did another screenshot redraw, had a lot of fun with this one! I wasn't gonna bother with the clouds too much since I know I can't make them look that realistic but I like the style this turned out in!

Anyone who's experienced 358/2 days ever if you haven't played the ds version in some form (emulator, ds, watching a playthrough, etc.) I highly encourage it!

Long story short I'm playing through it with a friend and playing the HD remake cutscenes side by side for comparison, and we are both becoming very critical of it.

We're only an hour or so in and already the writing is so much.. weirder in the remake. The writing is less subtle "today you're one of us" changes to "you could say today is where it all begins for you." The writing can even subtly change character motivations "If I had a heard, could I be somebody?" To "if I had a heart, I could exist" or something along those lines. It's all incredibly strange and makes me wonder if it was retranslated poorly or if it was genuinely just rewritten in a way that makes it.. kind of worse, honestly.

People already dislike the HD remake for how cut up it is and excludes certain scenes and context and whatnot, but when you examine them side by side.. even if it wasn't cut up, the writing would still be worse. It's very interesting, I want to start writing down the differences the further I get, I'll probably post about it maybe.

A bit of info about what I post/reblog

i make original art sometimes but art block has been really tough so unfortunately i don't have a lot to post lately :(

besides that I'll usually make either rambling or analysis posts on whatever subject I'm posting about, usually fandom related. occasionally theories but that depends on if what I'm posting about really leaves room for theorizing.

I try to reblog mostly kingdom hearts related posts here, so this blog will probably be pretty organized towards that?

if i reblog other people's art or analysis I usually try to leave my thoughts in the tags, but sometimes I have a hard time thinking of what to say so sorry if I reblog your work and don't say anything/don't seem enthusiastic about it, if I reblog something it's because I adore it lol, I just don't always know how to put thoughts into words. <3

and as a side note, while I do try to check blogs of people I reblog in case it's a terf or whatever, sometimes you never know, so if I do reblog something from someone who's done something shitty don't hesitate to let me know with an ask or something because chances are I probably don't know lol.

Boundaries stuff I guess.

I know DNI lists are annoying and pointless but whatever, if there's a chance it'll get people to leave me alone it's worth it. I shouldn't need to list obvious ones like terfs, transphobes, homophobes, all those assholes. But also, if you don't like one of my posts, I'd rather you block me and move on than hate reblog it. It's immature and annoying, and I won't hesitate to block people that do it.

Obviously I don't just mean "if you criticize something I post you're bad," I'm alright with criticism as long as it's respectful, but if you're gonna reblog just to say "look at this idiot" then fuck off.

Sorry about how aggressive that may have been but I don't wanna deal with stuff like that. I've dealt with it in the past and it sucks, if you don't like me, that's perfectly fine, but just block me and move on. Onto a more positive topic.. Yeah, this is a sideblog I made to try to organize myself a bit more, my main is just @roxtron if you're curious, I post/reblog non-fandom posts a lot more casually on there although any fandom-related content I post/reblog somehow ended up being fnaf-centered lol. As of making this post I only recently made this sideblog so I'm probably gonna be reblogging my old kh-related posts from my main and tagging them on this blog before I post new stuff here. So if anything looks off it's because I copy-pasted the majority of my pinned post from my main lol, that's why it might be weird to see "you can use my art for pfps" if i haven't posted any art here yet, it's because I've posted art there!

reblogging this now that i have a sideblog for kh posts but i wanna add something i forgot to mention the first time- One of the biggest pieces of evidence I had for this theory that I somehow completely forgot about while typing, the fact that the only two characters we see able to steal keyblades are Yozora and MoM. Obviously MoM has seemingly existed for far longer and has plenty of knowledge within this series, it makes way more sense to me that MoM taught him how to do that than for Yozora to just coincidentally know how to do that on his own. Plus with MoM being introduced as a mentor to the other wielders, and with Yozora being told to "Save Sora" when entering this realm, it makes a lot of sense to me that MoM would be the one to fill that mentor role for Yozora too and to be the one telling him what to do.

soo now that I'm getting back into KH I'm thinking about the KH4 trailer again, and specifically these two.

