Thesis Development: Going Back To The Start.

Yes, i know, i promised this one would come a lot sooner than right now, but, the ones who follow me on Instagram already know, the Friday before the last, I woke up with the most unimaginable pain running from the base of my skull down through to the base of my neck, since then, i haven’t been allowed (or able) to work, or use my laptop or even sit up for too long. I tried to keep you guys updated through Instagram so you wouldn’t yell at me for being so late, but truth is, i wasn’t even allowed to use my phone much. But, i’m better now, and this is the first time since that dreadful day that i have opened up my laptop and the first thing i knew i had to do was sit down and talk to you guys.

Anyhow, i’m going to stop whining now and start talking about stuff that is a bit more interesting (i hope).

Thesis Development: 

So, for my thesis, i had always planned to do something with a lot of meaning, a lot of drama, a lot of depth, you know, something along the lines of ‘Art for a cause’. But this thought process changed when i actually had to sit down and decide what i wanted to do for my mini thesis back in 3rd year. Rewinding back, I realised the unconscious evolution in my work which started from obsessing over the colour red, and then the excessive use of Crimson Red  Winsor Oil Paint in almost every painting, to attempting to get over my fear of blood, to playing with meat, again, just pushing my limits because I can’t stand the smell or the texture of meat, or even the sight of it. (Every time i try cooking with it, i have to resort to surgical gloves, i know, very bourgeois, but i can’t help myself**)

These picture are from the first performance I’ve ever done, which was basically me creating a delicious looking cream cone, with sprinkles and a wafer on the side, but instead of a cherry on top, i topped it off with little chicken hearts instead. So it was basically, with a heart on top.

For an installation, i used ink inside a blood bag to create a comical, yet political statement of how these gadgets have turned into a source of life for us.

So, moving forward with my mini thesis, i figured i would stick to meat, and continued working, pretty obsessively. Here i worked with inks to paint out my version of it’s visual:

and then went on to using actual goat hearts to focusing on chemical reactions based on meat soaked in an air tight bottle in alcohol. (It turned very dry, very detailed and almost like the skin of an old person. So extremely cringe worthy**)

I even explored video making, I had tried it once before so i thought i would give it another shot. 

These are a few stills from the video, since my technically challenged self still can’t figure out how to upload videos to a post.

But even through these pieces my work evolved and the last piece i created was a composition of red, orange, white, and purple balloons, all in different sizes and levels (my preoccupied self at that time forgot to document it), which was basically the piece that helped me take my work further and gave me a hint to how everything was about to evolve even further.   **I’d type everything in this but, it would make it a very long post, so part 2 coming up soon!  **Also, this blog post was written over a span of days, so you might feel a change in pace but hopefully, the next one up will be better.  Speak to you guys soon! bye.

Cityscape

So, right after our minor ended, all the other disciplines went back to their usual printing presses, miniature studios and sculpting spaces, but we kept at it and continued working in the direction they were taking us through to during our minor. 

At this point in our academic careers we’ve moved past painting. Let me explain this to you: I’m a painting major getting a degree for my bachelors in Fine Art but I’m getting trained to be a visual artist. A very confusing definition for an average person, but pretty standard for us, i guess. At least now it is. Even though i miss painting with a passion, visual art is probably the more practical option for us in this day and age of art. i think. or that’s what we’ve been told and taught anyway so we kind of have to believe it to be true. 

Annyyyyway, coming back to the work, we had to film a triptych: which is basically, three videos co-relating to each other. Our topic: Cityscape. 

We had to interpret cities through our own thought process, which is always pretty interesting since everyone thinks in a way that is almost impossible for you to think in, the work that everyone else in my batch comes up with, it blows my mind at how genius some of them are, and how i could never even come close to their thought process: it’s all so different and so foreign to me. 

Putting my thinking cap on, i snuggled up into my cube (the one i made for the aliens but am obsessed with now, and low-key want one at home as well**) , with my cushions and my laptop and i began brain storming. 

Coming up with a bunch of ideas, i narrowed it down to the favourite two: 

City of words.

City of thoughts.

My first option being the one i was most excited to work with, since i had just found my dad’s typewriter and i just wanted to use it, somehow, anyhow, force fitting it into my work, because, um, duh, typewriter.

(You’ve got an easily distracted creature sitting behind the screen right now, but you’ve probably already noticed that** Ms.Obvious checking in…)

ANYWAY. Coming back to where we were, so i pitched in the idea to use paper as a house, the alphabets on each paper can be the individuals and so i could work with typing stuff out on paper, and you know, like all these cool writers, i could ball it all up and throw it in a corner until i have a fair amount, that could be the construction of the city, and then, you know, when i keep on going, over population. 

