Grinning at his question, Ru shrugged her shoulders slightly, tilting her head, a mischievous look in her eyes. "I don't know, Lover. You probably do owe me for something."
He leaned in closer, that smile still on his lips as a hand gently pressed against her hip and pulled her in closer. "Just dinner or is there anything else I owe you darling?"

She raised her eyebrows, and shook her head. “No, you're not.” They both knew it, but she'd gotten really good about airing the things that bothered her. “You better come home in one piece, Tony. You owe me a nice dinner.”
A longing look sparkled behind those blue eyes of his as he peered into hers, a smile curled to his lips. "Aren't I always?" He asked jokingly, knowing all too well the answer was a resounding no.

Maybe she shouldn't have called, but hey instinct told her that Tony would be able to help. "Ty has gone off the rails! He's mad, and swearing and throwing things. I locked myself in the bathroom, and called you." She didn't know how long it would be before Ty found her, but she hoped it was later. Much later.
"I've never seen him this mad, Tony." Even though she knew he had a temper, this was new. "Please come get me!"

The sound of machines whirling around him while music blared would have over taken the simple phone ring, with the exception of Friday's interruption. Tony's brows furrowed in contemplation. Ru hadn't talked to him in months, not since she decided he wasn't worth the headache.
Not that Tony blamed her. He was a headache. He knew it better than anyone. Despite the suave exterior, there was a whirlwind that often bubbled beneath the surface.
But the moment he answered, the panic in her voice brought. "Rumiko? What's going on?" he asked, trying to hide the surprise and rising panic in his own voice.

@impossibleormerelyfantastic asked for a thing
She called Tony's phone in a panic, not knowing what else to do. How could this have happened? "Tony, I need you!"
It was a rare thing for Rumiko to say, but that should have shown the urgency of the situation. Asking for help was not her forte, especially asking for Tony's help, even though she loved him as much as she did.

It had been a good long while since she’d gotten any kind of undivided attention from Tony where he wasn’t working on something, whether it was for SI, or something for his mom’s foundation, she just knew that his thoughts were usually elsewhere. It was how he operated, and she knew that. Rumiko was busy in her own ways too, she’d been planning a charity event for the women’s shelter that he operated, but she had, hopefully, been keeping that a secret from him for later. She’d been thinking about maybe taking some design classes with one of the universities, though she wasn’t sure if she was going to yet, so she’d been doodling more than anything else when she was alone. Mostly, though, she’d been avoiding the idea of having to go back to Japan, which she was sure was going to be a formal request from her father at some point. She was just waiting for it to happen. Maybe she’d been more preoccupied than she had thought.
Maybe the thought of going ‘home’ was weighing on her more than she thought it had been too. She shook it off when she heard Tony emerge from the bathroom, as she was finishing folding a dress she’d picked out for one of their dinners. “I think so?” Whatever they didn’t have they could pick up, she knew that, and she wasn’t worried because she was just excited to spend more than an hour with him. “Are you sure you’re ready?” She smirked, zipping the suitcase closed. “I don’t know if you’re actually ready for a trip abroad with me.”
rumxko:
She had been keeping family secrets, basically since she was born. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to keep another one. But this one felt more meaningful, in a way? Tony meant so much to her, and he allowed her to just be herself without worry of what the flack from her father was going to be. Rumiko appreciated that more than anything. Being herself in Japan was far from accepted. Kenjiro hated the bubbly, flirty side, and wanted her just to be the dutiful daughter, and she just couldn’t do it. The way Tony looked at her, even though she was being goofy, and the way he knew gifts and quality time were totally her love languages, it amazed her.
Her entire chest filled with joy seeing him just flop on the bed, because he wasn’t busy with something felt like a whole breath of fresh air. She could happily spend her time doing lots of other things too, but this? Undivided time with Tony was her favorite. She fluttered between the dresser and their bag, when she heard the slapping of his cheeks, and the question that followed. “Just whatever toiletries you need from the bathroom?” She had no idea what he needed from there. Clothes, or maybe a small lack thereof, was a hint that she’d like to go shopping for a little bit. Not that he’d know until they got there.
The truth was, Rumiko and Tony might have come from different worlds, but at the end of the day, their pasts weren’t so different: important families in important places with big, important expectations. That, and a penchant for rebellion and a good party. Sure, since Tony had gotten sober, he hadn’t partied nearly as much as he used to, but when he did go to a party–always one Rumiko had dragged him to–she was by his side, and most days, his good days, that was better than alcohol. It was certainly better for him. But Rumiko was also a business woman: she was clever, insightful, and she certainly didn’t need him to enjoy herself. Perhaps that was one of the things Tony liked about her most. As someone busy 25/8 himself, barely able to find a spare second to sleep, let alone enjoy himself, Rumiko’s independence and self-determination made him feel like she got it. But more importantly, Rumiko knew how to take breaks. She new how to mix pleasure into business in all the right ways–not the wrong ways he’d been practicing for most of his early life. Sometimes, Tony thought that the times he was with Rumiko were the only times he ever felt relaxed.
In the end, his toiletries filled almost an entire duffle bag. Tony’s skincare, haircare, beard-care, and everything-else-care routine was extensive, to put it lightly. But he picked up on the hint about the lack of clothes and made sure to bring more than a couple credit cards–not that he ever went anywhere without them, and luckily, his credit limit was high, dangerously high, with the way the company stocks were going at the moment. As he approached Rumiko by the bed again, he took a moment to stare out the window: don’t you dare blow up in the next twenty-four hours, he willed the world. It would be just his luck for a giant, purple alien to fall out o the sky right on a quest for world domination while he was trying to have a romantic getaway. He shook off the thought and looked at Rumiko. “Ready?”

