Is she behind the flowers on the dining room table? I take a break to go bowling with Le Cousin. I dance with La Cousine. I continue looking all over the garden - but no Mamy! After a nap in Le Peugot car of la Cousine, I was awakened for my first lesson in the Art drinking Champagne! First I was given a sip of the champagne. Then, I was shown how to dip "Le Biscuit Rose de Reims" into the champagne. Les Biscuits Fossier Company originate in Reims, France in the Champagne Region. I was also taught to dip the strawberry in the champagne and enjoy that as well. Quel Aperatif! It is this region of France called "The Champagne Region" where all the true champagnes are cultivated. Nowhere else in the world can true Champagne be created! The Villages in the Champagne Region in France include: Montagne de Reims, Epernay, Cote des Blancs, and Marne Valley. Villages of Ambonnay, Avize, Ay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Bouzy, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Louvois Mailly Champagne, Oger, Oiry, Puissieulx, Sillery, Tours-sur-Marne, Verzenay, and Verzy. I was 3 1/2 years old. The husband of Mamy's Cousine Marcelle was an expert gardener. He worked very hard to create a garden of great beauty. Full of color, variety, and vibrance. It was surrounded by a stone wall with a wrought iron gate that gave the grounds a tranquil, peaceful, and intimate feeling. The house was built of brick, stone, and wood. A very beautiful country home surrounded by farms & vineyards in a French village called Verigny. It was near the medieval city of Chartres, home to the world famous Le Cathedrale de Chartres. We had many nice picnics, sunbaths, and conversations over aperatif at sunset or a cup of tea in this beautiful sanctuary. I have many fond memories of this trip. JANUARY 1961, IN GRINDELWALD, SWITZERLAND - THE HEART OF THE SWISS ALPS, MY PARENTS DREAMT OF HAVING A BABY BOY. IT WAS HERE THAT I WAS CREATED! My parents Marguerite & Russell flew over the Atlantic from New York to Zurich, Switzerland & then by Swiss National Railway - on to Grindelwald, a quaint alpine village, at the foot of the mighty mountains - Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. They shared this wonderful winter vacation with Rosmarie & Hans Ritter, close friends since first meeting in Kew Gardens, New York. They were also the first to know when my parents were engaged, and later on, they attended their wedding. Gotti ( my Mother's God Mother ) who lived nearby in Murren, Switzerland was also there. They all had a wonderful time celebrating the New Year's holiday together. They spent New Year's Eve at the mountain chalet of The President of Switzerland. The little brown friend in all the photos my mother called "Louis Armstrong". She looked at him when she dreamt of having a little boy. I turned out looking like my Mother & Father - not Louis Armstrong! My father had never skied before and was given lessons and stayed on the Bunny Hill. My Mother having grown up in Switzerland, was a great skier from childhood. She swooshed over all the trails. Each night in their hotel chalet they all enjoyed Swiss specialties. From Fondue with Grueyere to Weisswurst with Rosti (Swiss sausage & grated potatoes), and Zuger Kirsch Torte, layered with almond meringue and soaked in Kirsch. My parents took home a very important souvenir from Switzerland... On October 18, 1961, I was born in Doctor's Hospital in Manhattan, New York. 25 years later - in January 1986 - I became a dual citizen to Switzerland! I have travelled throughout Europe & Switzerland, and the World many times in my life. I am fluent in English & French Photography by Marguerite R. A MOVIE STAR, MY FILMS, MY EXHIBIT, INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL, MY WATERCOLOR MASTERPIECES Here is a Watercolor Portrait I did of my Mother Marguerite R. Fernando. My painting was based on a photoshoot of the Fernando Family in 1963; (I am the little one). During this time, Papa, Russell Allan Fernando was Art Director for L'Oreal Paris HQ in New York. He would later go on to become Art Director at Revlon & Art Director at Zotos in a very successful career the Beauty Industry. Due to my Father's position, my Mother was able to visit L'Oreal's Beauty Salon each week for a full makeover. Hair Color, Hair Cut, Make Up, Manicure & Pedicure. L'Oreal made my already beautiful Mamy into a Movie Star! The Charcoal Portrait was done by an Illustrator who worked with Papa at L'Oreal. I was so inspired by his charcoal drawing I wanted to create a brilliant watercolor version of my own to capture the charismatic essence of my Mother. Years later, during my Mother's brave fight with Parkinson's Disease, I gave her help in various areas. After I colored and styled her hair, I always told her in my heart "You now look like your Charcoal Portrait again!" My Original Artwork was showcased in an exhibit I designed and created. The exhibit was about my Mother Marguerite's life. This very exhibit was the subject of many Feature Articles from several Press Outlets. See below 3 Award Winning Feature Films I produced. Second, is the journey of my mother, Marguerite Fernando to America in 1956. Third, is my family's visit to "The 1964 World's Fair" in Flushing Meadows, New York. SITGES, SPAIN ON THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Part of the Series - EUROPE 1971 SPAIN / FRANCE/ SWITZERLAND Film in 8mm by Marguerite R. Fernando Film Scanned & Digitally Restored by Russell Paul Fernando When I was 9 years old my family took a wonderful vacation throughout Europe. This was the very beginning of the trip. We flew over the Atlantic on the first Jumbo Jet - The Pan Am Boeing 747 - from New York, USA to Lisbon, Portugal & Barcelona, Spain. We spent a week in Barcelona & Sitges Spain enjoying the sparkling Mediterranean & the warm sandy beaches, and the brilliant sun. We loved to take out the pedalos - a small recreational water craft propelled by pedaling action. A great way to navigate The Mediterranean! For shade we wore our colorful sombreros while making sand castles. We kept cool & refreshed all day long by swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Stay tuned for more in this exciting series... DEPARTING AMERICA ON THE FIRST JUMBO JET EUROPE SEPTEMBER 1971 - SPAIN, FRANCE, SWITZERLAND A Continuing Series The itinerary: Spain's Mediterranean, Paris, France's Wine Country, Basel & The Rhine, The Swiss Alps. We flew on the first Jumbo Jet, The Boeing 747 with Pan American. Twice the size of anything before it. Pan American started 747 service in January of 1970. We flew the Pan Am 747 in September 1971. The terminals could not dock the plane. How to board passengers? In New York at JFK, they used "People Movers". These buses raised the cabin through hydraulic "sizzors" that reached the terminal. Once passengers boarded, the cabin was lowered. The bus drove out to the plane. At the plane, the bus raised the cabin, aligning it to the door. Passengers boarded the plane. Seeing the plane as we drove out I was awestruck by its size. 400 passengers. 231 feet long,195 feet wingspan, 63 feet high. I was so excited to come aboard! We were delayed because the plane needed to transport an extra engine to Europe. The wing was equipped with an extra engine pod. With cabin doors open water tanks had to be emptied to counter balance weight. 4 hours later, Away we go! On the runway - the 4 engines roared with180,000 lbs thrust. The wings trembled! Within moments we lifted off the runway flying toward the North Atlantic and Europe. From the Atlantic, we first met Lisbon in Portugal. Then, after a delicious, Spanish Omlete , we touched down again in Spain. The landmark city of Barcelona, the sparkling Mediterranean, and picturesque sea village of Sitges awaited us.
