Thanks
Hello seven! I am writing a 'Holmes family next generation' fic. Yeah the same Sherlock/Shruti verse. And, while of course I'll search the net â Do you have a Brit Pick post on the "British Education System" ? It'll be really helpful. Thanks beforehand. đ¤
LOTS of Britpicks on the British education system. Search in my blog under #britpicking and then #english schools, english school system.
I have done a whole series of Britpicks on the English education system, starting with Primary School, Secondary School, and University, both undergraduate and graduate.
Primary schools can be found by searching my blog for #British schools and #English School system for fanfic writers
It may be necessary to do these without the capital letter at the start of the hashtag- sometimes Tumblr does it automatically in lower case, and I didn't realise that.
Secondary schools can be found by searching in my blog for #english school system and #English Education System
University education can be found by searching in my blog for #British universities and #University in Britain. If you are keen on Oxford or Cambridge, you can search on #oxbridge, #oxford university and #cambridge university.
Unfortunately, consistency in hashtags is NOT something I have been very good at doing (SORRY!)
I apologise that my blog posts are not easily searchable for two different hashtags (blame Tumblr?). I have often used #britpick and #britpickiing interchangeably because when I first started doing these, I had no idea I would be doing so many!
This question and another one on English sports made me realise that I might want to use PDFs to put these into Ao3 where multiple hashtag searching is easier. The only challenge there is dealing with so many images (I'm not great at embedding things in Ao3)!
I hope this helps!

Hello, readers.
The idea for this chapter hit me the moment I spotted a bottle of lidocaine topical spray in a very posh pharmacy. Right there on the label: âPlay longer. Have more fun.â Naturally, my writer brain screamed, âOh, thereâs a story here.â
A little Googling later (for science, of course), and this suggestive, slightly unhinged, and thoroughly fun chapter was born.
Hope you enjoy the ride â pun absolutely intended.
"Elementary, My Dear... Oh.â
Rain slapped the windows like a percussionist on a deadline. London noon was as dreary and soaked as a teabag at the bottom of a pint. Inside 221B Baker Street, the mood was anything but.
Shruti stood in the doorway of the bedroom in an oversized shirt that most definitely wasn't hers. Her dark hair was damp from the rain, and her grin was criminal.
Sherlock glanced up from his violin, brow arching. âWhy are you smiling like that? You only smile like that when somethingâs about to explode or I've left a burner on.â
âOh, I have something explosive,â she said, sauntering in and tossing a small silver can onto the bed.
Sherlock squinted at it. âIs thatââ
âTopical lidocaine spray. For... scientific enhancement.â
He blinked. âIsnât that a mild anesthetic?â
âExactly,â she purred. âToday we play for endurance.â
Sherlockâs eyes narrowed, calculating. âInteresting. A timed experiment?â
Shruti was already tugging off her shirt. âMore than five minutes. I want you focused, Sherlock. I want data.â
Shruti straddled Sherlock, holding the little silver spray like it was a sacred relic.
âI donât know if I should be aroused or medically concerned,â he muttered.
âToo late,â she said, eyes trailing down to where he was already very much on board. âNow hold still. This is for...

I'm so frustrated being forced to read cell biology to pass the exam, that I wrote this. It's not complete, but a glimpse from my WIP fic.
---
14 year old Shelley Roy Holmes sat hunched on the drawing room floor, wild curls in both fists, her textbook splayed open like a crime scene victim. Her fingers tugged at her scalp dramatically as she cried out to no one in particular, âI hate biology! Hate it with every cellânucleus, cytoplasm, nucleoplasmâwhatever else is floating inside us like jellyfish!â
She flung a pencil across the room. âWhy are there so many -plasms?! This is not knowledge. This is punishment. Dry, crusty facts with no emotion! No story! No plot twist! Just⌠organelles.â
One of the house staff passed by the open door and, with a knowing sigh, alerted Sherlock.
Moments later, Sherlock strode in, coat swishing like a cape even though they were indoors. He paused at the doorway, surveying the scene: notes scattered, one highlighter chewed to death, and Shelley threatening the textbook with a glue stick.
His brows rose, unimpressed. âI cannot believe my daughterâmy daughterâdoesnât enjoy basic biology.â
Shelley dropped the book to her lap and rolled her eyes with dramatic flair. âDad Sherlock, I love artsâgive me politics, history, revolutions, even a good parliamentary debate. But not this!! Not this cytoplasmic soup of terms!â
Sherlock walked over, picked up the pencil, and placed it delicately back on the table. âYouâre saying the study of life itselfâmicroscopic, intricate, elegantâbores you?â
âYes!â she wailed. âItâs like learning the wiring of a toaster when Iâd rather be overthrowing the government that made the toaster policies!â
Sherlock looked skyward for strength. âMycroft would have a stroke hearing that.â
Shelley snorted. âGood. Maybe then heâll stop forwarding me biology flashcards on WhatsApp.â
Sherlock shook his head, but he was smiling now, just a little. âVery well. Would a historical analogy of how mitochondria staged a coup against the cytoplasm make it easier?â
Her eyes lit up like a revolution was beginning.
âGo on,â she said, grabbing her pen again like a sword.
---
Sherlock sat beside her, fingers steepled in thought. âAlright then. Letâs begin.â
Shelley looked doubtful. âYou're seriously going to teach me biology like a history lesson?â
Sherlock smirked. âNot history. Politics. Revolutionary politics.â
He tapped the open book. âImagine the cell as a kingdom. At its coreâliterallyâis the nucleus, the monarch. It holds all the important documentsâDNA, the constitution, the royal decrees. Everything needed to govern.â
Shelley tilted her head. âSo the nucleus is the ruling class?â
âExactly. But the nucleus doesnât run everything alone. It relies on a massive administrative systemâthe cytoplasm. Thatâs the cabinet, the ministries, the bureaucracy. It keeps things moving.â
She nodded slowly. âAlright⌠still sounds kind of boring but Iâm listening.â
âThen,â he said, voice lowering like he was delivering court gossip, âthereâs the real power playerâthe mitochondria. The revolutionary. Once an outsider. A rogue entity that bargained its way into the kingdom by promising energyâATP. Now, itâs the powerhouse. Everyone fears it. Without it, the kingdom collapses.â
Shelleyâs jaw dropped. âWait⌠the mitochondria were outsiders?â
He nodded. âEndosymbiosis theory. They used to be free-roaming prokaryotes. Independent radicals. But they struck a deal with the primitive cell. âWe give you energy, you give us protection.â A political alliance. And now they live within the cell, running half the show.â
Her eyes glittered. âThatâs insane. So itâs like a royal court with spies and exiled leaders making comebacks.â
âExactly. The ribosomes are the workersâprinting factories, churning out proteins like propaganda posters. The Golgi apparatus is your logistics ministryâpackaging, labelling, distributing materials across the cell.â
Shelley snorted. âThis is starting to sound like a cold war novel.â
âBiology often is,â Sherlock said coolly. âEach organelle has a function, a power, a political agenda. Take the lysosomesâtiny executioners. If the kingdom malfunctions, they break down rogue agents and malfunctioning parts. Internal affairs.â
âIâm actually into this now,â Shelley muttered, scribbling frantically. âWait, wait, say that part again about lysosomes being assassins.â
Sherlock leaned back, pleased. âJust remember: the cell is alive not because it's scientific, but because itâs dramatic.â
