Reminder: a how-to guide is here for those of you who may be first-timers when it comes to participating in a fan event.

We've discovered that some of you are new to fan events like these, which is HUGE! We're so excited that you're interested in making Rutherfest your first, and we want to map out the basics on how to participate.

Step 1:

The first step is the most important: be a fan of Cullen, and be ready to have fun!

Step 2:

Review the Rules & Guidelines so you have a sense of what we're looking for in this event. These rules aren't meant to be restrictive: rather, they're mean to serve as a tool to make this the best experience possible for the widest range of fans.

Step 3:

Create your project! We accept art, fics, edits, gifsets, screencaps, and pretty much anything else you'd like to include to celebrate Cullen. Not sure where to start or aren't feeling confident about any of the above ideas? You can always think outside the box and create a music playlist, song, moodboard, or something else that fits your talents.

Step 4:

Tag your project with #rutherfest when you post your work! You'll want to post your work on the day of the theme/prompt it's meant to fit. That said, if you don't meet that "deadline," don't sweat it! While we obviously hope the bulk of contributions will be posted during the actual event dates, we understand that things happen and life gets busy.

Note: You must use the #rutherfest tag to ensure we'll find your work! Things get messy when the right tag isn't used, and sometimes, that can cause delay in your work getting reblogged.

Step 5:

Sit back and enjoy. The mods will reblog your work and tag it accordingly (#art, #fic, etc.).

We'll share a list of what to expect from the tagging system closer to time, but know it will be kept simple and straightforward.

Last week, we asked you what weapon Cullen carried in Dragon Age: Origins. And truthfully, we prefer to answer this with a glimpse of one of Cullen's most iconic moments in the franchise.

Note: While mods exist that keep Cullen's weapon preference consistent across games, a greatsword is what we see him with in Origins.

Answer: Cullen was thirteen years old. While he'd decided he wanted to become a templar at eight, it wasn't until he'd begged the templars at his local chantry in Honnleath and showed promise to a visiting knight-captain that he was officially recruited.

This took quite a bit of time and debate, and we wanted to provide ample opportunity for you to flex your creative muscles. As such, each day of our long weekend celebration will have TWO broad themes to choose from (with the exception of Sunday).

Whether one word strikes inspiration, one prompt, or both options per day, we encourage everyone to lean into what speaks to you most.

Cullen carries his burdens with strength, but he hasn't always had to do so alone. Every chapter of his life has shaped him into the man he is today, and we can't wait to see which of these inspires you most.

Day 2 (Saturday, August 30th): Dreams and Devotion OR Demons and Duty

Cullen's journey has not been a linear one, and his perseverance is part of what makes his character so great. Whether these terms refer to the purest intentions or the most double-edged swords, we look forward to seeing what you'll bring to the table.

Day 3 (Sunday, August 31st): Free Day!

You are the masters of this prompt. Show Cullen some love to finish out Rutherfest!

Let's be real: many of you know some of us already, but our team is excited to bring this event to you and can't wait to see what you come up with!

First up, the admin: Tay

What Admin Tay is most excited about when it comes to Rutherfest: I'm looking forward to seeing people come together and create something incredible for a character they're passionate about. I'm a newer fan by Dragon Age standards, always dancing around the franchise but never fully diving in until last year. As such, I had an unconventional introduction and journey towards loving Cullen's character, and I wouldn't have it any other way. This is a talented fanbase, and I'm excited to be a part of it.

Our team is committed to making this a fun, festive, and positive experience for all fans of Cullen. I'm really looking forward to seeing where all participants' efforts lead!

Tay's favorite thing about Cullen: I deeply appreciate seeing someone who has a good soul and heart pull themselves out of the abyss. He fully owns up to his mistakes. He owns up to his flaws, and he never uses them as an excuse. Instead, he perseveres, putting in reflective, authentic work to be a become a better version of himself. I love and value his sweetness, that hint of shyness when he's flustered, and his ability to make hard decisions. It's not a responsibility he takes lightly. Self-awareness is talked about often, but rarely put into reflective, deliberate practice. He's a healing character to me, and as an added bonus, he's a dog dad now. What's not to love?

Jayla's favorite thing about Cullen: My favourite thing about Cullen is not only his journey of self-growth, it takes so much strength and self-awareness to admit when you were wrong like that, but I love his dry wit and humour, it’s so cutting! His personality is a brilliant mixture of kind, dorky, strong and stubborn. He’s just so well written!

What Mod D is most excited about when it comes to Rutherfest: I’m very excited to just see some Cullen positivity and works dedicated to him by those who love his character! Plus maybe having some fics to add to my “to read” list :)

D's favorite thing about Cullen: It is almost impossible to pick a single favorite thing, honestly. But if I had to summarize what I love so much about him, I’d phrase it this way: It’s his humanity. From his running away from his crush and nasal laugh to nearly losing his way and wrestling with his faith as well as everything in between. Of all the characters in Dragon Age, I find him the most relatable because of how human he is. To use his own words: I find him compelling. His amber eyes and crooked smile don’t hurt either.

Please refrain from using the #rutherfest tag for any “anti�� content towards any characters, ships, or fellow fans. We will not accept it. This event is all about celebrating what we love about Cullen, so let’s keep it positive for all.

No AI content, please. Rutherfest will celebrate human-created content and continues to respect the rights, work, and products of real writers and artists.

Any mature/explicit content must be tagged accordingly. Previews will be welcome, but we will ask that any explicit content be featured under a cut to keep our archive safer for a wider audience’s viewing. We understand that some tags tend to make posts disappear, so if you do not see your contribution during the event, please message us and let us know.
