This one's a real interesting prompt because I overthink this a lil too much - but here’s what I have for this year's KaiShin One Prompt Challenge!

Thoughts on it under the cut!

Right. Okay. I really struggled with this one. Not only in terms of time constrains (it's been a really busy time) but also because the prompt is reaallllly interesting. Like super interesting that I just jumped onto to join the event because I wanted to challenge myself (been in a slump lately and this prompt was screaming at me) and I was latching on real hard to something here:

Shinichi and Kaito look alike. So alike that Kaito has gotten mistaken as Shinichi before, and he has used it to his advantage too.

How do I use the prompt, while also remembering that they would look the same? I thought about going the crack route, as seen below:

Kaito: He is, unfortunately, very handsome ??: ... don't you guys look exactly the same? [Narcissist much?] K: oh. Right

But I wasn't up for it. I tried thinking about the idea of one of them looking like an absolute dork (affectionately), and then the line - but it kept feeling wrong to me, because I feel like that would be attractiveness. Handsome is too much of a physical word for me.

As Faith (@indelibleme) says, "this prompt is more for the "damn he's hot" type of vibe lol" - which is absolutely true.

So it's something about the physical appearance. Or at least that's what I want to focus on. But they look the same. (Kinda. You get the idea)

And then, it hit me. What if we make it so that Kaito likes Shinichi - everything from his intelligence to his appearance, and it's not because he looks like Kaito - he doesn't feel attracted to himself duh - but it's because it's how Shinichi looks. Kaito just happens to look like him. And is pining after him in the mirror.

Like. Does that even make sense? Probably. I don't know And right after that thought, I had that image of Kaito looking at the mirror and seeing Shinichi.

AND THEN THAT ONE FIC THAT POPPED UP IN MY HEAD KEPT REVOLVING IN MY HEAD WHENEVER I THINK OF THIS BECAUSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY NAILING IT I JUST HAD TO HUNT IT DOWN AGAIN yea. Here's the link to it: the only victim of these innocent crimes (is me) by dytabytes - it's an explicit fic so 18+ only and please read the tags and summary. I guess this drawing is an ode to that fic because when I went back to reread it, the premise really hit all the right spots.

Anyways, again, Kaito and Shinichi has their similarities, and they also have differences. This is just one route I went and m quite happy with what I have.

There was going to be an exposition and conclusion that used the prompt more explicitly, featuring the crack portion, before what I have - but time and energy. I am lacking of them.

Having finally taken down the Black Organization once and for all, Kaito and Shinichi embraced a new chapter in their lives. They untangled the knots of their complex feelings, and Shinichi now finds himself in a relationship with Kaito, one that has weathered through thick and thin. However, it is ultimately a long-distance one.

The detective and magician aren't able to see eachother in person often. Kid has retired the mantle as being the infamous Phantom thief and now tours around the world as a renowned performer, set upon achieving his own dreams as becoming a showman rivalling that of Toichi's greatness. Shinichi on the other hand has been constantly busy, with case after case coming into the Beika City police department. The unending stream of crimes and ruckus brought on by the winter festivities this year makes Shinichi feel as though he can never catch a break. But it's the holidays, which doesn't make things look any better for the detective's exponentially increasing workload. On the night of Christmas Eve, Shinichi is sent home early. Something about the weather, Inspector Megure tells him, but the whispers around the department tell Shinichi that suspicious things are afoot. For once in his life, Shinichi decids to not question it, and heads out for the day. Even detectives can get tired of solving mysteries. When he finally arrived home, nothing seemed to be off. But as Shinichi unlocked the door to the Kudo mansion, he felt a palpable anticipatory hush fill the air. Suddenly, the lights burst to life, revealing a cascade of confetti and the explosive crackle of firecrackers! The unexpected spectacle is all thanks to Kaito, who secretly returned home to surprise Shinichi for the holidays! Together with the rest of the Beika city police department, he schemed to finally give Shinichi the break he deserves. All of their friends and family are here for Kaito's surprise holiday party. They all—rather chaotically—cooked Christmas dinner together. It's the first meal him and Kaito have cooked together since the days of Shinichi being stuck as Conan, which makes Shinichi feel grateful for the ordinary moments they can now share without the weight of secret identities. They spend the rest of their holidays enjoying the festive activities, going out snowboarding and leisurely drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace. On Christmas morning, Kaito kisses Shinichi under the mistletoe. Ran and Yukiko tease the two for how lovey dovey they're acting. This is likely the last time they'll see each other for a very long time, so he might as well make the most of it. That was, simply put, was Shinichi's thought process. From their days as Conan and KID, from forced comradery to unexpected feelings, Shinichi can't help but feel they've come an incredibly long way. He wishes he could see Kaito more, to revel in his gaze, to hold his warm hands every waking moment of the day. It won't ever happen, he thinks, not with their busy lives, but he'll never forget the memories.

