Social Media Ethics

Social Media Ethics
The current state of social media ethics: what trends are happening in the industry? What are two current cases related to social media ethics? Outline the current code of ethics for social media by a professional organization you would be interesting in joining as part of their social media staff.
Some social media trends happening currently are; The advancement of TikTok, Social audio’s popularity, The increase in Social Media for customer service, and video content will continue to dominate the social domain.
Defining the current code of ethics for an organization of my choice that I’d like to be apart of would be, YouTube.Ā
YouTube’s code of ethics is more personal/user based. They believe in privacy and personal information to be kept under wraps.
Ā YouTube avoids providing personal information beyond what is presented in a video or on a channel page. They use YouTube usernames rather than names, and don't aim to find personal information that is not made publicly available by a creator.
As for two current Ethical cases, I’d say Meta Platforms, would be facing one.
Due to the immersive VR community and what it will bring, the company (Meta) will and is facing ethical issues as we speak. They’re dealing with Metaverse Monitoring, Safety, and the inevitable, giving top tier Tech Companies more power than ever inside the Metaverse. Now this sparks conflict with users and staff members alike when high end Tech companies will be able to make the rules or be, ā€œAbove the code of conduct.ā€
This is one current issue regarding social media ethics.Ā
Another ethical issue would stem from Instagram. Instagram is facing an issue due to a user base report system without the proper amount of moderators.Ā
Instagram relies heavily on user reporting of inappropriate content, such as posts depicting illegal activity or the use of coded hashtags and emojis to conceal, but continue on with such practices.
Brands/professionals with strong social media ethical codes: what brands are utilizing proper social media ethical practices? Are there any professionals that you feel practice strong ethical behavior on social media? Support your choice with evidence. What are some takeaways you can bring forth in your own practices?
I feel as, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and YouTube all follow a strong ethical code of conduct.Ā
Linkedin’s ethical code is pretty simplistic. They believe everyone working for or on behalf of LinkedIn, should meet the same high bar that we set for our company. One of their core values is being ā€œOpen, Honest and Constructive.ā€ They also understand that raising concerns isn't always easy.
YouTube’s code of ethics is more personal/user based.Ā
Ā YouTube avoids providing personal information beyond what is presented in a video or on a channel page. They use YouTube usernames rather than names, and don't aim to find personal information that is not made publicly available by a creator.
Pinterest’s ethical code is based off tolerance. They immediately report any concerns or unsafe posts.Ā
Pinterest does not tolerate threats, hostility, disrespectful conduct, or aggressive acts, and weapons are not permitted on Pinterest user interface.
Key concepts and issues: what main concepts do you are necessary to adhere to for your own personal conduct online?
Some key concepts I feel strongly about would be,Ā
Posting a detail or details about a client, no matter how insignificant, may allow others to identify your client and reveal that this client is receiving treatment from you. It is imperative that you protect your patients identity and keep treatment details confidential. A breach of confidentiality could occur from situations such as posting a seemingly innocent Facebook comment that could potentially allow others to identify your client, posting an unredacted or partially redacted page of a patient’s treatment records to Instagram to show how much progress a client has made using your services, or seeking online guidance that could inadvertently reveal your client’s private
information. Similarly, you have an ethical obligation to keep confidential any personal information about persons participating in your research projects.
Bullet point 5-10 core concepts that you will follow as a practicing social media professional. Include citations that you used for sources/supports for this.
Never compromise on privacy
Be transparentĀ
Stay away from Bias posts
Avoid conflicts of interestĀ
Act professionalĀ

