Nigo's marketing strategy for Bape In the early 1990s, Japan was on the cutting edge of youth culture, with trends often originating in Tokyo’s fashion districts Ura-Harajuku and Shibuya, before spreading to the rest of the city, Japan, and eventually, the world. NIGO leveraged this cultural dynamism to build hype around BAPE. One of his key techniques was to cultivate an aura of mystery and intrigue around the brand through word-of-mouth, underground marketing and strategic product endorsements. From the outset, NIGO understood the power of exclusivity. BAPE’s sales and marketing strategy took a unique approach by deliberately limiting the availability of BAPE products, a strategy that’s all too common with streetwear brands today. He produced only small quantities of each item, often fewer than 50 pieces per design, and made them available exclusively in the NOWHERE Harajuku store. The idea that BAPE items were hard to come by made them highly coveted among Tokyo’s fashion-forward youth. People who were able to get their hands on BAPE clothing became part of an exclusive club, and this sense of belonging fueled the brand’s growth.

The BAPE Logo was Inspired by the 1968 Film, “Planet of the Apes” 🦍 A lot of references for A Bathing Ape predominantly came from Planet Of The Apes memorabilia. Slogans, characters, names, color palettes, & illustrations were all re-interpreted into shirts, hoodies, jeans, sneakers, accessories, and more. NIGO meticulously collected everything Planet Of The Apes to fully understand the references of his designs. By making small slight adjustments and simply branding the slogans on clothing, he gave the movie and its iconic imagery appeal to a new generation and led the Urahara street movement.
(i didnt know that until 5 minutes ago, hell yeah, fun fact)
yes, it's clear that he took inspo from both planet of the apes and fuct.

NIGO’s favorite city was New York at the time. When NIGO was walking around the streets of New York, we can see his close friends, hobbies and collections that he was currently obsessed with. This was a private side of him that we don’s usually see. Even those who wanted to travel to New York in the future would enjoy it with a relaxed feeling.
NIGO started his NYC trip with eating a hot dog at GRAY‘S PAPAYA, which was also famous locally, and let’s end it with those precious collection that NIGO collected in the trip.
Original photos were taken by master @pmken , original pages were edited by sempai @akiosky , clean pics were scanned from a 2011 [Relax] Magazine by ApeDigger.
(new york, for what i know, has to be the mecca of streetwear, for example supreme... all i need to say lol)

Tomoaki “Nigo” Nagao has been shaping global culture since the ’90s; first with the game-changing rise of BAPE, then through creative partnerships like Billionaire Boys Club and Human Made.
A Bunka Fashion College alumnus, he fused Tokyo streetwear with hip-hop, working alongside Pharrell, Clipse, and Tyler, the Creator—on music as well as fashion.
In 2021, Nigo became artistic director of Kenzo. His debut collection in 2022 paid homage to founder Kenzo Takada, blending archival elements with his signature workwear–streetwear fusion. More than a designer, Nigo is a cultural connector—bridging worlds, decades, and disciplines with clarity and craft.
(nigo is a streetwear legend because he FUSED two awesome different things together and made something new, he created streetwear fusion, i love that phrase)
i love this quote:
"Nigo is a cultural connector—bridging worlds, decades, and disciplines with clarity and craft."
you gotta connect shit you know and love and make something awesome.
fusion's the future (that sounds culty but like creativity is just connecting things, read more and learn more, listen more, handwrite more, use your awesome brain even more)

Herbie Hancock - Thought It Was You (1978)
Clip from promo video of Herbie Hancock’s vocoder classic “I Thought It Was You” from 1978. Hancock used the Senheiser VSM-201 Vocoder for the song.
#herbiehancock
Herbie Hancock + vocoders = a good time
i actually listened to this song for the first time yesterday and man, Herbie's an alien, there's no way he's not.

Madlib photographed by B+ @bpleasel for the ‘Shades of Blue: Madlib Invades Blue Note’ album cover (2003). The producer known for flipping jazz, soul, funk and rock samples was exposed to jazz from an early age. With both parents being soul singers and his uncle, jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis, he was basically born into music. As a master of sampling, he got access to all of the recordings of legendary jazz label Blue Note Records. It’s been described as Madlib’s love letter to jazz as he samples and reinterprets the music of the Blue Note greats that left a mark on him 💿🔵
(one, this is my first time seeing the first image in color and 2: i NEED to listen to this album more, madlib's a genius's genius for producers)