winter rush day 23
If there was anything Rumiko loved most about all the different holidays, it was the joy that Christmas seemed to bring. Nevermind that poinsettias were in season, and they were absolutely her favorite flower ever, but all the warm smells of spices and baking, all the cooler weather allowing for the cute scarves, and beanies. All the decor and lights were their own special categories.
The holidays were the best.
She thought she'd snuck off well enough to that she could do some shopping in peace for a few hours, but it was clear she had misjudged her timing she she heard her name being called from down the street.
So much for keeping gifts secret.

There were a lot of reasons why Tony hadn’t told Rumiko he was Iron Man. There was the big one: that he didn’t want her to be targeted by anyone trying to get at him. And there was always the possibility that they’d break up, that he’d be wrong about her. He hoped it wasn’t true, he didn’t think it was true. The part of him that ever let himself be hopeful thought that even if they did break up–and he had believed it was a when, not an if, because relationships just didn’t work out for him, and sooner or later she was going to get tired of all of his same mistakes and walk away–he wanted to believe she’d still keep his secret. But there was still the third reason: that knowing the truth wasn’t just dangerous. It was hard.
There was a reason they said ignorance was bliss. Knowing meant worrying. Knowing meant imagining the worst. Knowing one day he wasn’t going to come back, no matter what he told her to the contrary. Because he was sure that was a when, too, not an if. One day, being Iron Man was going to kill him, but the way he saw it, he was already living on borrowed time. He should have died in that cave. Every breath after was a gift he’d have to give up sooner or later. Until then, the best he could do was try and make her happy. Because every second he spent with her definitely made him happy.
He fell back onto the bed, laying next to the bag he should probably be helping her pack. But the exhaustion felt like a physical weight on his chest, like all the fighting and the working–and when was the last time he’d slept?–were finally catching up to him. He hid a yawn in his arm then looked up at her. Even upside down, she was beautiful. He slapped his own cheeks a couple of times to wake himself up then got back to his feet. “Okay, what’s left?” He nudged her hip lightly with his own. “Happy usually does this part for me.” Now that he thought about it, his sometimes driver, sometimes personal trainer, sometimes assistant, now head of security, Happy Hogan, probably deserved another raise.
She had been keeping family secrets, basically since she was born. It doesn't seem like a big deal to keep another one. But this one felt more meaningful, in a way? Tony meant so much to her, and he allowed her to just be herself without worry of what the flack from her father was going to be. Rumiko appreciated that more than anything. There weren’t many things that surprised her these days, and the passing of her father wasn’t any different. She knew it was a high possibility. Rumiko knew she had to be the dutiful daughter in this case and go home. Tony would understand and join her when he could. She knew that. But sitting in the church for the company ceremony, before the traditional funeral services was still a weird thing. She knew she should be in the receiving line, and saying thank you to those of those that came to support and who expressed their grief to their family. However she hadn’t expected the handful of people that came to see the casket, head to toe in black.
She didn’t recognize them, and that wasn’t unusual, but the fact that she hadn’t recognised them at all was really what struck her as odd. Rumiko quietly watched them from her seat, and tried to listen if they were saying anything. She couldn’t tell from her seat, but they soon turned and filed out single file, and she looked back at her father’s casket, then back at them as they left the church. What had just happened?