Pencils of Promise creates new hope
Joshua Webber
Prof. Susi
COMM-1400-600
For my Non-Profit Organization, I have chosen Pencils Of Promise (POP).Ā
This charity was created in 2008 by Adam Braun, in order to spread educational awareness throughout the world. This charity focuses on building schools in 3rd world countries where children struggle immensely to gain any type of education. Since its founding in October 2008, the organization has built 554 schoolsĀ across Laos, Guatemala and Ghana. More than 110,000 students attend the schools globally. https://pencilsofpromise.orgĀ
Pencils Of Promise can be found on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and Facebook.
They’re a very large organization but use a lot of different tactics other than social media to gain donors, such as events across the world, private donors, and even huge companies. This obviously doesn’t mean they don’t use social media as voice to gain audience on the apparent issue. They have large viewer base on most of their social media websites, such as Instagram, with a staggering 200,034 followers. On their Twitter as well, they have over 200k followers (202,700) to be exact. Facebook has 208,978 followers, and 1,164,296 views on YouTube collectively. This shows most people are engaged on the three major social media platforms.Ā
They have a larger following base than like traction to most of their posts or tweets.
Twitter they may have 0-420 comments or 0-500 likes per post. Their Instagram has anywhere between 500-3,000 likes per post, while their comments are from 1-150. Now for Facebook, they have likes per post between 1-157, comments between, 1-47. Pencils Of Promise YouTube however, shows a little more love with 400-243,000 per video.
When researching their vanity metrics, they receive about 44.7k hits monthly and steadily increasing. https://twitter.com/PencilsOfPromis?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Due to their high follower base on social outlets, they definitely have room for improvement.
I believe they could be more interactive with their viewers and donors on their platforms.
Although huge mainstream celebrities, such as Justin Bieber, DJ BLAU, and the infamous social media king, Gary Vaynerchuk himself have all publicly spoken on and donated to Pencils Of Promise, but that’s not all these influencer’s have actually gone to Guatemala and other 3rd world countries to actually help build these schools. On another side people like DJ BLAU, have taken a different approach using music as a form of donation, while each stream generates revenue that goes towards this charity, they really go into detail about how they work with BLAU’s own streaming service and even Spotify to help the cause. https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/dj-justin-3lau-blau-raises-200000-for-pencils-of-promise-w451896/Ā
Personally I believe if they were to partner with larger groups such as sports teams on national television, they would be able to reach out to millions of more viewers and increase their audience flow tremendously, but they could even start at a lower rate with Tik Tok by creating user friendly videos for children, that would likely show their parents, etc;
As I stated prior, I believe an advanced metric they could work on would be engaging more with their followers on instagram, seeing they don’t have many replies or much activity under their posts. As for a behavioral metric, they are pretty much on top of spreading awareness about their cause and frequently at that if I may add. A channel metric I would suggest would again, be creating more post’s dedicated to a younger audience. In these ways, I believe they would be able to see revenue and viewer engagement beyond what they are currently receiving or even projecting, though this charity is not that old they still have a long road ahead of them, and by implanting these tactics, personally I think they will not only continue to keep increasing their social media outlets, but benefit millions of more children around the world to gain an opportunity for education and freedom.

Joshua Webber Social Media -
Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share information and create web content, but it’s much much more than just that. I’ve been on social media for a while now and the vast array of new opportunities is massive and only growing at an astonishing rate. Present day social media has now allowed the users to monetize off the site(s), in many ways, from being a brand ambassador or promoting your own company or brand. This is huge in the webspace, although it may make some people lazy, others could benefit off, say, a ā€˜Fitness Blog’. In my opinion, not only is social media a beautiful place to express yourself or meet new people, to have the luxury to create whatever it is you want to pursue or just get out into webspace is really something else.
I’ve been using social media for a while, I find solace in the webspace, being able to lose yourself in story, build a unique profile or get lost in videos, theres an everlasting and growing amount to do and more, especially to come in the m3taverse, may as well revolutionize social media as we know it. Which would be another reason I love social media, we're breaking different types of records and it's extremely fascinating to be able to be a part of. I like to experiment with social media, wether it’s businesses or blogs or vlogs. Creating content and being able to look at the analytics so I can furthermore boost my audience, we’ve evolved and I think it will only speed up from here.
I’d like to say my social media understanding is well versed, but there’s always something else, so I personally don’t think anyones fluent in social media, but they could be in an aspect of social media. There is so much to explore in the space, Some of my challenges with social media; I just try to enjoy myself, so I’m not sure I may have many challenges with much other than maybe, understanding some technicalities.
What I’m looking to get out of this class; I’m looking forward to being able to connect with all of you and share ideas on our social media views, as well as staying versed in basic aspects. Beyond this class, I may work more on business based social media marketing. I'm particularly interested in the NFT projects right now, it's extremely fascinating and yet, another way we can not only express ourselves, but communicate in now a whole different way. It amazes me that everyone can monetize off that as well. I believe not just the internet, but social media as well, have only just begun. Just taking a look at all of our advancements in such a short period of time, and upcoming ones as well, is amazing, we have came such a long way, I say this because the next 5-10 years down the line, will probably, no i garuntee, will be even more exciting than it is now.
