My exhibition, exo ̈geology.., opens next weekend at Antenna gallery in New Orleans (Opening/Vernissage: Saturday July 8th, 6-10pm). It will be up through August 6th. It includes all new work, as well as an exhibition catalogue with writing by Anne-Sophie Miclo and Burke Jam.
About the exhibition:
Exogeology, also known as planetary geology, is a field of study that uses existing knowledge of geological (earthly) features and processes to research celestial rocky bodies. It is an inherently interdependent field: the basis of understanding newly discovered planets is rooted in first having a deep knowledge of Earth. Yet, how do we distinguish what constitutes “Earth”? An estimated 48.5 tons of meteoritic material falls on the surface of our planet each day and is incorporated into local geologies. Industrial processes have altered recent and currently forming rock and ice layers; human activity has become geological, too.
exo¨geology.. entangles lunar, anthropocenic, and earthly geologies to create a de-centered understanding of place that considers the universe as a series of integrated sedimentary layers. Through the works in this exhibition, I hope to articulate the experience of looking well beneath the surface of the earth and our presence within it, in order to simultaneously reach beyond it.

Some of my site-responsive work from my 2013 residency at Nes in Skagaströnd, Iceland is featured in the first edition of the Skagaströnd Review. It’s a beautiful catalog of resident artist work and essays as well as historical photographs of the region—I’m so excited to be a part of it!

I'm so happy to be able to share this: I recently started a new visiting artist/instructor position as a Fountainhead Fellow in Craft & Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University! This is my official faculty photo... taken within 10 minutes of me finishing my drive across the country.
I arrived in Richmond at the beginning of August and starting teaching in the Fiber area a few weeks ago. The arts program (and people!) here is stellar and I'm so grateful I have the opportunity to take part in it.

I finally made it out to the Alvord Desert this summer to make this piece, marking time in light, that's part of a current series by the same name. Natural light has long been a major component of my work, but I've only recently begun to focus on its inextricable connection to time. Related to this, I'm reading Einstein's Dreams, a collection of short stories that describe how strange the world would look if the quantum rules of time were applied at human scale.
On another note, I just moved across the country! I live in Richmond, VA now and am a Fountainhead Fellow at VCU for this academic year. It's been a big change and I'm excited to start classes next week...finally!

I've been invited to present at Third Culture Conversations, an art-science conference being held at the University of Oregon. It's primarily an event to connect artists and scientists for future collaborations—so awesome!
I hope I can find someone as interested in telluric currents (electric energy at the earth's surface) as I am—I would love to be able to actually track/map them.
The image above is a recent piece, a line, the infinite, that came out of my in-progress reverse entropy project. The gaps between the sand grains seem so tiny and lead me to think about the spaces between smaller, subatomic, particles. Those even tinier gaps between invisible particles are more vast, somehow, in my imagining. An entire unfamiliar, unseen universe.

telluric line, 2013 foil tape 2.5 x 796.5 in. cow house studios, wexford, ireland
This installation was made during my recent visit to Cow House Studios. It is the first in a new series exploring the phenomenon of telluric currents—I am fascinated by these energy lines that form a latticework across the earth.
More to come, soon!

Lucky for me, a truly awesome co-artist here at Nes, Darr Tah Lei, let me experiment with mirrors she had in the studio. Another stroke of luck—I had a few days of completely overcast skies and minimal wind. The resulting new work, buoy for those between the spray and sky, is in part sourced from the striking contrast of neon orange (ships, roofs, buoys) and muted gray (mountains, sky, sea) I've seen throughout the Icelandic landscape.
