Character model sheet

Here is my model sheet for my character, Granny. I wanted to keep the rough/blurred edges to this character as she is meant to be slightly creepy and I thought having clean line work won’t suit her characteristics.

Cast sheet

This is my completed character cast sheet. I wanted to keep with my Halloween theme for this project, hence the spookier colours and rough edges to the characters.

Character cycle
This is the finished character walk cycle. I wanted to have the steps uneven and the hair to have a lot of secondary action as I wanted it to have lots of life.

Character turnaround
Here is my finished character turnaround. I used my character model sheet as a template for each of the frames. I also made this into 3′s as this slowed the animation down and made the final product more appealing.

Dynamic cycle
Here is my finished dynamic walk cycle completed on TV Paint. The overall movement of the sneak walk is conveyed, this does need polishing, however I would do so if I had more time to do so. The movements are pretty smooth and the proportions are consistent.

Tracing walk cycles
In this session we used Gif’s from online and traced them with the simple parts of the character to see the movement of the walk cycle in its most raw from. This allowed us to look at the movemts of different cycles and the different ways a character can move.
This Gif was quite quick and bouncy, the arms having extra sway give the impression of happiness or the feeling of being proud.
The movement in this Gif is quite exaggerated and seems proud or joyful as the head bobs side to side and the arm movements are strong.
The movement in this Gif was very strong and heavy, the minimal arm movement helps convey tiredness or annoyance.
This character was listening to music in the original, this is shown through the head movement and the lightness of the body.

Character Ball
01/10/19
Using TV Paint again, we created our own ball bounce sequence without a guide. This was challenging to get right, however using previous work as reference was useful. Once perfected, we added a secondary action to the ball to add more character. I added some eyes and little feet onto mine :)

Creating your own frames and guide lines was challenging. However when you think of the practical basics of animation ( the principles) it makes it easier to know how the ball will squash at the bottom and stretch out afterwards, and how the ball will fall quicker than going up, so the frames will be more sparse on the way down.

Character exploration

This is my first outcome of my main character, this came from the lesson with the paint splotches. However, I knew I couldn't decide on this character straight away as there was much more exploration needed.

These are from my sketchbook, I decided to go outside in the city of Norwich and simply draw characters from what I saw. These gave great inspiration for my thumbnail pages and further iteration.

First iterations

This is the first iteration of one of my thumbnail characters I was drawn to... I want to stick to a Halloween theme for this cast, hence the spooky colours and build of the character. I will be developing this one more, mainly on the colour scheme as I want a sophisticated character out of this one.

Here is my potential main character for my cast. As shown in the top left, I wanted to change the design to get a more female looking character that resembles an elderly woman. The bushy hair is essential for this character and I think that’s one aspect that will be staying. The colouring of this character still needs to be tested.

Life drawing

04/11/19
We started our session with a series of hand drawings. Focusing on the build of the hand, and the main functions of rotation and movements. It was difficult at first, however once I had completed a few drawings, it became easier to do.

We then done a longer drawing of the full body (as shown I ran out of time) but the shading and proportions went really well.

In this session we focused on anticipation of the character before it jumped. I achieved this through having a small run-up towards the character jumping, and having the flour sack to be squashed before it stretched out as it left the ground. I would of liked to add more of an ending to the clip as it finishes quite abruptly.
However, overall this task went well and the anticipation is clear in the characters body positioning and posing at the beginning.

For this session, we done our first vanilla walk cycle on F12 paper, and transferred it onto dragonframe. We were guided through each frame, and where to put each frame for reference for the next frame. This was challenging to do, which, for me, made me appreciate the process an animator has to go through, for such a simple movement.

Going through each frame was time consuming, however you had to focus on the proportions of the character, the arc swing of the arm, knee placements and much more.

Research

https://coraline.fandom.com/wiki/The_Beldam_(Other_Mother)
Unsure on my question at this stage, I completed some general research from watching videos and visiting websites to get more of an idea on my chosen character as I only had a rough idea about the concepts around the other mother.

Photoshop colouring

03/10/19
Using different layers and brushes to colour the character was pretty simple. Taking colour inspiration from another character helped to spark ideas. I took a female warlock character from the Destiny game I love playing, this is because the costume layout looked similar and gave a nice persona to the character.
