Coming back to the transkei after about 10 or so years, I was so surprised that nothing had really changed. However, this was something new that I had done here at Umngazana. Swimming with the local kids was sort of an eye opener. Our lives are very different. Unlike many children, they're able to come down to the river together (without their parents) and swim in extremely dangerous rivers, with strong tides where there are (on occasion) sharks that swim into the river mouth, and they could easily get sucked out to sea. They know what they're doing though, as they have been tought from a very young age. They are some of the most friendliest people that I have met in a while while traveling my own country. We spoke to them (even though there was a bit of a language barrier), helped some of them conquer their fear of jumping off the end of the jetty and took some cool pics with them. This is something I would love to go back to and soon. The transkei is one of the most amazing places in South Africa. I encourage anyone who has never gone to plan a trip there. If it's with your mates it's even better. Hiking the amphitheater in the darkensburg was epic, one of the most amazing views I have ever come across.