So, being very confident with my super smart idea and a forced typewriter inclusion, i went in for a discussion, where, after a while of going back and forth, my tutors and i concluded that this would be more effective as a performance than through a video, and would probably direct the conversation to a very different route from where i wanted it to go. So basically, wrong choice of medium for this particular idea. They wanted me to work without thinking of the viewer, since i never manage to exclude the viewer from my thought process.

Since i wanted to have something to work on, i discussed my second option, from where i started thinking about filming and working with audios, in an house which was currently under construction. (City of thoughts: a house under construction, because our present is constantly being constructed, right, and then the rooms in there compartmentalise different parts of our thoughts, and memories, like, for example, one room could be the room of the past, where, after stepping in, it would suddenly go all dark and the audios would start going in reverse and stop at a child crying, because,  you know, the usual ‘i was born crying’ stuff.) So, knowing that one of my friends is having her house constructed near by, i asked if we could go there and i could film. i knew what i wanted to do and how i wanted to do it. i had envisioned the piece coming to life, and the visuals were basically just going from room to room and then using audios to explain every chamber of my thoughts, and memories. um, wait, did i just say i knew what i wanted to do? LOL. nope. i got there and i was blank. Still tried to go on with what i had in mind, but i was just not happy with what i had shot, even after i edited it, no, it just wasn’t working for me. 

So, after wasting almost an entire week, i basically just threw all of my initial work out of the window (my mind’s window** because hello, gotta keep the process work, proof that i worked, heh) and started over. This time, going back to the original idea of words, but ditching the typewriter this time (</3) 

I’ve already posted one of the videos here, my never ending book, so if you’ve been following me for a while now, you’ve probably seen it. That was an introduction into one of my homes. so, in my head, every book is a home to hundreds of pages, right? and every page has varying amount of words and alphabets printed on, which feel like it’s personality, geddit? So, my never ending book was video #1, an introduction. 

Video #2 was an audio with a blank black screen and occasional subtitles, which had Siri’s definition of a book, on repeat:

‘Book means a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers. As a noun it means a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.’

The next video was, again, going back to the original idea, construction, population and over population.

Jury Day:

So i displayed my work on 6″x4″ LCD screens, in the midst of a (not-so-literally) ton of books. 

To be very honest, i wasn’t entirely satisfied with the display. these were placed on top of a desk, and the desk had my laptop sitting there, playing the audio with a blank black screen and occasional subtitles. 

It didn’t feel right but, i didn’t have the time to fix it or come up with alternate options. The jurors walked in, saw my display, and walked straight to me. (I wasn’t even wearing my shoes, i kid you not** that is how unprepared i was)

But they came, and took their time viewing my work, my insides were squirming waiting for them to say something but they didn’t, until after what felt like an eternity. 

Basically, to cut it short (short? i guess this blog redefines the meaning of short, heh) they loved two out of the three videos. To them, the never ending book felt redundant and unnecessary, but the audio and the other video went together well, and made sense (YAY). They had their reservations about the display, which, i expected, since i wasn’t happy with it either, how could they be?

All in all, i think it went better than i had expected, working without thinking of the viewer kind of helped, but at the same time, it was an effortlessly translating what i wanted to translate, or at least that is what i think it did. 

so, yay.

A little update on where I’ve been.

I know, i know, i’ve been pretty MIA, again, but it was all for good reason. The last time i posted an update on my work, which was not through instagram, was on the 28th of April, so it has almost been exactly a month since i wrote for you guys. Right after that post, we were pulled into a video based assignment that we had little to no idea how to do, so basically venturing into new (tear-inducing) softwares and what not was a task, and then the next two weeks we had to work pretty intesively for our ‘mock’ thesis. Yes, two weeks for a mock that had to decide whether or not we will be allowed to produce a thesis or not. Such warm happy feelings, no? No. But safe to say, i barely even had time to breathe. However, i am back now, with regular updates on my work. Will probably be starting off by explaining the bits and pieces that i have been posting without more than a title, so hopefully we will try and satisfy your confusions about the development of my work. 

 Coming back here, the one thing i’m looking forward to the most is reading everything that you guys have to say, and more, about my work and otherwise. (To say that replying to my emails and DMs from you guys is my absolute favourite thing to do, would be an understatement.**)

Haha, i’ve just been very stressed, had a lot of work to do and very little time for my final jury so it’s just been taking a toll on me. Well… the last time i cried was three days ago. And yes, one less fan. Haha. That was a good one. But thank you for your concern. :) Happy summer to you!

What up homie? I see you been preparing for your thesis, what is gonna be about? I think you should stick to meat like its your own and please don't get distracted. Own what you came for.

Hey! My work started off from meat, and obviously it's not going to leave it's essence, but my work has evolved and has gone into exploring and focusing on obsessive behaviour. My starting point was the piece that i was working on while i was working on meat, now i'm just waiting to see what this evolves into. :)
