hello, love your art!! how did you learn to tattoo? the only thing i’ve found is this “tattoo school” that makes you pay to learn,,,

Hello! I was self taught for 6 months meaning I did tons of self research using all free sources like YouTube videos. I watched a ton of tattoo shows to get a gist of what’s difficult, what makes a good tattoo technically, and to learn about all the different styles of tattooing. I practiced on fruit and fake skin for 3 months until I practiced on myself first. Then I asked close friends and family to be volunteer canvases. (My sister worked in the medical field so she taught me sterility firsthand.)

After 6 months, I applied to an unpaid apprenticeship where I gained knowledge in exchange for labor. I learned how to clean and manage the shop and I asked a lot of questions. They taught me how to set up and break down and I learned a lot about skin depth, different machine strokes, different needle/machine brands, etc. There are pros and cons of doing apprenticeships (not all shops are made equal and some are pure abuse) but I appreciated the fact that I learned how to set up, break down, and keep sterile. Everything else had been practice practice practice.

After graduating, my second shop was a walk-in shop. I learned that there was no better way to get better than to do tons of small walk-in tattoos. Now I’m at a place where I’m mentally done with being a walk-in artist, and I prefer being appointment only and honing in on a specialized style that I excel in and enjoy.
