Covid19, the Cumberlege Review, and the future of Hysterical Women
An update on #HystericalWomen and why, post-Covid19 and the Cumberlege Review, it's more important than ever to keep shouting about #healthinequalities. Here's how you can help:
It’s probably an understatement to say it’s been a weird few months since I last posted way back in February. When Covid19 hit, I took the decision to put Hysterical Women on the back burner, partly to concentrate on  my (paid) freelance work, and partly for the sake of my own mental health – both of which have taken a significant hit. At the start of lockdown, it felt like there was really only…

‘I would bleed through a pad and a tampon in an hour’: When heavy periods are a medical condition – The i
Stigma and lack of awareness are leaving women without treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding, according to the inaugural report published by the Menstrual Health Coalition.
One in five women experience heavy periods, which can be associated with a host of other gynaecological issues. But research by the MHC found that one in three women affected by heavy menstrual bleeding have never spoken to…

"It seems extraordinary how government advice is, quite rightly, to isolate in order to contain the spread of the virus - unless you are a woman requiring essential health care, in which case the Government will force you to go on a completely unnecessary journey to a crowded clinic or hospital. I simply cannot understand why the Government is behaving in such a cruel and reckless manner towards women's health," says Dr Jonathan Lord, co-chair of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Abortion Taskforce and British Society of Abortion Providers (BSACP).⠀ ⠀ My latest for @theipaper looks at how women are needlessly being forced to risk their health to access abortion care - with services already buckling due to coronavirus. Much love and thanks to @bpas_1968 💜 https://ift.tt/2wHJwqz

"We are facing an unprecedented challenge with 50 per cent of our annual income at very real risk". ⠀ ⠀ With fundraising events being cancelled, and donors tightening their belts, the financial impact of coronavirus could be devastating for smaller charities. ⠀ ⠀ For @theipaper, I spoke to @eveappeal, @childdotorg, @wellchild and more, who are launching emergency appeals to ensure their financial survival: https://buff.ly/2WnHiaf ⠀ ⠀ Link on my profile ⤴️ https://ift.tt/2QnITci

Speaking of eco-friendly disposables... it’s been a good week for #gifted period freebies! 🩸 Many thanks to @essencepr for sending me @dameforgood’s innovative reusable applicator and organic tampons 💚 . We throw away sooo much plastic from our period products every month and, as I mentioned, I’m trying to be greener about my periods by using period pants with tampons as a backup. But I also struggle with the flimsy cardboard applicators that come with some of the eco tampons on the market 🤦‍♀️ . Dame’s reusable applicator is the first of its kind and I’m hoping it’ll prove to be a game-changer! 🤞 . #periods #ecoperiod #ecoperiods #periodpositive #enviromenstrual #greenperiod #plasticfree #plasticfreeperiods #menstrualcycle #menstruation #menstruationmatters #periodtalk #talkingperiods #reusableperiodproducts #periodpants #menstrualhealth #womenshealth #menstrualmovement #periodpower #periodpowerful #ecofriendlyperiod https://ift.tt/2vcEBgD

Pretty smitten with @modibodi’s new colours 😍 . These were #gifted but I’ve been a fan of Modibodi since I met them at @angeladsaini & @alexob2209’s #BloodyShame event last year🩸 . Period pants are absolutely my reusable period product of choice (menstrual cups just aren’t for me, sorry cup fans!) along with trying to switch to more eco-friendly disposables. Looking forward to trying them out in a couple of weeks! ❤️💙 . #period #periodpanties #periodpants #periods #enviromenstrual #ecoperiod #ecoperiods #ecofriendlyperiod #modibodi https://ift.tt/2TB6ato

'It's just a relapse,' my GP told me, in that reassuring tone that I'm always so grateful for. But it didn't feel like 'just' anything. It felt catastrophic, an abject failure.⠀ ⠀ Pretty nervous about sharing something quite so raw but, in the interests of practising what I preach, I wrote for @Refinery29UK about antidepressants, PTSD, and mental health relapses. Link on my profile.⠀ ⠀ Thank you to @MindCharity https://ift.tt/2VW8nRV

One in five women experience heavy periods, which can be associated with a host of other gynaecological issues. But research by the @MH_coalition found that one in three women affected by heavy menstrual bleeding have never spoken to their doctor about it, and 30 per cent of women who did seek help waited at least three years before doing so. For @theipaper, I spoke to @jillyjbean about her experiences of fainting, intense pain, and bleeding through pads, tampons, clothes and bedding. https://ift.tt/2uUhV4O
