We may have just witnessed the end of the Airbus A380 Superjumbo (BA)
Emirates
Emirates ordered 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners at the 2017 Dubai Air Show.
The airline was expected to order more Airbus A380s. Emirates is concerned that Airbus may cancel the A380 program.
“Most operators of the A380 I’ve talked to are not thrilled with the performance of the A380 given the cost,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview.
Of the 318 A380 Superjumbos that Airbus has managed to sell over the past fifteen years since it began building the massive aircraft, one airline — Emirates — has bought nearly half.
The Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based airline currently operates 100 A380s, while no other airline owns more than 19 of the massive, double-decker aircraft that can carry as many as 800 passengers on long flights.
So when Emirates Airline opened the 2017 Dubai Air Show this week with a blockbuster $15.1 billion order for 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, the decision to go with the sleeker, more efficient aircraft made by Airbus’s rival, was a massive surprise. In fact, as Bloomberg News reporters at the show in Dubai noted — Airbus was actually expecting to announce a deal a deal of that very size for the A380.
Even though Emirates Airline president Sir Tim Clark told CNBC on Monday that the company hasn’t ruled out buying more A380s in the future, the reason he gave for going with the Boeing is particularly troubling. Emirates won’t order any more A380s, he said, until Airbus can firmly commit to not canceling the Superjumbo.
Clark’s concern — that Airbus won’t keep the A380 program going — may become a self-fulfilling prophecy for Airbus.
For most other planes, Airbus could firm up its order books and bring stability to the program by fishing for sales elsewhere.
But they can’t do that with the A380. At this point, … Read More Here...

This is arguably the best audio upgrade you can make for under $100

Instagram / @_audioquest_I love music, and while it would be nice to exclusively listen to my favorite songs through a nice stereo, most of my music listening happens at my desk at work.
If you’re in the same situation, investing in a good pair of headphones should be your priority, but beyond that I recommend getting a DAC (Digital Analog Converter.)
I reviewed AudioQuest’s Dragonfly Black last August, and it hasn’t left my computer since.
Every digital audio device has a DAC inside; it’s what turns files on your phone or computer into sounds you can hear. The reason I recommend and continue to use a dedicated DAC is straightforward: It makes my music sound better.
There are lots of dubious audiophile tips and tricks to improving audio quality, and some people will never be satisfied, but using AudioQuest’s Dragonfly Black has made a difference to my ears.
It’s not a “night and day” difference like the one you’d notice when stepping up to a great pair of headphones, but it’s there. Instead, the DragonFly Black has helped me discover nuances in some of my favorite songs that I’d never heard before. As I said in my original review, I only appreciated the difference after getting used to the way music sounded through the DragonFly Black and then going back to my MacBook Air’s headphone jack.
Most audio gear is big, bulky, and expensive, which is why I tend not to recommend it to most people. I’ve had great experiences using Apogee’s Duet II and Nu-Force’s headphone amps in the past, but they require a serious monetary investment.
The DragonFly Black looks like a flash … Read More Here...

Advocacy groups sue after appeals court allows partial enforcement of Trump’s travel ban
FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/Getty Images
A federal appeals court allowed part of President Donald Trump’s travel ban to take effect.
Several advocacy groups have filed lawsuits challenging administration’s related efforts to restrict or ban certain refugees from entering the U.S.
Last month, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked most of Trump’s third travel ban just before it was due to take effect.
SEATTLE — On the same day a federal appeals court allowed part of President Donald Trump’s travel ban to take effect, advocacy groups filed a new lawsuit Monday challenging the administration’s related efforts to restrict or ban certain refugees from entering the U.S.
The developments came as lawyers on both sides of the issue are preparing for yet another round of appeals court arguments next month. They’re the latest sign that after nearly 10 months, the battle over the president’s travel restrictions — and whether they represent the “Muslim ban” he promised during his campaign or a legitimate effort to improve national security — is far from over.
“The president is making every effort to implement a campaign promise that’s un-American and unconstitutional,” said Mark Hetfield, president of the refugee support organization HIAS. “The only way to stop him is through the courts.”
Last month, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked most of Trump’s third travel ban just before it was due to take effect. A judge in Maryland separately blocked it to a lesser degree, saying that Trump could bar people from six mostly Muslim nations — Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen — as long as they did not have “bona fide” relationships with people or organizations already in the U.S.
The travel ban also applies to travelers from North Korea and to some Venezuelan government officials and their families, but the lawsuits did not challenge … Read More Here...

China may have peaked — and the world should prepare
Reuters/Jonathan Ernst
As President Trump travels through Asia this week trying to rally support against North Korea, we are missing what is an even greater challenge, something that could very well change the very nature of international politics as we perceive it.
In fact, Asia’s greatest challenge today is not a nuclear Pyongyang armed with missiles that can hit most parts of the planet, but something far more complex: a People’s Republic of China that is out of space to grow economically, and has in fact peaked. The ramifications of this fact could be profound, and indeed reorder our thinking of global politics not just in the Asia-Pacific, but on a global scale.
To be fair, a few years ago, I would have argued that anyone who uttered such a phrase was completely nuts. I would point them to the hundreds of millions of people the Chinese government has pulled out of poverty, an economy that is second only to America in terms of total GDP, and a growing military that is on the verge of not only achieving regional dominance but has global aspirations.
The headlines seem to suggest a rosy future for a nation that seems almost destined to take its place as not only a great power, but as one that could even displace America as a global hegemon.
But the conventional wisdom is wrong. Beijing will have a hard time developing its economy at the breakneck speed of years past and—unless China wants to bankrupt itself—won’t have the resources to become a global military superpower to rival America. China, for all intents and purposes, has peaked.