It's just so interesting to me that they wouldn't reveal their identities. Like, most people assume it's Luxu and MoM, so if it was, what's the harm in stating the obvious? While it could be those two, I have to wonder if their identities were hidden for a different reason, a connection between those two and Yozora. What if he's one of the two cloaked figures? I dunno if I'm the first person to say this, probably not, but with the way Yozora talked about his past in Re:Mind I feel like they have to be connected in some way. I feel like either Luxu or MoM was manipulating him to do whatever 'trials' he went through. That, and being told to "Save Sora" is a really interesting instruction for him to be given if it was connected to MoM. While there's no solid confirmation Sora and MoM are either connected or one in the same, there's definitely been quite a bit of evidence pointing towards it. Whether they're the same person or not, him taking an interest in Sora is still pretty.. well, interesting to think about, lol. I guess I don't have as much to say as I thought I would, considering the little scraps we've been given there's not a lot to go off of.. but I feel like it's pretty likely Yozora is working with them, whether he'll end up an ally or an enemy is still a bit confusing, but I feel like when we see him again he'll probably be with one of those two. It'll also be interesting to see which, if any other characters, make a return. At first it seemed like unique circumstances, but with the official art of Xehanort showing what seems to be a connection to Quadratum, and if I remember correctly, interviews saying he may still be in the series even after the events of KH3, it leads me to question exactly what circumstances allow someone to end up here. Some people have questioned if Vanitas or other characters could come back, and honestly that'd be really cool, it'd be nice if Vanitas got more screentime/character development in the games, especially considering what's written about him in the books. I dunno! I initially wanted to just mention Yozora's potential connection but I guess it turned more into rambling in general about the possibilities for KH4 lol

Replaying through KH BBS again and naturally that brings me to the inevitable essay about Terra. I will forever be annoyed at people who treat him like an idiot for being manipulated by Xehanort, or literally just victim blame him and act like everything is his fault. So.. I wanted to write a bit of an analysis on who’s actually at fault here, going through notable cutscenes/reports in order to help show my points.

Starting off at the beginning of the game, we all know how it goes. Terra fails the Mark of Mastery exam, supposedly due to showing a glimpse of darkness. But I think it’s notable he never actually used darkness in that fight. Sure, you could see the particles around his arm during that cutscene, but he was able to get it to fade away before continuing to fight back. The darkness was there, but he WAS keeping it in check, he was fighting against it. He could’ve given into it to win the fight, as he does later in the game, but he didn’t. It was under control at this point, even if it emerged for a moment, he was still able to control himself.

Yet Eraqus finds this as enough of a reason to justify him failing the test, claiming he failed to keep the darkness in check. I already explained why I disagree with that idea but if you’ve played the games you’ll know Xehanort does kind of have a point about Eraqus, he’s too stuck in his belief that light is pure good and darkness is pure evil, he doesn’t understand there can be balance, shown with Riku later in the series.

Which leads me to the scene after that failure, Terra says he needs to be alone, and while he is, Xehanort shows up to talk to him about what just happened with Eraqus.

“Why, you could train with him forever, and still..”

“You’d never be a Master in his eyes.”

He directly tells him what he thinks. If there’s even a glimpse of darkness in Terra, Eraqus is never going to see him as worthy. It’s never going to be enough. Xehanort tries to keep this message more subtle here than when he repeats it later, but he’s still getting across the same point. Eraqus is wrong. I’m sure that’d give Terra some doubt of trust in him, the only other person that could reassure him he is worthy is the one talking to him now.

While there is reason to doubt him as well, Eraqus has sort of undone that. Ventus already seems cautious around Xehanort due to his past, (although I find that a bit odd, since Ventus hasn’t regained those memories yet. Maybe he just gets the sense it’s familiar? Regardless–) to my memory Aqua doesn’t seem to show any obvious signs of distrust until after Xehanort revealed his nature. I’d have to rewatch her cutscenes to be sure, but either way, Aqua and Terra don’t have the history Ventus does, they don’t have any view of Xehanort besides what Eraqus told them. And what did Eraqus tell them?

He told them Xehanort was his good friend, a guest, another Keyblade Master. It seems he’s only given the man praise, with little to no acknowledgement of what he’s really capable of. 

“Considering how we had parted ways, I expected friction– but if anything, Eraqus seemed delighted to see me again.” (There’s more to the quote but the rest isn’t relevant to my point so I’m not gonna type it out.) - Xehanort’s Report 11.

Based on this report, it seems like Eraqus may not have had much doubt about Xehanort at the time either. A lot of the cutscenes referring to Xehanort before the events of the Mark of Mastery exam seem to indicate he convinced Eraqus he’d changed. While Eraqus may have been manipulated by Xehanort as well because of this.. I don’t think it excuses the role Eraqus plays in allowing Terra to fall into the same trap. Xehanort’s probably around his 80’s-90’s at this point, depending on the timeline.

(I’d have to double check but I’m too lazy to do it as it doesn’t really matter, even if 90 is older than 80 it’s really not enough of a difference that it’d change the point I’m trying to make.)

