Comparing two interviews about that Thunderbolts ending
I’ve been having a little think based on the two interviews we’ve gotten regarding the ending of Thunderbolts. More recently, Julia Louis-Dreyfus says that the ending, where the Thunderbolts get named the “New Avengers”, had been planned years ago when she first came on for Falcon and the Winter Soldier. She adds that they always knew that this would be a controversial decision, during which she cites the ending montage of in-universe articles having mixed reactions to the announcement.
Yet we also got an earlier interview with writer Jake Schreier where he also discusses the ending. He says that he was surprised by the test audience’s reaction, they were hesitant to clap or cheer and seemed more confused by the ending. He admitted to expecting an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. The audience’s reaction led to the addition of the ending montage. So it was, according to the writer, not an intended part of the movie from the beginning.
So these two statements are clearly not lining up, they can’t both be true. This decision to make these characters the “New Avengers” was either planned to spark controversy years ago, or it was supposed to be a unanimously approved decision that turned out to be controversial so they had to slap on a montage to make it look intentional. I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus is telling the truth about this twist being planned years in advance because, while disappointing, it does follow the pattern of the MCU where they plan big moments years ahead of time. But I think overall the story is closer to Shreier’s depiction: the decision to make this team the “New Avengers” may have been planned far in advance, but everyone involved thought it wouldn’t be a controversial ending. So when it didn’t screen well, they had to scramble and add that montage in order to act like it was their intention all along for people to have a mixed response. And interviews like the one with Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a kind of preemptive damage control where she’s basically lying by saying it was the plan all along.
And I do think that damage control is the right word here. Despite the movie getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, it bombed in theaters. And this isn’t some overlooked indie project, it's a Marvel movie. It tanked at the box office for a reason, and as time goes on I think more people will come to realize that it is because the film is rife with issues. It's not a quality product, and more than that it damages long-standing characters, worldbuilding, and themes that many other writers and directors have put hard work into maintaining. This movie has alienated a good portion of the fanbase who are now having to deal with the most vile, racist harassment in recent memory.
I think that eventually there will be some in-depth criticism of this movie from a popular YouTube channel or review site. Or once it's out on streaming there will be more online criticisms from people who didn’t bother to watch it in theaters, or from people who had a good first impression in theaters but see the flaws more clearly upon rewatching. And when that happens, this more recent interview can be cited to act like this was what they wanted all along. Disney can go “Oh, well we just wanted to spark a conversation!” or some crap. But the evidence is there, the stories do not align, this was not planned from the start. This was a bad decision that threw people and characters under the bus for a creatively bankrupt idea that did not pay off.

Thing is people only think "complex characters" only apply to morally grey or evil characters. People foolishly assume that good characters can't be complex.

Unless Anthony has a contract for another 5/6 movies outside of Doomsday and Secret Wars, I find it just a little bit annoying that before the Big Event that was Infinity War and Endgame, we had two Avengers movies that allow them to expand and show them have wins.
But here, we jumped into this world clashing event that feels like a new start right at the corner and we will meet Sam’s Avengers directly in it without making them together and build anything as a team prior to that.
Okay, big surprise effect (if you manage to avoid spoilers) but this doesn’t outweighs the fact that we won’t spend a lot of time with them. Especially when you have not one but two to three whole other teams present il the movie (Thunderbolts, F4, the XMen).
Another mid stakes Avengers movie before Doomsday would have helped imo.
#this is so true#we really deserve better than like some team up montage in doomsday#i do wish we had at least a movie to setup and showcase the avengers team#sam wilson