There was a new bruise rising on his left cheek, but it was nothing a bit of foundation couldn’t hide–he’d been getting good at that lately–and though it did hurt a little to smile, he couldn’t help it when he got Rumiko’s review. “I can take that.” He had been expecting at least a seven, and that was being generous.
A quick glance at the bed and the half packed bag gave him another surge of hope. If she really didn’t believe in him, didn’t believe this could happen, that he could really follow through, she wouldn’t have bothered packing, right? He knew things weren’t great between them, but the relief of not having to lie to her anymore made everything feel more possible. Time might not be on their side, but at least there was nothing left between them, that biggest wall torn down. Of course, Tony had other walls–with commitment, with trust–but they were walls he was less aware of. As far as he knew, there was nothing he was hiding from her, no more lies he was actively keeping.
“I cleared my schedule, and the plane is ready and waiting as soon as you are. It’s a long flight. You’ll have plenty of time to yell at me at 30,000 feet.”
Rumiko was really on the fence about the whole Iron Man thing, even now that it had had time to settle in her head. It meant that he was putting its life on the line almost any time he stepped out of the house. Part of her was proud, because it was so on point for him. Taking care of people was almost ingrained in him as deeply as her defiance to the old Japanese traditions her dad tried to stick to.
Another small part of her was jealous, because he'd kept it from her for so long, but how many other people knew that he was Iron Man before she knew?
The last part of her was scared. What would happen if she lost him? Would she be able to handle the grief? Who would take over for him?
There were too many questions and she didn't have answers for any of them.
She set the flowers aside, knowing she would have to get them into a vase after she was done packing for them. She set the flowers on the bed beside the bag while she rummaged around for clothes to take. "I'd be more mad, but you literally saved lives, how could I be mad about that?
Finding out that he's somehow cleared his schedule, she was impressed. She knew Tony was good, but how he'd pulled that off in the time that he was gone, was slightly awe-inspiring. "Oh, okay! I'll pack faster then." She kissed his cheek as she flitted by, dropping a few more items in the bag.

He wanted to be serious. He wanted to see through everything he’d just offered her–but mostly, he wanted to offer it without her looking so surprised. Or so doubtful. But he also knew that apologies only meant something when there was change to follow it up, and he didn’t know how to do that. He didn’t know how to find enough time in a day to be everything he needed to be, to be everywhere at once, and sooner or later, Rumiko was going to get tired of waiting around. Sooner or later, she’d find someone who showed up when he said he would.
“I’m sorry.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead and, though it was the last thing he wanted to do, called the Iron Man armor to assemble around him and flew out the window.
Luckily, this threat didn’t take too long. Tony could have hugged the bad guy in question for allowing himself to be apprehended so quickly. He was back within an hour, landing on the roof and quickly disassembling from the armor as he hurried down the stairs and into the bedroom to find Rumiko again. He had spent most of the fight simultaneously on the phone, ducking shots to the head, while inside the armor, he working with Pepper to get everything cancelled for the week. She hadn’t been thrilled–nor had anyone whose meeting he’d pushed back–but he thought he’d managed it: seven uninterrupted days. Now, the world just needed to stay in one piece long enough for him to save his relationship.
“On a scale of 1-10, how mad are you?” Tony handed her the bouquet of flowers he’d picked up on the flight home.
She watched him leave with a quiet sigh. Was this what it would always be like? A better question was; could she handle it if it was? She had no way of knowing if he would be coming back any time he left. JARVIS, maybe…
She pondered these things while she packed a bag for them, hoping he would be able to keep his promise this time. She also wondered if he was keeping anything else from her. Iron Man had been a pretty big secret, and Rumiko had really not taken it well at first.
Either time didn't move, or she had been so caught up in her thoughts that she hadn't heard him come back. The flowers were beautiful, as always. Inhaling their beautiful scent, and smiling softly, she shrugged. "Maybe a five and a half?"