Eraqus seems to be around the same age as Xehanort, considering they’re both in the same class during the events of Dark Road, so obviously Eraqus is an adult, and has been for a long fucking time now. He’s old enough to have learned, and it was his responsibility to warn them about Xehanort, which he failed to do. Even if he fully believed Xehanort, he knew Xehanort’s past. He could’ve said something like “yeah, this is my good old friend, he’s just here for the exam, if he tries to talk to you about darkness don’t listen to him.” lol. Okay, jokes aside though, he could’ve given a vague warning like that, he can still tell them Xehanort is untrustworthy without going through everything he’s done. But nope, he decided to tell them only good things, what a great idea. Anyway, getting back to the cutscene I was talking about before.. 

“You’re fine as you are.”

“Darkness cannot be destroyed, it can only be channeled.”

He tells Terra what helps him feel better while also furthering his own plan. That he isn’t a failure, he’s fine the way he is. That darkness within him isn’t a flaw, it’s just something he needs to learn how to control. It doesn’t seem to sink in yet, but it’s still planting the seeds for Terra to follow that thought process later down the line.

Anyway, moving forward onto someone who is DEFINITELY at fault here, Yen Sid. When Terra goes to this world, they have the following conversation. I’ve cut out a few lines of dialogue because I want to focus on specific lines. 

“I thought it best to seek the counsel of one wiser than myself.” The next lines mention Yen Sid no longer being a Keyblade Master, implying what Terra meant by this is that he trusted Yen Sid because of that title, even if it is now former. It further feeds into why Terra trusted Xehanort, he clearly looked up to other Keyblade Masters, and obviously wanted to become one. Since Terra feels the need to introduce his name here, it doesn’t seem like they’ve ever met, meaning he trusts Yen Sid solely because of that title and connection to Eraqus. If that’s enough to earn Terra’s trust, it makes sense that’d be his reasoning for trusting Xehanort too, right? 

“And, like you, he is eager to use his Keyblade to set things right.” (referring to Mickey here but the way he’s directly compared to Terra makes this line accurate to both, so I’m using it.) I don’t have too much to say about this, I just find it interesting for what it says about his character, especially the word choice.. 

And oh look, someone else who’s aware of Xehanort’s past, and what does he do? He tells Terra to look for him. What the hell. Eraqus, you could at least give some benefit of the doubt for being manipulated due to their history as friends, but what kind of excuse can you give for Yen Sid? He doesn’t seem to have been directly spoken to at all, so I doubt Xehanort manipulated him too, and even if he did, how? There doesn’t seem to be any friendly history Xehanort could exploit to get him to feel sympathy or anything like that. Like I mentioned before with Eraqus, he should’ve said something. He knows Xehanort is up to no good, and he purposefully withholds that information. And if you think I’m joking, he literally says this in the next scene after Terra leaves the room. 

“I had hoped, Xehanort, your heart would no longer lead you astray.” So he knows. He knows something’s wrong. He knows Xehanort’s history. Yet he actively chose to let everything unfold, he could’ve made some effort to prevent this, to warn Terra, and he didn’t. He just goes “damn Xehanort I can’t believe you’re still doing evil shit, that’s crazy.” to himself. Like, what?? Why would you wait until Terra leaves to say this? You’re not even gonna whisper it in front of him or anything? You didn’t find this relevant information for him to know? You see no problems with what’s happening here??? Anyway, moving on to the next scene.. Xehanort tells Terra his version of events, what he did to Ventus.  (Ugh.. Unfortunately tumblr's image limit means I have to split this into pieces, so.. Oh finally after literal months due to never having time to work on it- I finished this redraw, and honestly I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I did edit the original image's color palette for style choices because I love more dramatic lighting, but yeah I'm really happy with this, I tried to go more 'cartoony' and worry less about making things realistic, which made this a lot less stressful to work on. Probably gonna be my new background now honestly.

(Also yes, it's a screenshot from a youtube video of the cutscene. I couldn't take the screenshot myself and get a frame that good. So shhh.) Anyway overall this was really fun to do but it took me forever lmao. that's why I haven't posted art for a while, though to be fair I just kept getting distracted a lot and procrastinated towards the end. This definitely isn't the style I naturally draw in so it was really difficult for me to work with the whole semi-realistic style. Turns out my original style is insanely cartoony compared to this stuff. I'm really happy with how it turned out though! It was definitely a fun experiment. I'm thinking my next redraw is gonna be from the back so I don't have to worry about drawing the details in the face lol. (Oh also also, yes I did change her hair color a bit. In the game the screenshot/cutscene is from her hair is darker- I don't know why though?? In the original game before this her hair was a much more pastel bright blue, so I compromised and went kinda inbetween. Same with the eyes, though I kept a slight tint of the original purpley-blue.)