LinkedIn’s CEO surprised an employee with a selfie at her desk while she was away on vacation (MSFT)
Mariah Walton/LinkedIn
LinkedIn employee Mariah Walton realized she was missing CEO Jeff Weiner’s visit to the social network’s Dublin offices, so she left him a note.
Weiner saw her note and took a selfie at her desk, apologizing for missing her. Walton shared the photo in a post that has since gone viral on LinkedIn.
When Dublin-based LinkedIn employee Mariah Walton realized that her vacation to Venice would mean missing a visit from LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, she took action.
Since Walton wouldn’t be there personally, she decided to leave a photo and note for Weiner, laying out her role and bemoaning that she’d miss her chance for a selfie. Walton is an analytics manager with LinkedIn, having moved to Dublin after working from the Microsoft subsidiary’s Silicon Valley headquarters for two and a half years.
“It doesn’t hurt to ‘subtly’ remind them what you do and how it helps the big picture,” writes Walton in a now-viral LinkedIn post. Well, Weiner clearly appreciated the effort, because Walton came back to find that Weiner had indeed taken a selfie with her selfie, at her desk.
Walton posted the picture to LinkedIn, where it attracted almost 30,000 Likes and about 500 comments at the time of writing. Weiner himself chimed in, thanking Walton for her contributions.
“Mariah, sorry I missed you this trip to Dublin. Keep up the great work on the international dashboard. Has been a game changer for the product team,” wrote Weiner. His post has almost 4,000 Likes on its own.
In the comments to her post, Walton explains that she didn’t have any meetings scheduled with Weiner during his visit to the Dublin office, and he wasn’t specifically there to meet her team — she just didn’t want to miss her chance to make … Read More Here...

I tried a new fitness app that charges you for every minute you spend at the gym — here’s what it’s like to use
Mark Matousek/Business Insider
The new app POPiN allows users to pay by-the-minute at participating gyms.
Users currently have access to six gyms in Manhattan.
Per-minute rates run from $0.14-$0.26.
Gym memberships are expensive, especially if you don’t use them regularly. But even if you do use your membership consistently, they often only apply to a select number of gyms that have limited hours, which means you may be forced to pay $50 for a one-time pass if you want to exercise after staying late at work or traveling.
The new app POPiN attempts to solve this problem, allowing users to pay reduced rates to workout at participating gyms based on the amount of time they spend there. (There are six gyms available so far—all in Manhattan—with two more the company’s website indicates will be available soon.) The per-minute rates run from $0.14-$0.26, which means that a 45-minute workout would cost between $6.30 and $11.70, a significant discount from the average gym’s day pass.
We tried the app at the Mercedes Club in Midtown and saw why it might change the way we exercise.
When you open the app, it shows you a map of available gyms and lists them according to how close they are.
POPiN
For each gym, you can see its hours, per-minute and per-hour rates, and reviews from other users.

9 things wedding guests actually care about
CBS
When you’re in the midst of planning a wedding, you are told time and time again that it’s your “special day.” and it should be “all about you.” For the most part this is true. It’s your wedding day and you want to make sure that you are happy with all of your choices. But while you’re busy checking off all of your must haves, it’s important not to forget your guests — many of whom travel long distances, line up babysitters, take time off of work, and spend a lot of money to share in this momentous occasion.
Although most wedding guests really don’t notice all of the little details, there are some things they actually do care about. The following are some simple ways you can keep your guests happy and comfortable without sacrificing the wedding of your dreams.
The bar
Kats Weil / unsplash
An open bar is the obvious preference for most wedding guests. But, if you will be having a cash bar, even if only for part of the reception, it’s important for your guests to know in advance so that they can arrive prepared.
“The bar was open during cocktail hour, and then we went back to get another drink during dinner and BAM, it was a cash bar,” Redditor Ireallyhatesquirrels wrote in the Reddit /r/weddingplanning thread. “We had no cash. And the nearest ATM was half a mile away. And it was raining. I’m personally not a big fan of the cash bar in general, but if you’re going that route, you really need to give your guests a heads up.”

