Drabble Challenge: Day 16 - Ballad

Jumping in a little late but I would like to try to follow along for the rest of the month.

Fire Does Not Dance With Grace

Saphielle sat by the campfire, absentmindedly poking it with a stick as she watched the flames dance throughout the night air. The cold wind brushing against her back prompted her to huddle closer to it for warmth, stifling a shiver. It was quiet nights like these, with her travelling companion already snoozing next to her, where her mind began to spiral into itself, drowning in memories. The hot breath against her face, the hands all over her that made her feel forever unclean. She didn't know she had dug her nails into her leg until the pain snapped her out of her reverie. Adjusting herself on the cold, hard ground, she blinked away any tears that threatened to fall and continued to watch the fire. Oh, how she envied the warm flame. Full of life, waltzing through the air unapologetically. Saphielle had never danced before. Overcome with the urge to feel free like the flames she watched before her, she took a deep breath. Keeping an eye on the sleeping Amrynn, she gently stood, moving away so as not to disturb him. Even though the fire and surrounding wildlife were her only audience, she felt anxiety rise up in her chest. Closing her eyes, she steeled her resolve. She was free. She freed herself, and she would cut through the unforgiving cold with her warmth. She would dance into the sky without regard for others. She needed not feel envious of the fire, she was fire herself. It started with a spin. Hesitant, testing. Her hair whirled around her in a fan, and the biting cold nipped at her cheeks. Then came her erratic steps and hand movements, as she merely did what her body naturally fell into, until she was twirling and jumping. She threw her arms out and tilted her head back to the sky. Dancing to a tune only she could hear, she moved as her body commanded. What she was doing was hardly dancing, but she did not care. Fire did not dance with grace. She felt free, with her hair flying about and her body moving however the rhythm of the air deemed it. Amrynn and the surrounding wilderness melted away, and all that remained was her, the air, and the fire, breathing into her and filling her with a radiant light that she had never felt shine within her. Every movement held an insistent chant. I am free. I am free. I am free. When she had finally exhausted herself, she simply fell to the ground. The world was blurry and spinning, and her limbs tingled with exertion, but Saphielle didn't notice or care. She turned her face to the sky and beheld the stars, as if seeing them for the first time. A soft smile fell upon her face, and she closed her eyes.
