Chapter 2 is done!

It's been a long time coming, but I have finally completed Chapter 2 of Inheritor: Tribe of Khalil. Chapter 1 took 15 months to complete. That's because it was in color and I had a full-time job during half of production. Though, it's been almost 2 years since I finished Chapter 1, I didn't start serious working on Chapter 2 until this summer, mostly because I was working retail and had to worry about the big move across the country. However, once I got to work, I got Chapter 2 done in a little over 100 days. When considering working retail, my wisdom tooth surgery recovery, an election I had to emotionally recovery rough, weekends, and unforeseen circumstances, I was able to consistently produce one page every day that I worked on the comic. While working on it, I was often upset with myself for not working fast enough, but compared to the 15-month production of Chapter 1, I've made an insane improvement.

Once again, I am left with a "now what". I don't plan on releasing Chapter 2 for a while. I'd like a buffer so that I can upload chapters more consistently, so that viewers don't have to wait 1+ years for a chapter. One of the downsides to that, however, is that there's no recognition from fans when I finish a chapter. There is no feedback or critique to tell me whether or not I've done a good job or if I'm moving in the right direction. And there is no "congratulations" for finishing the work I've spent months on. Kinda makes it seems like it was all for nothing. But on the bright side! The fact that I don't feel a sense of accomplishment will keep me working on the story. Now I will be pushing to complete Chapter 3 and I feel the same way, Chapter 4! That will at least get me to complete an entire volume of the story. I think then and only then will I know if I have something. I'm excited to get to that point and I hope I do so soon. I'd prefer it if every chapter didn't take 1.5 years to complete.

I'm going to take a short break before getting started on Chapter 3. I do have a draft of the script done, but I'd like to polish it up a lot more before moving on to the storyboarding phase. If I do want to make some more art though, there is always the cover for Chapter 2 (also a new one for Chapter 1). As well as more art for the series. I need to get better at producing that kind of stuff. Oh and I also should probably make a website where I can begin posting these chapters.

What I've been up to...

So...that "next storyboarding job" that I mentioned waiting for in my last post never came. The LA Animation Industry sort of imploded in what seems like minutes after my last post. Long story short, I had to go back to working retail, where I've been working for the past year. Working on INHERITOR had to take a backseat while I tried to get my finances in order and waited for the animation industry to get back on its feet. And all my hard work and patience led to me....

Moving back home.

I've been back to living in my hometown for a little over a month now. It sucks honestly. I really hoped for a career in the animation industry and hope to keep living in LA but ended up continuing to work retail in my hometown. On the bright side, things are so much cheaper here. The two-bedroom apartment that my wife and I live in now is cheaper than the studio apartment that we were living in for four years. But that brings me to some updates on INHERITOR...

I haven't had the time (but more importantly, the energy) to work on Inheritor: Tribe of Khalil while I was doing storyboard work, due to it draining my creative energy. I THOUGHT things would be different when I switched to retail, since I was working fewer hours. WRONG. Now I was more physically drained. So unfortunately, very few INHERITOR pages were completed in the past year. But the ones that were completed look amazing.

Now that I'm back home and virtually hit artistic rock bottom, I have refocused on completing the next chapter of INHERITOR: TRIBE OF KHALIL for a 2025 release date and completing pages more consistently. For starters, every day after work I've been repurposing Chapter One of INHERITOR to a more manga-inspired art style, so that it can match the next few chapters that I'll be completing. It may be recency bias, but INHERITOR looks so much better in black & white. I can't wait for you to see the updated pages.

Inheritor: Tribe of Khalil is now on Webtoon!!!

I've only been reading webtoons for about a year and a half now, but ever since getting on the app, I always fantasized about having my series on the platform.

Now what? Well, the series will be uploaded every Monday, starting on May 29th. I'll be uploading the first 20 episodes before (depending on audience reaction) I start working on the series weekly!

I have very little expectations; I know that it takes a while to build an audience and will likely take me even longer because I am awful at marketing. Fortunately, I have a lot of episodes to upload that will (hopefully) help me build up an audience, slowly. One thing they never tell you about buffering your episodes is that it is SO frustrating. I just want everyone to see the super cool action scenes and improved drawings, not the older and slower stuff that I drew over a year ago. But it's all necessary to setting the story and giving me time to work at my day job and handle other responsibilities.

It's also a great learning opportunity for learning how and when to upload without changing my work schedule too much. On the next batch of episodes, there are a few things that I think I'll change. Next, I will probably make the episodes longer. At this point, I averaged about 20 panels per episode because some of the webtoons I've read have gone on for 60, which ended up boring me and hurting my finger from scrolling. But I think I overcorrected. 40 panels might now be a bad thing to try, it'll just take a LOT more buffering.

So as I'm writing this, Episode 5 of Inheritor: Tribe of Khalil has been uploaded to Webtoons, 15 more to go, which means 15 more weeks to go. That means that we'll reach a stopping point in September, I'm not sure what to expect once I reach that point. I'll likely take a long hiatus to evaluate the property/audience reactions/mistakes and see if it's worth pursuing any further and if so, what I can do to make it better.