We tried ‘the world’s most comfortable shoes’ to see if they’re as great as everyone says they are
The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.
Whether you know someone who has and loves them, or you’ve just seen enough colorful, plush-looking sneakers walking around to note the style, you’ve likely already come into contact with the San Francisco brand Allbirds.
Allbirds is only about a year old, but you’d never know that by how popular it has become.
The founder, Tim Brown, grew up in New Zealand — a place most of us rightfully associate with rolling green hills, Lord of the Rings, and hordes of fluffy sheep grazing on said green hills. It was there that he noticed the properties of merino wool and their implications — A super comfortable, sustainable material that wicks away moisture, regulates temperature, and minimizes odor? Why hadn’t this been used to make shoes before?
Well, hindsight is 20/20, and now that Allbirds exists none of us are really sure why it took this long to make either. But we’re extremely glad that Brown spent years researching and testing along with Joey Zwillinger, an engineer and renewables expert, to make the perfect wool fabric made specifically for footwear. The result is likely the most comfortable footwear option you can imagine being real.
While wool might seem oppressively hot or scratchy, this isn’t the wool your authentic Irish fisherman’s sweater is made out of. Allbirds uses the superfine New Zealand merino wool of his childhood and fibers that are 20% the diameter of a human hair, so you’ll see all the benefits without the itch. Speaking as someone who owns quite a few wool products, I can say this might as well be more closely compared to a coarser cashmere.
While Allbirds … Read More Here...

The inside story of how Trump united a city of activists to elect the most progressive district attorney in a generation
Courtesy of Cathie Berrey-Green/BG Productions Photos & Video
Civil-rights attorney Larry Krasner won the race for Philadelphia’s district attorney on in a blowout.
Krasner’s big victory can be traced to massive canvassing and get-out-the-vote operations by local activists and organizers.
Many of Philadelphia’s progressive organizations formed a coalition after the election of President Donald Trump to maximize their impact on local politics.
By the time Larry Krasner entered the William Way LGBT Center in Philadelphia Tuesday night, his victory party had already become something like a family reunion.
The ballroom was packed, sweaty with supporters. Dotted around the room were the local activists who led canvassing efforts that helped drive the civil-rights attorney to a landslide victory in the Philadelphia district attorney’s race.
Todd Wolfson, a veteran local organizer, looked around the room and shared glances with many of the city’s community leaders. Each one seemed to say, “Look what we accomplished. We made this happen.” Moments later, Krasner stepped to the podium for his victory speech.
“This is not another story about kings and queens. This is a story about a movement,” Krasner told the ecstatic crowd. “This is what a movement looks like.”
Talking with activists in the city, there is a clear sense that his victory is theirs. And the path to that victory began with the election of President Donald Trump last November.
‘I can’t sit on the sidelines anymore.’

Like it was for most liberal cities in America, the day after last year’s presidential election was dispiriting in Philadelphia.
Rick Krajewski, a software developer, woke up every day with a sense of dread.
“I remember the days after the election feeling very alienated. I was thinking, this is what it must’ve been like to be a black person in the 1960s,” … Read More Here...

Italian chains are desperate to be the next Chipotle — but pasta just won’t cut it
Hollis Johnson
Italian cuisine is starting to make its way into the fast-casual sector.
Pasta proves difficult to prepare and serve quickly for customers, and it has a sit-down dining connotation.
Pizza is better suited to the fast-casual restaurant template due to the speed and ease of its prep.
There’s always something new on the Edison bulb-lit horizon of fast-casual food — some new cuisine, some new technology, something that owners hope will take off to be as popular as the fast-casual chain to beat: Chipotle (sans E. coli and unfortunate queso).
Tex-Mex made the rounds first, followed by the “better burger” explosion exemplified by Shake Shack. And now it seems that Italian food could be next.
Fast-casual pizza chains are spreading, and fast-casual dining’s roving eye has locked its gaze on pasta. But pasta proves to be a tough food to place within the fast-food and fast-casual template.
One problem is glaringly obvious. As anyone who has ever boiled a pot of water before knows, making pasta is not necessarily a speedy operation. In the time it takes to bring a regular stockpot — never mind the huge pots needed for large-scale commercial cooking — to boil, McDonald’s can knock out several orders.
Mark Ladner’s Pasta Flyer is hoping to overcome this disadvantage with a system of precooking, freezing, and flash-boiling noodles. And frankly, it works pretty well: on a recent visit to Pasta Flyer during its soft open, our three orders of pasta were cooked and ready within five minutes of ordering. It’s an impressive feat that puts the prep time on par with fast-food joints.
Hollis JohnsonThe second problem, however, is much more difficult to shake, as it has to do with the fickle art of perception. Pasta is, at base, a comfort food.

Former MLB superstar Sammy Sosa is unrecognizable
Romain Maurice/Getty Images for InList
Sammy Sosa is in Europe to celebrate his 49th birthday.
Some photos posted on social media show a Sosa who is unrecognizable.
Sosa looks a lot different now than when he was chasing home run records with Mark McGwire.
Do you recognize former Major League Baseball slugger Sammy Sosa in the photo above? You are forgiven if you do not as he looks little like he did when he was smashing home runs for the Chicago Cubs and other teams.
The photo above is from 2016, and shows a Sosa (in the middle with the thumbs-up sign) with decidedly lighter skin than what most sports fans might remember. A year later, things have seemingly hit a new extreme.
Here are some recent photos from Franklin Mirabal of Caliente 104.1 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, who was apparently part of the group traveling Europe with Sosa and his wife, celebrating his upcoming 49th birthday.
