry, and beauty, fidelity, loyalty in marriage, and monogamy.
In ancient Greece, sacred to Aphrodite, they represented beauty and grace. At a person’s death, it was even believed to sing beautifully.
Make any combination of these concepts, or just one, of a swan’s symbolism to incorporate in your piece.
*Deadline: 12.22.17 {10PST}
Day Three
“On the ninth day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
Nine Ladies Dancing”
The origins of dance are unknown but they can be traced to the beginnings of human life. Dance has been associated with social happenings, rituals (both secular and religious), performances, as well as a form of expression or pleasure.
Be able to include one of these interpretations of dance in your third day’s work.
*Deadline: 12.23.17 {10 PST}
Day Four
“On the tenth day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
Ten Lords a Leaping”
In England today, there are still people who still hold the coveted title of a “lord.” This coveted title is earned by simply being born out of loyalty or someone of a similar higher ranking. These people hold an air of refinement but seeing as how these lords are leaping, there is a hint of recklessness and adventure.
For this prompt, infuse the elegance and rashness of the lyrics into your piece.
*Deadline: 12.24.17 {10 PST}
Day Five
“On the twelfth day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
Twelve Drummers Drumming”
Drums have been said to represent the joy of life, when played in a steady beat it can mirror the thumping of a heart. For others, drums symbolize the start of a ritual and awakening of spirits. Some even refer back to the quote “march to the beat of your own drum,” meaning that one gets to make their own destiny.
For this last prompt, include one of these meanings for a drum beat into your work.
*Deadline: 12.25.17 {10 PST}
*1: Deadlines are subject to change (backwards 1-2 days).
