LORETTA’S WOES - Script for Adv. Visual Storytelling

INT. OXENDINE FAMILY HOME - DAY LORETTA OXENDINE, 55, petite, with long raven black hair well past her backside, stands at her kitchen sinking staring out the window. A jar of pennies sits in the sill in front of her. LORETTA I’m at my wits end, Lord. Loretta bows her head and places her hands to her head. LORETTA (CONT’D) We’re out of everything, ain’t no food, no money. I just don’t know what to do. Loretta begins to sniffle as she starts to cry. Loretta wipes her eyes and bends over to lift up a plastic bag of bottles that lays beside her feet. LORETTA (CONT’D) Ouch! Loretta yelps as her hair gets caught on the kitchen counter. MICHAEL OXENDINE, 35, tall, with braided shoulder-length black hair, walks into the kitchen and the door SLAMS behind him. MICHAEL Ma? Where you at? Michael stands in the kitchen doorway and gasps seeing his mom on the floor. Michael leans down and extends his arm to help his mom up. LORETTA Oh, wait, my hair’s caught! Loretta yelps and waves her free hand at Michael. Michael fishes his mother’s hair off a caught nail. MICHAEL You caught it on a nail, ma. Loretta nods and stands up. LORETTA That really needs to be fixed but money’s been tight, you know. Loretta lifts the bag of bottles and reaches for the pennies. LORETTA (CONT’D) I called you out here to take me to cash in these coins and cans. Loretta takes a deep breath. LORETTA (CONT’D) And to take me to town so I can sell my hair. Michael’s eyes widen. MICHAEL But, ma your hair is a cultural staple of the res. You can’t sell it. Loretta looks at Michael and nods. LORETTA A mother’s gotta do what she’s gotts do for her family, son. Michael sighs and nods. MICHAEL Alright, ma. I’ll take you into town. THE END

Mastery Journal - Adaptation Experience

Transmedia Storytelling and Media Convergence are a regular staple and considerably some of the steps needed to build a productive franchise. As we see from the examples here Eragon, the book, originally written by Christopher Paolini has expanded to become a video game, has a complete motion picture soundtrack, and has also been a successful fantasy film. Though the story began as a children’s novel the success of the story was so widely loved that in time production companies saw the tangibility for success if this modern fantasy story was allowed to evolve beyond being ‘just a book.’ By 2006, Eragon was showing in theaters and the large-scale expansion of media into music, film and gaming exploded from there.

Another example of a successful franchise that has expanded across various types of media is The Matrix. The Matrix could arguably be one of the first major storylines to expand beyond one medium and into others with historical success, likely because of the fact that it was highly futuristic and an incredible example of sci-fi in the past 20 years. I think that The Matrix is a concept that people feel drawn to and because of how much society continues to advance in technology, the story is one we feel we can relate to because of the unknown mystery surrounding how technology can both assist and hinder our lives.

My third and final example of media convergence and transmedia storytelling comes from what was first a film called Pitch Black. The film portrayed a group of people stuck on a planet that was literally pitch black and had monsters crawling all around the barren wasteland trying to consume the people who had crash landed on their planet. Nobody else was capable of seeing but one particularly intriguing character who had eyes that appeared like liquid silver and who had a great knack for kicking major butt across the universe he called home; Riddick. From Riddick’s success in pitch black the creators were able to expand into creating what is now known as The Chronicles of Riddick, which has been both a live action film and had followup animated films, comics and video games all based off the character of Riddick.

This image is a infographic release with 3D paperback and ereader examples of the book cover for Forbidden Fantasies by Sai Marie Johnson. Infographics are great ways to share the cover and generate hype for a new release or a preorder which as evidenced in this image, which was used for the two week preorder campaign that I ran for Forbidden Fantasies from 10/19/2017 until it released on Halloween.

This image is a self-made book teaser. It is the first teaser in a set of six that goes along with the story, the book cover, and the color schemes chosen for marketing Forbidden Fantasies as a new release to the public.

Three Examples of Effective Branding #1: Videos/Trailers or Previews.

The video example used here is the most current book trailer created by my freelance company, InfinityxCreations. This book trailer is a short introduction that includes visual aids as a way to engage an audience’s interest in my new book. Videos of less than two minutes are recommended because they are easy to download and quick to watch, which allows the viewer the opportunity to maximize their time and learn the most they can about the product without having to spend too many minutes reading. I have noted, as have many other authors, that book trailers definitely do increase invisibility and engagement with an audience and find that creating a simple and quality book trailer is something most authors are seeking to aid in expanding their brands.