The next day, it's time for Kaito to leave. Shinichi comes to see Kaito off at the train station. He's emotional, but decides to hold it in. He doesn't want to make Kaito any sadder than he already is, so Shinichi puts on a strong face for him. But before he can leave, Kaito goes in for a massive bear hug, nearly knocking Shinichi off of his feet with how strongly he embraces him.

Call me every night, Kaito pleads into the crook of Shinichi's neck. The I'll miss you goes unspoken, but Shinichi knows it doesn't need to be said. He doesn't want to let go. There is so much he wants to do, Shinichi thinks, but for now, just this is enough.

Summary: Shinichi is on a case; that’s kind of his default state ever since he got tangled in with the Black Organisation. Kaito would like some meaningful relationships in his life, maybe even a cheesy romance, if only a certain detective would get a clue. In the midst of all this, a hunter decides to make their lives a little more difficult.

Or, in which Kaito would like to challenge the status quo, Shinichi would rather not, and an enemy from the past will not let either of them rest.

As Snake kept watch, he saw Kudo Shinichi walk around in a semi-circle, eyes flitting around. He was searching for something—or someone? At the centre of the stage, KID had managed to get his hands on the gem finally. The huge banners fluttered slightly in the wind, giving Snake another clear shot to the thief. Should he…? Or should he not?

Kaitou KID lifted the gem high above, the moonlight gently hitting the stone from the skylight above. Snake held his breath; even the police paused, recognising the old ritual even as they didn’t know its significance. And when nothing happened, Snake lifted his gun again—

“KID!” Kudo Shinichi yelled across the room. “Down!”

—and a gunshot rang in the air.

Ngl, I also had no idea how the prompt would go myself - BUT YOU DID THIS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULLY I LOVE IT (and yes to angst lmao)

I love the take that you took - the pining and love of long distance relationship. How when they meet up - it's filled with happiness; together with the knowledge that it will come to an end. That bitter-sweetness of knowing that every second and moment is precious.

You really captured it really well in both the drawings and the writing!! LOOK AT HOW SOFT THEY ARE! Their smiles and hugs are everything ;;;;

And the train scene is gorgeous - absolutely GORGEOUS. IT LOOKS STRAIGHT OUT OF A MOVIE! I mean, look at all of these details! YOU DREW A WHOLE TRAIN STATION AND THE TRAIN?! WITH AN ACTUAL TRAIN MODEL!? Your dedication to details is always superb and something I admire a lot.

Love the use of the screentones and how you drew the bg characters - really adds flavour to the drawing and GOSH THOSE DETAILS THAT FOREGROUND POLE!

Everyone is very cute here - I love how kaito worked together with the beika police department to gift shinichi a well deserved break! And everyone came over to celebrate with them ;;

I was super excited when I saw the prompt, especially with the fluff and hurt/comfort tags because I got to use this reference from Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani; which by far has the *best* hug I've ever seen in cinema.