Thank you @six2vii for the "frustrated kisses" drabble request! I went with SamDennis; sorry for making them so pathetic.
Years ago, Dennis was trained to control his emotions. Not to lash out when he was angry or annoyed. To think through the consequences before he acted. Any mistake on his part could result in death.
This was supposed to be a chill night: beers, wings, and the game.
But, if he had to listen to Sam complain about being single for one more second, he was going to scream. Or shoot something. He already felt the vein in his forehead bulge and his jaw hurt from the way it clenched for the past twenty minutes. The simple thought of wanting to shut Sam up felt like a betrayal.
Because he– listen, it was impossible to know Sam and not fall for him just a little.
“And Leila coulda been an option, but she's dating that–”
The pounding in Dennis’ head grew stronger.
“ – even if it didn't work out between us before.”
And stronger.
“Dating as The Falcon was easier, but I guess as Cap now–”
Dennis threw back the last of his beer and tossed the bottle. He grabbed Sam's shirt and leaned in. His kiss was hard and lacked the finesse he'd dreamed of kissing Sam with, but he couldn't bear the frustration anymore.
Sam pulled back with a frown.
“Dennis, what the hell?”
“What do you think, Sam?” He kept Sam's shirt in his grip and searched Sam's eyes. “I'm right here! I've been right here! I quit my job to work with you; I have your back, no matter what, and I never even glance at anyone else. Why am I not worth considering?”
Sam just stared at him in shock.
“I didn't know you were interested,” he said quietly.
Dennis scoffed and let go of Sam. He sat back in his seat and kept his eyes on the tv.
“How could you not know? You think I look at anyone else the way I look at you? Gee, you must think I'm a smiling fool then.”
He tried to stand, but Sam grabbed his arm.
“Wait! Just talk to me, please.”
“And say what? That I've been a little in love with you since we met? And I've done everything short of throwing myself at you, but you never seem to notice. But, sure, ‘no one's interested in you.’”
Anger flashed in Sam's eyes.
“You know what? Yeah, yes, you should've said something. I'm not gonna make the mistake again of confusing affection for attraction. If you wanted something with me, you should've asked.”
Dennis looked over at Sam with tears in his eyes. He pried Sam's hand off of his arm and raised it to his lips. He placed a soft kiss on his knuckles before he let go.
“I don't want something with you, Sam. I want everything.”
He stood and wiped the tears from his eyes as he walked away.
Before he made it to the front door, he heard footsteps behind him, and Sam spun him around by the shoulder. It was Sam's turn to plant a frustrated kiss on his lips. Sam held onto his face and looked Dennis in the eye.
“If you're an option, if you're saying you wanna be with me, and make me insanely happy for the foreseeable future–”
“OK, I never said–” but Sam cut him off with a quick kiss and smiled against his lips.
“You don't wanna make me happy?”
Dennis surged forward and kissed Sam, all tongue, and full of promise. He rested his forehead against Sam's, and held onto his waist.
“Of course, I wanna make you happy.”
Sam smiled that bright smile of his that could light up all the darkness in the world.
“Then stay.”
And Dennis did just that.
THE END

Drawn for the @sambuckylibrary SamBucky Summer Bingo 2025 On the Town Card - Date Night Square Fill.
I had this idea where Sam would ask Bucky to be his date for the Hellfire Gala. Pictured this moment with Bucky gushing over Sam's outfit when he arrives to pick him up, and he's just happy to wear his black leather jacket, jeans, and combat boots.

Sam Wilson is Marvels Superman. And it’s crazy that people don’t see the parallels. Like this man is my comfort character and should be the comfort character of everyone tbh.
A man who may have these crazy abilities, but his greatest strength is his humanity? His ability to see the good in people?
To help people in the quieter ways? To represent the best version of ourselves? To inspire hope and kindness to one another?
Sam Wilson holds the best attributes of us and what we can be by lending a helping hand and being there when people need him. Being reliable and only resorting to violence when absolutely necessary. He’s strong enough to take down opponents during a fight but he knows his own strength.

