RAINY DAYS IN BRINDLETON BAY [1999] #003
Tumblr media
A week passed before I finally decided to meet him.
I was so apprehensive, what if my hunch was right? What good would I do her if I died in the process of finding her? My anxiety had it's own way of holding me back, just like anyone else.
I changed my tune though, when the police said they were going to drop the case because there wasn't "enough evidence" to go forward with any kind of investigation. How much more evidence do you need? She was gone, an entire human life, missing.
I stopped letting myself grovel and booted up my cell to gave him a call. My stomach churned as I waited for the line to stop ringing.
"Hello again, beautiful." His charm leaking through the phone like an overflowing sink. For an instant he had his claws embedded in me, that voice, I could see why she was so keen on rushing out here to meet him. "Guys like this are once in a lifetime, Reggie!" She yelled through her toothy grin as she tore out of the driveway.
"Hello?" He chuckled, "Giving me a taste of my own medicine, huh? I didn't mean to scare you that bad, Reg."
Lost in my head again, I kicked myself. Letting him think we were on a nick-name basis was good, but the guilt of even speaking with this man tore through me like a knife.
"Has anyone got your attention for the night?" I yawned out, my best attempt at being enticing.
"Just you." He cooed back, better at this game than I'd ever be. "Meet me down by the lounge in a half hour. Don't stand me up, I'll be heartbroken."
Before I could protest, the receiver clicked silent in my ear. No time to get ready, and the lounge? I'd have thrown a temper tantrum, had I had the time. I rushed through my shower - first one in a week - and had just managed to throw on the cleanest smelling outfit I had as I was forced out of the door by Harrison's confidence enforced time limit.
I barely had enough time to ask myself why I had already allowed him to have such a grandiose hold on me, when my cab pulled up to the large double doored entryway, and I saw him standing there.

RAINY DAYS IN BRINDLETON BAY [1999] #002
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"HARRISON: Good evening, gorgeous. New in town?"
I stared in disbelief at the message now sitting in my inbox. My heart was in my throat. My mind racing a million miles an hour.
How could he reach out so quickly? My account hadn't been up all of twenty minutes. My anxiety did what anxiety does best. Every possible situation played out in my mind, all bad.
What if this was a group of people, not just one man? Preying on any new girl in the area? No, that wouldn't make sense. Why, then would they have taken my Lindsay? I sighed, wiping the sweat off of my brow and re-seating my hat with the palm of my hand.
"I came here to follow through." I whispered to the empty walls of my new home. In an all-but-nonchalant attempt to keep his attention, I send my phone number.
"Call me. I hate texting."
No response. Maybe I was being too impatient? I never did know how to keep a man. That's what mama always said, at least. Lindsay and I always joked that if we weren't married by 30 we'd go to the courthouse ourselves and settle down with a science baby.
"Lindsay. God, where are you?" I was never one to keep my thoughts in. I had a face that gave it all away. You always loved that about me.
I hadn't let myself cry over her, not yet. Because once you do that, you're accepting that they're gone. I know you're not gone, Lindsay. I know it. Everything in my body pushes back against me, but I will keep going. If it means finding you again, I'd do anything.
No sooner than when I finally shut my eyes, the phone rings.
With shaky hands and wide eyes, I answer.
"Hello?"
The line is silent, save for deep and slow breathing on the other end.
"Hello, Harrison?" I squeak out, my confidence waning.
Suddenly a deep voice breaks out into laughter.
"Did I scare you?" I can almost hear his smile through the phone. "Then again, you are the kind of woman who gives her telephone number out to strange men on the internet." He seems to scoff into the receiver, breaking character for just a moment.
"So. When do I get to see you?"

RAINY DAYS IN BRINDLETON BAY [1999.] #001
Tumblr media
"Of course." I mutter grumpily to myself. "Last box unpacked and it starts pouring." I was really looking forward to heading down to Whiskerman's Wharf and trying out that Chowder Lindsay told me about.
My subconscious thoughts stopped in their tracks. Lindsay. My best friend from back home. She was the whole reason I was here in Brindleton Bay, and not taking care of my farm in the countryside.
She had just come out here on her own to meet up with some guy she'd met online. Harrison. I asked her, no, begged her to let me tag along. It wasn't safe I said, with all this new E-dating stuff you just couldn't be too sure what was what.
Three hours after she was set to get back into town, I got a message from her on my blackberry. 'kllhjn ee e' Jumbled letters. Tried to call her, nothing but a dial tone. Nobody has seen her since.
I came out here a few times, asked around for that guy Harrison. Apparently nobody named Harrison lives out here. It's a pretty tight knit community, and everyone I've met gives me that same apologetic stare. "Sorry, I don't know anyone with that name. But I'll keep an eye out for your friend."
I load up a Nat Geo tape into my VHS and fall back into the couch, when suddenly I am hit with an idea. I'll make an account on that site, what was it? SimDa?
I pull out my phone and get to work creating a profile. This was my last hope for any kind of lead in his direction. As the rain pattered against my windows and thunder rolled in the distance, my brow twitched in anticipation as I waited for the matches to come in.
Not nearly as fast as I thought. Of course it was easy for Lindsay, she was stunning. She'd have gotten a date wearing a trashbag...
My self deprecating thoughts were interrupted my the 'bing!' of SimDa.
'SOMEONE WANTS TO START A CHAT WITH YOU!'
The pink letters flashed on the screen and my heart sank into my stomach, was it him? Was this all it took?
I held my breath and waited for the tiny circle to stop spinning as the page loaded.
"HARRISON: Good evening, gorgeous. New in town?"
