A PSA about trucks from a truck driver

I and some colleagues were talking about how we wish everyone could see the safety videos that our company was showing us, because I don’t think most people understand how traffic works in a truck. So here’s some things we wish everyone on the road knew.

- we’re not kidding about tailgating. If you’re right behind us on a straight highway? Chances are we have NO IDEA you’re there, which means we can’t anticipate any of your movements. Plus slowing down takes multiple downshifts, so we might start decreasing speed way earlier than you expect.

- We’re not kidding about any of our blind spots. WE CAN’T SEE YOU, GUYS.

- That bit about slowing down taking a while? The same goes for when you’re in front of us. Don’t cut off a truck. Oh god, PLEASE don’t cut off a truck. If you cut me off, I’m not irritated, I’m terrified. For YOU. It can take 7 to 9 seconds for us to stop. DON’T CUT OFF TRUCKS.

- Before you get mad about how slow we’re going on the highway, keep in mind that many companies govern their vehicles so they literally CAN’T go over 60 or 65. This is a good thing, I promise. Because…

- Do you know what happens when a car meets a truck in an accident? The car gets totaled and the truck needs a new coat of paint. You will not win this fight. I know nobody likes getting stuck behind a big dumb truck, but it’s not worth your life.

We are trying our best to protect you from our 80,000 pound death machines. Please help us out.

Mutual Aid + Call For Help

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate you reading this message. I'm Black, queer, trans, and disabled. My situation is always dire as social support and familial support are not enough to keep me and my immediately family from going without. Further details below.

I manage the finances in my household for myself and 3 other adults. Two of whom are autistic with low-support needs. The other is a parent struggling to find a work from home job, given the wear and tear from being a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) for nearly 40 years. She helps take care of me given my limited physical mobility.

We attempted to get her paid through Medicaid, but I don't meet their strict guidelines for long-term support. The part-time support through social services is unavailable. (The waiting list only moves when someone leaves/ends their services. And the waiting list is long, so-)

We live in public housing with my son's SSI income. But it's limited when it comes to paying for transportation, delivery (since my neighborhood is so dangerous only DoorDash will deliver), and household items, including laundry. Laundry which hasn't been done in months.

Fortunately, me and my brother's SNAP benefits haven't been interrupted. However, due to the sudden stomach ulcer (I only realized I had when drinking cold water made my stomach cramp for 30 mins and my mom took stock of my symptoms), I have to be on a very restrictive diet without becoming incredibly sick. Which is pretty expensive. I also am getting over a really bad dental infection which sent me to the hospital past midnight on Saturday and I don't know if Medicaid will cover or how much they will cover a dentist.

This is ignoring my environmental factors. I have no control over the temperature of my home. People frequently smoke weed under my window, the apartment underneath mind and in the stairwells of the building. This place isn't gated. It not only can give me a migraine, it makes me too nauseous to function. I end up wearing a mask and spraying air freshener in my room. The constant yelling and fights are loud and can carry on for hours. The gun violence goes from early morning to late night, often during broad daylight too. There's more, but the environment is always stressful and anxiety inducing.

It's always hard for me, always has been. I always need help. The most helpful things would be:
