I do not anthropomorphize my robot vacuum. I’ve tried! (I’ve also tried anthropomorphizing my various cars over the years and never once has it stuck—I come up with cute names but never use them; I don’t talk to my vehicles/appliances like they were people I could encourage to do better by motivating them even though I think strategic personal superstitions can be psychologically helpful. My anthropomorphizing instincts just seem to be limited to living creatures?) But.

My GOD I love my lil robot vacuum! MVP of the household! Not because I think it’s cute—my black cat is the handsomest creature in this house; the robot vacuum is simply sleek—or because I perceive any emotion in how it operates, but rather based on the simple fact that it does 90% of my vacuuming for me, and there are no household chores I loathe more than vacuuming.

Lil robovac, I do not assign you personhood, but I love you and how much better you make my life. Hearts hearts hearts. ❤️ I hope you never break. (Not because I would feel the same way about you breaking as I did about my previous cat abruptly going into kidney failure and having a brain-damaging stroke one heart-breaking weekend a few years back, but because you are a moderately expensive piece of equipment I value highly and wish to never live without. Please live a long and fruitful life of gathering dust, my beloved.)

I mean.... all his kids are adults living independently, so 14 or over, and he's 29. Assuming half-foot pregnancies last the same amount of time as human pregnancies, if you do the math, at least two of those pregnancies would have started before he was a legal adult.

(I hope his wife was around the same age as him, because if she was even a few years older that would imply some alarming things about their relationship!!)

this is advice I've given friends directly before and I've probably also posted it but I really like giving it so here it is potentially again: do not create something for an imaginary bad faith reader.

there will always be someone who finds fault in your work. there will be people who read the messages on it wrong. there will be people who will take every compelling aspect about your work off of it so they can put in their own.

you cannot make art for these people.

you will never write a story that is free from criticism. you will never draw a piece that everyone finds appealing. you will never compose a song that everyone enjoys hearing. you cannot, fundamentally, set out to create something and only think of how you can avoid someone not liking it.

because, and this is key, there will be someone who sees every angle of your story and feels its intent in their heart and gushes to their friends about it. you will draw someone's favorite art and they will make it their phone wallpaper because they want to see it every day. someone will fall in love with your song and loop it on their way to work because it gets them through the day. and THOSE are the people your work is for. THOSE are the people you have to care about, because they love what you make for what it is - because it's itself.

if you set out to create something and file off every sharp edge, prune every thorn, you will be left with something fragile and weak, and it will be fragile and weak for the sake of someone who does not exist but that you were scared of anyway.

sharing art is complex and tangled and powerful, and anything you care enough to create deserves to flourish as itself. get sillay.

It’s about time we have a fictional princess who actually enjoys being a princess.

She enjoys the politics. She enjoys the diplomacy. And she enjoys the balls and banquets and attention and pretty dresses and that doesn’t make her a dumb shallow bimbo or some regressive anti feminist handmaid or whatever the kids say these days about women who don’t fall in line with their Strong Female Character power fantasies.

All the princesses urging for ‘something more’ that’s all fine and good but I’m ready to see a princess who appreciates that being a princess is already a lot!