hi sian! i hope you’re doing well.
you’ve written my favorite kinky/bdsm related sambucky fics and i wanted to know your thoughts on something.
i’ve recently been fascinated by the concept of dom drop and wanted to know your opinions on how this could apply to sambucky? like who would be most likely to drop, how would they proceed. would it forever change their sexual relationship?
Hey. Thanks for this, and for the patience. I had to take some time to really think about this answer because it’s important to me. I wanted to say thank you for the support and readership of my SamBucky works that explore BDSM and kink. While it’s part of my life, I don’t share it in writing as much as I’d like to, so to know you’ve enjoyed my few offerings means a lot to me.
While I have written a few works, the ones that stand out to me where we would have one of the characters having Dom Drop are Afraid and Not Afraid. If you haven’t read them, please check them out. The reason I chose them is because the other SamBucky fics I wrote with kink or D/s dynamics were negotiated between the pair – which is of the utmost importance to BDSM. Afraid and Not Afraid are pre-BDSM for SamBucky. There’s still a lot that’s gone unsaid between them, even though they love being intimate with one another and their experiences are quite intense.
In saying that, Bucky is a natural Dom for me. Firstly, because he exudes power without even trying to. Secondly, because in the context of him surviving HYDRA, Bucky finds it difficult not being in control, and that extends to the bedroom. He’s been under the control of others for so long he is not willing to give that up.
As for Sam, he spends so much of his life leading others, making decisions, and carrying the weight of responsibility. What he needs is to relinquish his power in a safe place with someone he trusts completely.
This is their dynamic for me. It’s the D/s in the BDSM. Dominance and submission. It suits their needs when being intimate. As a Dom, Bucky takes care of Sam and his needs. He takes on the responsibility for Sam’s pleasure while they’re engaged in D/s play. Sam gets to be soft and vulnerable with Bucky. He gets to be needy and slutty. He gets to beg for what he wants. And it’s seemingly all in Bucky’s hands. That can be a lot of responsibility for anyone, Doms included. That can lead to being overwhelmed by the nature of the scene and the intense emotions involved. I see Bucky experiencing Dom Drop in instances of D/s play between himself and Sam.
Like I began to examine in Afraid and Not Afraid, there is the aspect of Bucky being powerful. Not just in the sense of most natural Doms feel the need to constantly present as strong and powerful (another thing that leads to Dom Drop), but he is physically much stronger than Sam. They figure out together that Sam likes rough sex. He likes chasing that thrill of his body being pushed to its limits. And Bucky wants to give Sam what he wants, but he’s still worried about:
The risk to Sam
Navigating the way that BDSM is viewed by those who don’t understand or live the lifestyle because BDSM is very much viewed as a deviation from what’s ‘normal’.
While both of these factors can bring any Dom to worry about risk, I feel it’s heightened for Bucky. Sure, his dominant, confident personality pre-war was there, but this need to be in control if new for him. Finding a partner who is a thrill-seeker like Sam, someone who enjoys the physicality of rough play, brings new experiences and emotions for Bucky to contend with.
I see him firstly worried about pushing Sam too far. Worried about hurting Sam. Worried about causing Sam serious harm. Worried about losing control and doing something that both he and Sam can’t come back from.
Then I see his worry present in another way. Where he’s worried that Sam’s only wanting Bucky to be rough and forceful because that’s how Bucky is. Because who as a Dom has never wondered secretly: Am I the type of person only capable of causing pain? Why would I want to hurt someone I really, truly care about? What if I’m a bad person? Would they want me if I wasn’t like this?
Let’s be real, BDSM is still seen as a perversion and practitioners are seen as deviants in this day and age. Bucky would have to learn a whole new lexicon and deal with a whole new part of his and Sam’s sexual expression that’s seen widely as a perversion. He would have experience in the 1930s and 1940s with his queerness being viewed as perversion. So, there’s a whole bunch of learning and unlearning that Bucky has to undertake. He’s safe with Sam, and Sam is safe with him. The negotiation and communication of it all is what they have to maintain.
I see Bucky having Dom Drop after a particularly physically intense scene with Sam. He might end up having self-doubt or be triggered by something else like a flashback of a memory. Just like aftercare is important for a sub, it’s also important for a Dom. I see SamBucky being respectful, nurturing, and attentive with one another. After Bucky has a drop, I see him and Sam taking a nice long bath together. Sam washing Bucky’s hair; Bucky massaging sweet almond oil into Sam’s hair. The pair of them lying together and cuddling, staring into one another’s eyes and not saying a word. Bucky kissing Sam softly over all of his bruises. I see them being physically intimate in a softer, gentler way. Holding one another. Reassuring one another. Appreciating and thanking one another.
For SamBucky, I feel like Bucky experiencing Dom Drop would bring them closer because of how open their communications needs to be in the aftermath of a scene. Sam would notice the change in Bucky, and he would encourage him to talk about what he’s feeling. I see them working through the overwhelming emotions and supporting one another. See, Bucky is a protector. He would be consumed with emotions surrounding keeping Sam safe. Remember that one scene in TFATWS where Walker asks Bucky if he can live with having Sam’s blood on his hands, and it rattles him? That wasn’t about Bucky concerned about carrying the weight of blame; the tears in his eyes proved that. He was worried about Sam being hurt. Now, Sam is quite comfortable in asking Bucky what’s going on in his head. If he saw concern and worry on Bucky’s face, he’d ask about it. They’re in tune with one another, that’s what makes them a good team.
Anyway, I’ve said a lot here. I hope I got my point across lol
Again, thank you for this Ask. I enjoyed thinking about this for our beloveds.
P.S. This image gives me all kinds of ideas for a SamBucky BDSM scene
