This was a funny one, the reference I was given of Teferi made it look like he had longer hair... and then when I sent in the final they wanted to give him shorter hair. I work traditionally and didn't have time to repaint, so I gave him a digital haircut. Eventually I painted over the original so that it matched.

Gencon!

Hey folks I'm going to be at Gencon next week. Come say hello! I'll have prints and goodies, and I'll be signing MTG cards. This is my first big event in a probably over 5 years, I'm really excited to see people.

You know what I forgot to share? All of my Magic: the Gathering art. They hired me in 2020 and I still have imposter syndrome every time the contact me for more work. These are a collection of my favorites I've done so far, Demonic Bargain remains my all time favorite.

Tumblr is a weird place. My ancient Nimona fanart is circulating right now, stuff that I barely remember painting and is attached to a long dead username. I’m going to have to watch the movie and make new fanart to make myself feel better.

SPIRIT OF THE HEALING CUP, 2020

A personal painting I did during a very difficult and uninspired year. If you want to see more of the process of painting this piece you can find it here in The Archive.

BOG QUEEN, 2020 A commission where I was asked to draw inspiration from Seamus Heaney's poem of the same name... I lay waiting between turf-face and demesne wall, between heathery levels and glass-toothed stone.

My body was braille for the creeping influences: dawn suns groped over my head and cooled at my feet,

through my fabrics and skins the seeps of winter digested me, the illiterate roots

pondered and died in the cavings of stomach and socket. I lay waiting

on the gravel bottom, my brain darkening, a jar of spawn fermenting underground

dreams of Baltic amber. Bruised berries under my nails, the vital hoard reducing in the crock of the pelvis.

My diadem grew carious, gemstones dropped in the peat floe like the bearings of history.

My sash was a black glacier wrinkling, dyed weaves and phoenician stitchwork retted on my breasts'

soft moraines. I knew winter cold like the nuzzle of fjords at my thighs–

the soaked fledge, the heavy swaddle of hides.

SHE SHINES IN THE ABYSS, 2019 Did this one inspired by the moon and tides. And excuse to draw crabs and swirlies.

THE DEVIL’S INVITATION, 2019

Another throwback, this one from 2019. This piece was made for an art show comprised of pieces inspired by music. I picked Aldous Harding’s “Stop Your Tears”, specifically the lyrics:

The yellow rose is a stranger, The Devil’s invitation in bloom.

I fondly remember painting and glazing, pushing and pulling, all the little lace details on the ruff and cuffs. Makes me want to paint lace again...
